The Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America announced more of their awards on Friday- the full slate of which will be awarded at their annual dinner on January 17th at the Westin Waterfront in Boston. Jon Lester was previously announced as the winner of the Tony C Award (a national award), Josh Beckett has been elected the Pitcher of the Year and Jonathan Papelbon is the club’s Fireman of the Year — and now several more Sox players have picked up awards from the BBWAA as well.

Kevin Youkilis will be honored with the 2007 Jackie Jensen Award- which is given to a major league player for “spirit and determination.” The honor is named for the late Red Sox outfielder who played in the 1950s.

Co-winners of the 2007 Minor League Players of the Year are Clay Buchholz and Jacoby Ellsbury. And Manager of the Year goes to Terry Francona. Lester, Beckett, Papelbon, Youkilis, Buchholz, Ellsbury and Francona will all attend the BBWAA dinner to formally accept their awards.

Extra bases said the public can by tickets to the BBWAA awards dinner for $135…I’m really tempted to go but we’ll see.

TexasGal, would you be so kind as to post the info about the Beckett T-Shirts again? I can’t find it.
My sister is a tad Beckett-obsessed, I was thinking it one might make a good holiday gift. Thanks.

The Baseball Writers Dinner, should anyone be interested in going, is a lot of fun. It is a fundraiser, hence the steepish price; on the other hand, the food is also a notch better than most dinners of this sort! ;) Somewhat dressy–business attire, not jerseys and jeans. Autographs are limited to kids: I think it’s 14 and under, could be 16. While the kids get autographs us amateur photographers are allowed to shoot away, though. We are fortunate to have both quality athletes and quality media here, so it’s generally an excellent program. The internet has changed the day-to-day coverage of the offseason, but the dinner used to be a midwinter tide-me-over that spring is indeed going to come!

Texas Gal, where did you see that all the attendees mentioned are confirmed? There’s usually at least one who can’t make it.

Last year was especially fun–they made all the pups in the Rookie Development Program attend. The ones who’d taken the field at Fenway sat at the head table, the others (including Buchholz, Moss, Spann, Kottaras, Kyle Jackson, etc.) sat right up front. They were definitively the nicest-dressed young men in their age group at the reception! It probably coincides with the program again this year, so I’ll have my eyes open before things get started…

    Sure enough: http://143239.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Shop/

And I’ll be adding new designs to the store soon as well.

The last I read was that they were all slated to attend, sittingstill – but like you said, whether they actually attend 6 weeks from now is a whole ‘nother matter.

And I’m assuming you’re going again, right? Please do- and take loads of photos. I will be interested to see Beckett all gussied up.

And for the record, Kyle Jackson is freakin’ adorable.
