i’m from minnesota, and i pay attention to the sox because of ortiz. i want him to do well no matter where he is. to me other athletes don’t really look like they’re having fun, david ortiz always does. it’s a game! it’s supposed to be fun

Chocolate Thunder Dessert. *dies*

There have been a lot of players in Sox history who were better, but I still think David Ortiz may well be the greatest thing to ever happen to this franchise. That combination of talent and charisma along with the fact that he “gets it” is rare. And after the fractious Sox clubs of the early 21st century, he was exactly what the team needed.

I hear Terry Ryan is still haunted by the fact that he let Ortiz go.

Everytime I watch one of these interviews with him, I always find myself with a big, giant, goofy grin on my face when its over. He has that effect on me every time — and I think he has that effect on most people.

I agree, Caroline- he is as delightful as what you’d think (hope?) he’d be.

And I also agree, Liza- Papi is the one player that everyone likes– Sox fan, Yankee fan, any fan.

He is so, so great. Even if you hate the Sox, you have to love this guy. He plays the game like it’s meant to be played, has fun in whatever he’s doing, and–as Torii so rightly said–hits homers in clutch situations.

Random Papi Tangent: A friend of mine was bored and going through some archived message board with entries from late 2002 after Papi had been released(it was an Indians board I believe) and some guy goes “Boston will probably sign him. They like big guys like that” I thought it was pretty funny.

Thanks for the videoage of this, I was looking all over for it!

Was there ever anyone who was more completely, wonderfully what you imagine them to be than David Ortiz? He could just sit there and smile for eight minutes and I’d still be riveted.

Also, “Chocolate Thunder Dessert” is so his name now.
