So Close…
Is our long national nightmare finally over? Bob Nightengale of USA Today thinks so- he’s reporting that Johan Santana is on his way to the Mets, in exchange for outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey. His sources are “two high-ranking Twins officials with knowledge of the talks and a person close to Santana”.
Santana needs to pass a physical, and then come to terms on a contract extension with the Mets, and the deal will (reportedly) be done. The Mets have 48-72 hours to get this all wrapped up, and then we can FINALLY quit talking about this after 3 solid months of “will they or won’t they?” Thank goodness – as you can tell, I quit posting about the daily nonsense rumor mill around Santana back in December because it was reaching unequaled levels of ridiculousness.
Obviously, as a Phillies follower, I’m shitting my pants right now. As a Sox fan, I just say, “Whew.”

I’m praying for this. Jacoby, Lester, Masterson, and Lowrie all happen to be special favorites of mine. And this way, Santana is out of the AL, too. :D
Perfect ending. The Yankees don’t get him; neither do we but we really don’t need him; we won’t have to bat against him unless it’s in the Series. Time to move on.
Thank god Santana told them to wrap it up. I was really getting tired of Smith sitting around pondering.
And boy did he botch this job. Trying to out-dance Theo and Cashman… not wise.
I can’t believe the deal that he ended up going for…but this is ideal for the Sox I think.
Now lets see what they do with Coco…
I just did a cartwheel.
and I haven’t done one of those in years…
yay!
I have to think the Twins wanted Santana out of the AL above everything else if that’s the package they got. You can’t convince me that the Mets prospects are better than the ones the Sox and Yankees were offering. Lame.
I’m still conflicted on the whole thing. I wanted Santana very badly, but I’m not at all disappointed to know that Jon Lester isn’t going anywhere. Strange how that works.
Word for word from an email I sent to a friend who’s a massive Twins fan: “I just don’t understand it. Smith got played. I would have almost thought Hughes ALONE or Ellsbury ALONE is better than those four.”
Which is horribly Sox-centric of me to say. The Mets prospects aren’t shit – but they’re (comparatively) weak. I don’t see how that package is anywhere close to beating the Yanks and Sox offers… but I’m glad he’s in Flushing and not the Bronx.
A moment of silence…ok now that that’s over – how long ’til pitchers and catchers?
NOT SOON ENOUGH.
::::does the happy dance::::
Congratulations- Omar just totally fleeced the Twins. Y’all have got to be over the moon!
Casey – 16 days. I have a countdown going on my desk.
Perfect ending. Now, what of Coco?
If only he’d be happy being a bench player – he’s defense magic.
This news completely made my day! I would’ve LOVED Santana, but not for the price.
I love it that he’s out of the AL and NOT with the Yankees.
The ripple effect is amazing! Now us American Leaguers don’t have to worry too much until the playoffs. Nice early Valentine present….Jacoby stays with the Red Sox…..WHEW!
I can’t wait to see the standing ovation Jacoby gets with his first at bat this season.
