It Is Official: Jonathan Papelbon Kicks Ass, Too
Anything Josh can do, Jonathan can do… better? Yesterday, Josh notched up the 2007 Starter of the Year Award from the annual This Year In Baseball Awards- and today, it’s Jonathan’s turn. Say hello to your 2007 Closer of the Year.

Jonathan snagged an overwhelming 38.1% of the public vote, outdistancing the other nine candidates for the award- including second place vote-getter Bobby Jenks (26%). Third place honors went to J.J. Putz, and Takashi Saito came in fourth.
Anyone else bet that Josh got a text message earlier this morning saying something like, “GOT ONE, TOO, OLD MAN”?

God, we’re so lucky to have these guys.
I suppose any discussion on translations of his slang should be here instead–but I didn’t know about this yet.
I swear, in that video of him and Beckett talking–and then in the moose hunting extravaganza–I cannot understand every other word. I head south and it takes me 10 minutes to order a sandwich. I think maybe southerners only talk slow around northerners like me so we can understand each other…
(you should understand my mom’s family speaks with a downeast accent–that’s how northern I am–as New England as they come)
I don’t think that post will be the only one of mine asking for translations…
Anyway, congrats Papelbon! You’re awesome. Thanks for being yourself and rejecting any and all PR rules. We loves you and your heaters, and you seem to enjoy winning as much as we do.
It would be great if Papelbon actually did refer to Josh as “old man.” Since they are like…6 months apart right? Haha.
i was raised in n.e. my speech has slowed down i notice it most when visit my family. since i moved out west, when i traveled through the south resently my accent kind of confused people they knew i wasn’t from the south and when i said i was heading west they seemed to relax a bit when i told them. but i was driving a car w/ connecticut plates so they knew. i’ll tell ya hearing that full force southern twang was really cool. and all the rivalries and pecking orders between the states down there is fasinating. i betcha between beckett and papelbon it must be hilarious to see them jaw at one another. congrats cincho ocho.
Hail to your wonderful, fire-hurling, underwear-jigging, Scrabble-playing self, O Pap ‘el Bon.
AKA: Go team Papyboo!
Mouse – what video of Pap and Beckett talking?
Not sure about Mouse, but since I referred to it— if someone has a link to it, its the one where they’re arguing about spelling– Pap’s been miced up for BP and he’s ragging on Beckett for using a word with the press that Beckett didn’t know how to spell, which is, according to Papelbon, against one of Beckett’s own “rules”.
It is pretty magnificent.
I don’t know where I got “mouse” from…I think I was typing and helping my daughter with her homework at the same time. I would LOVE to see that video. Does anyone have the link?
HA! Found the page where I saw it…

Third video down.
Oh my goodness…hilarious!! Who does he ask what “boca” means? They are hysterical. Imagine what it would be like to get piss drunk with them???
Masai is Dice-K’s translator.
That video was the best thing to happen to me today. Yeah, it’s emphatically hilarious!!!
