Walking The Red Carpet

Tonight was the world premiere of the “2007 World Series Film” (see my previous post on the event here), and several Sox-ians were on hand to walk the red carpet- including Terry Francona, Curt Schilling, Manny Delcarmen, Larry Lucchino and Dave Magadan, plus the Dropkick Murphys and special appearances by both the 2004 and 2007 World Series trophies.

Curt apparently did not get the memo regarding the dress code for the night, since it appears every other person in attendance was wearing suits and dresses – and Curt rolled in wearing jeans and a blue plaid shirt. Because when I think “red carpet”, I think “old plaid shirt”. I’m not going to give him too hard a time for the wardrobe malfunction, though – because he told reporters he looks forward to retiring in Boston and spending the next 10 years “in the bleachers hecking Tito.” He can wear whatever he wants when he talks like that.

Matt Damon, who narrated the film, was not on hand for the premiere- but he did send a special treat for those in attendance: a special one-time only ending to the film. “The Red Sox are 2007 World Champions. Suck on it New York!” I really like that guy. There’s an excellent article in the Globe here all about Matt and his Sox love- which includes this gem: “My brother told me my nephews think Mike Lowell is George Clooney.”

NOTE: NESN is also doing their own 2007 film, but this one will cover the entire ‘07 season, not just the World Series. It will be called “Champions Again: The Story of the 2007 Boston Red Sox” . and will air on NESN sometime in December.

Here’s some video from the World Premiere event – and I’ve got tons more pictures from the evening after the jump. Did you go to the premiere? Stop by and drop a comment and let us know how it went!

What position did Ghandi (First Picture) play for the Sawks?

  2. 2007 November 27 at 8:50 am

He played all the positions – Gandhi can do anything he wants. He’s Gandhi.

    The Sox have Gandhi.
The Yanks have Fievel. I wonder if he sings “Somewhere Out There” while he’s crouching behind the plate?

I was there! It was a lot of fun. My friend and I got there early enough to be pretty close to the red carpet, and Schill and Tito and Manny Del went right by us. They signed a fair few autographs, too.

It was just really nice to be in an environment with all those Sox fans, and to be able to relive the postseason again. Everyone got really into it and was cheering and clapping throughout, whenever there’d be a good play or something. The theater is very fancy and it was kind of funny to see everyone decked out in Red Sox gear, eating popcorn and Cracker Jacks and sipping beer there. I thought the film was really well-done. It devoted about ten seconds to the losses to Cleveland, but whatever. I was happy with it. Oh, and two clips of John Farrell talking! I started cheering when he came on and, um, no one else did. That was a little awkward. Oh, and they showed my favorite moment (possibly ever of life) of Dusty jumping up to hug Papi after his home run in Game 7 of the ALCS. Four times, no less! Aww.

OH and “Suck on it, New York”? Was hilarious. The whole tone of the movie was completely different so it caught me by surprise. I had no idea it was only for that screening. Haha, that was really awesome.

Anyway, I had a great time, and it was fun to be back in the baseball season for a little. And I’m glad to hear about the NESN doc.

Oh, and they said 12 Sox alum were there. I didn’t catch all the names, but they did mention Frank Malzone and Rich Gedman.

And Schill’s outfit was kind of hilarious. I have to say, when he said he was glad he was going to be spending the last year of his career here–”home–everyone ate it up. It was lovely.

Excellent report, Jess. And I applaud you applauding John Farrell – I was actually more relieved he turned down the Pittsburgh job avenue than I was to hear Curt and Mike re-signed. The importance of John Farrell cannot be overstated, in my mind.

I was there too–it was indeed a good time. Schill went out of his way to point out that he’d missed the dress code memo, but “It was Tito’s fault.”

The Damon ad-lib was a real hit–they’d told us to be alert for something from him that was just for those of us at the premiere!

I enjoyed the film… but… of course, it’s the World Series film. And what I really want to see is what NESN is working on, something that covers the whole season. At the end of the film, under the credits, they were playing the kind of things I wanted to see: Kyle Snyder in the dugout doing some kind of belly roll, Buck closing out his no-hitter, a shot of Kason Gabbard, etc. Not the purpose of the film, sure, but just watching the World Series coverage was kinda like sitting down to a wonderful dinner without being hungry.

I can’t begin to tell you how hard it would have been to watch if we hadn’t resigned Lowell yet!

Much advertising of the DVD box coming out, though it still ticks me off that ALCS Game 1 isn’t going to be in there.

Yay! And I’m assuming you took some lovely photos you will be posting of the evening?

And that end credits stuff you’re talking about is exactly the kind of stuff I like to see. Those random moments caught on camera that give you way more insight into these guys’ personalities than 10,000 newspaper articles or press conferences ever could. Like, the Royce Clayton, “I ain’t got my taco”, or Papelbon mugging for the bullpen camera, or Dougie hugging Beckett in the dugout, etc.

During the first round of the playoffs, when the ALDS games were on TBS, they had a special simulcast thing online at MLB.TV, where one feed was the normal game, one feed was the batter’s eye view, one was the pitcher’s view, and one feed was a dugout cam. Seriously, the whole game… a feed of nothing but the dugout. There was no sound, though.

Imagine: dugout/bullpen simulcast feeds with sound. If you could get that on DirecTV… awesome.

Would someone caution Manny Delcarmen about letting that beard grow much longer? He’s channeling Victor Buono as “King Tut” from Batman. (Oops…is my age showing?)

sittingstill, I agree with you about the credits. They included some really nice moments and I was happy to see some players who they didn’t show during the rest of the movie.

And I wish they’d just include all the ALCS games in the DVD set. Hell, include the ALDS games, too! Or even a few random awesome games from the season! I dunno, I can’t be alone in wanting to have even the games we lost? Because there were still some good things about those games. I mean, I really do not want to see that seven-run fifth inning of Game 4 of the ALCS, but I would love to see those first four scoreless innings Tim Wakefield pitched again.

And yeah, I like John Farrell a lot. Um, obviously. They could just have a whole movie of him talking; I’d so buy it. I’m also really glad he’s staying.. though I am very curious to see how he’d manage a team. Pittsburgh, though. Yeesh.

I really really want that dugout feed.

That IS Schill’s red-carpet attire. When he attended an ALS event that he was hosting right after the WS, he was wearing a similar outfit while Shonda was dressed up. They looked like the odd couple but hey, maybe he was channeling Josh for the evening.

    Curt on his attire:

Spent last night at the premiere of the 2007 World Series Video release. Unfortunately someone forgot to get me the clothing memo. So I showed up looking like I had just finished cutting wood, with everyone else in suit and tie. I guess the Red Carpet should have been a tip off

I only took a few photos… not really ideal photo situations if you weren’t allowed to run around ON the red carpet! And I only brought the tiny camera. Wally actually busted my chops about not having the big lens, which was rather surreal.

Schill walks away with the trophy:

    (I just liked the blue-on-blue)

Terrible dark photo, but just to reinforce how out of place Schill looked…

Dan Roche interviews Mags, MDC, Schill:

“Come on, Tito, you know me–you couldn’t have called to ask what I was wearing?”

I think Mags heard me thinking “I’m glad San Diego dropped you!”

Great photos, sittingstill – as always. Even with the tiny camera, you did us proud.

That pinstriped suit MDC is wearing is actually pretty snazzy.

And YES, jennyagain- there was a dugout cam. I saved some of the video from Game 3 of the ALDS, I think, when Curt pitched. I’ll upload it – like I said, no sound… but it’s still fascinating to watch.

Hi all…I just recently found your blog. Very nice! I’m jealous of you being at the premier, but I’m out here in California.

    Thanks for the awesome photos!
