Gameday Open Thread: Boston College/Northeastern

Red Sox vs. Boston College (s/s)

City of Palms Park – Ft. Myers
SP: Josh Beckett
Red Sox vs. Northeastern (s/s)
6:05 pm
City of Palms Park – Ft. Myers
SP: Justin Masterson

The Red Sox 2008 season opens today – if by “opens”, you mean “playing on a baseball diamond against two collegiate teams in games that neither count towards the regular season record, nor even count towards the spring training Grapefruit League record (or even spring training statistics)”. Still – it’s BAYSBAWL, and the first baseball of the year for Sox fans at that.

Game One vs. BC won’t be on TV or radio anywhere – but I put a link to the boxscore above, so you can follow along through the box. Game Two will be on WEEI.

Use the comments to this entry as your own personal Gameday open thread. I figure it would be fun for everyone to have a place to discuss the games in progress this season.

58 degrees and sunny – and Josh has already mowed down the first 6 batters, with 4 strikeouts.

  2. 2008 February 28 at 12:57 pm

Youk gets the first hit of 2008 – and Lowell scores the first run of 2008. The Sox have opened up a can of whoopass, scoring 8 runs in the bottom of the 2nd.

All the starters have left – included Beckett, who has been replaced by Snyder. Only captain Tek remains.

nice to see beckett still in post-season ‘07 form. if we project those numbers out he’s a mortal lock for the cy. eee. ;D (i know, i know, tiny sample, but still!)

I wish NESN would televise this…how come they can air semi-boring workouts but not actual games?

Looks like it was a good outing for Pedroia today!

  5. 2008 February 28 at 1:10 pm

Dusty P drove in two ribbies on a double with 2 outs on the board – very nice.

I love that they have Kotteras DH-ing.

And jenny- I am totally fine with prematurely awarding Beckett the Cy Young right now. I see no problem with that!

  6. 2008 February 28 at 1:12 pm

I would feel bad for the Cadoret kid, BC pitcher – with this stat line:

Boston College IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
    Cadoret 0.2 5 8 6 5 0 0 81.00

JESUS! An 81.00 ERA after only 2/3 of an inning? Except it’s an exhibition game, so it doesn’t hurt him in his stats at all – and he’ll get to tell his grandkids that some of the great Sox players drilled him.

It’s SO exciting that they are actually playing baseball in 2008. My heart is relieved and revived. Go Sox!!

The only time we might ever see Kottaras PH-ing for Papi too.

  9. 2008 February 28 at 1:30 pm

    And pinch running!

It is cool to see the baby prospects names on the box. Van Every is in the outfield!

  10. 2008 February 28 at 1:47 pm

It’s official: this whole “game not being on TV or MLB.TV or radio” thing really sucks. And the box score page not being updated for almost an hour? Also sucks. /whinewhinewhine

Goodness, I wish I was there and not stuck in meetings *all* day long. Thanks for the update.

PS: At least tomorrow’s game is on NESN–can’t wait for that.

It’s 22-0 Red Sox. Extra Bases and the Courant blog have been providing updates.

    24-0. Final.

  15. 2008 February 28 at 2:28 pm

I was just coming in to post that. SHELLACKING. And you might think- “Hey, they’re a college team.” But the Mets lost to Michigan on Tuesday.

  16. 2008 February 28 at 2:43 pm

Mets actually tied the Wolverines 4-4. Most runs the Red Sox had scored against BC was 22 in 1996.

Way to go Javy, giving up the hit!:-P I wish I could have seen the grand slam.

  18. 2008 February 28 at 2:50 pm

I know! Good for Tony! Except he also got an error. Ack.

As a BU grad student I am pleased by the team’s humiliation of the reviled BC Eagles.

    Go Terriers.

  20. 2008 February 28 at 2:57 pm

I wonder if the hit Javy gave up was to a lefty.

  21. 2008 February 28 at 3:00 pm

Nope- surprisingly. It was Eric Campbell – a righty (and a Connecticut boy).

Texas Gal- you beat me! Sorry for the double post:-P

  24. 2008 February 28 at 3:05 pm

No worries. I will forgive you… THIS TIME.

Hee! Seriously – in open threads, sometimes people are going to post the same thing twice in a row. No big deal at all.

  25. 2008 February 28 at 3:26 pm

You have to love Beckett. First day of throwing in a game and he’s already talking about executing pitches.

    [Facing a college team] I

  26. 2008 February 28 at 3:29 pm

I agree with you Meg it is kind of encouraging to see the hit was to a righty. Shocking though that it wasn’t a lefty ;)

Good to see a Connecticut boy represent and get a hit. I can’t wait to listen tonight and hear how Masterson pitches.

I got home from school and the game was over. As sad as I am that I didn’t get to see Ellsbury, Beckett, Kielty, Granadillo, and especially Moss (3-for-3! I love the guy), I am glad Masterson’s starting the game at 6 (love him too). And that it’ll be on the radio.

But HOORAY–we officially have GAMES to follow! I’m so excited!

24-0??? awwww! poor BC. they should have applied the mercy rule…

to the sox it must have reminded them of every game against the Orioles (sorry, Kevin…)
I’m a little concerned that Ellsbury didn’t get any hits in a 24-0 blowout.

  29. 2008 February 28 at 5:06 pm

Moved this post up to the top of the page for the game. Yay, radio!

    RA-DI-O! :)

I have no life so I’m recording every pitch. Masterson threw 7 pitches, 6 strikes, in the first. Two ground outs and a swinging K so far.

  31. 2008 February 28 at 5:20 pm

Right here with you — baseball is back!

  32. 2008 February 28 at 5:24 pm

Im here too. Just made my MLBtv Premium purchas in time to only miss the top of the first.

Nice to know Masterson did so well (just college kids though). Dougie having a long AB right now

  33. 2008 February 28 at 5:25 pm

So nice to hear the voice of Joe C. and no more Glenn Geffner, wooooooooohooooooooooooo.

And tomorrow night we get golden nuggets from the RemDawg and his sidekick Donnie Boy.

    DP! WOOTS!

  36. 2008 February 28 at 5:31 pm

I love that you can hear those sounds so clearly on radio – on TV, those ambient sounds often get lost behind the sound of the broadcasters talking.

I had it when broadcasters chat soemtimes. I ESPECIALLY hate cuts to them on the tv. I dont CARE what my broadcasters look like. I’d rather have shots of the dugout if nothing is going on.

An old friend called me at 6:04 – I almost didn’t take the call. And she just hung up. Don’t people know the Sox are on the radio?!? I can’t concentrate on phone calls!

    2 out, runner on. And there’s the 3rd out – K swinging. 1 LOB. Still 2-0, Sox.

    Casey walks!

  49. 2008 February 28 at 5:56 pm

Casey can do no wrong with me. He could commit 3 errors and strike out 4 times in a game, and I fear I’d just look at his grin and not care.

Dougie, you gotta make a big showing here if you dont want people to start talking MORE about how they want you replaced. Dougie Ks, but Carter doubles! Lowrie time!
