Look Out, Tyson Beckford

Ladies, start your engines. Jacoby Ellsbury shot an editorial spread for Men’s Vogue back in Bend, Oregon in January for the March issue – which should be hitting newsstands tomorrow. The Globe has a tiny preview– but I spoke with Mark Fristad, the producer of the shoot, and got a few more details.

The the article is a story about Jacoby and illustrates him working out at Hillsboro’s Velocity gym. He has a personal trainer that lives here in Oregon. He is solo in some of the shots and also has some local athletes (extras) working out with him. I haven’t seen the finished article yet, but the photographs were shot by known New York photographer Richard Phibbs. His images are known for fashion advertising for clients such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.

Little Jacoby is all grown up!

The Globe article also had a few tasty details, including perhaps a few sports delusions of grandeur for a guy who’s just a hair over 6 feet tall:

Ellsbury and his girl-friend, 23-year-old Kelsey Hawkins, have allowed a few trappings of success. He drives a new blue Escalade, uses an iPhone, and has a closet packed with new sneakers. As for what he would be doing if he wasn’t gearing up for baseball: “The NFL,” he says. “Wide receiver.” Seriously? “Or the NBA.”

I don’t think Randy Moss or Kevin Garnett need worry about their jobs anytime soon.

Thanks to Mark Fristad for taking the time to speak with me!

EDIT: You can find the full text of the article online- but here’s another photo from the shoot plus a few of my favorite quotes from the article.

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment that Red Sox Nation realized their rookie Jacoby Ellsbury was the Baby Jesus in cleats.

Regardless of when it happened, Ellsbury has become the latest vessel for great expectations in Boston–a place that puts the “cult” in sports subculture–and his life will never be the same. “Going to the mall, normally I could just cruise through,” he recalls. “Now, it’s totally different. Girls will be shaking to meet me. It’s unbelievable.”

“It’s not the easiest thing in the world to come to Boston when you’re a young kid and you’ve never been through it before,” Sox manager Terry Francona tells me. “We put him in some pretty important situations, and he competed, and he didn’t back down. Usually we live and die by the home run, but he brought a speed that we hadn’t seen. He can fly.

He runs 60 yards in 6.27 seconds–just a hair slower than Carl Lewis–but even more impressive is his mental machinery, which blacks out the ballpark as soon as he bolts for second base. “I don’t hear anything. I’m just thinking, ‘Get there, get there, they don’t have a shot,’?” he says. “In the postseason, I ran faster than I’ve ever run before. I’m just”–he raises his arms and simulates a very powerful robot running–”choo-choo-choo-choo. And once I slide, that’s when I hear the crowd and know that I’ve made it, when you hear that roar.”

Even Ellsbury’s namesake connotes speed. His mother is full-blooded Navajo, and his middle name, McCabe, means “Antelope’s Feet” in Navajo dialect.

Along for the whole wild ride has been his girlfriend of one and a half years, Kelsey Hawkins, a 23-year-old Pendleton, Oregon, native who works in New York for the charter educational company Edison Schools. The two were friends at Oregon State, but it wasn’t until she was nannying on a trip to Maine, where he was playing Double A, that Ellsbury tried to get to first base. “We went to dinner, started talking, having a good time,” he recalls. “If I had started using any corny lines on her, we’d still be friends.” I ask him how she feels about the thousands of women in Boston who held up signs during the victory parade, offering their services as babymama. “After about 20 minutes into it, I don’t think she thought it was funny anymore,” he replies.

Um… gulp… yeah. I really hate that I find him this attractive. Dammit I watch for the GAME.

I actually really wanna read the article. The hotness is just a bonus!

The article is already up on the Men’s Vogue website. Only one extra picture, though.

He’s gorgeous and an amazing player but I’m not in love. I even met him and didn’t do backflips. Do I need a checkup?

Nope, fc. I heart him like the rest of the team, but I’m not all googly over him. Then again, I’ve never gotten googly over Brad Pitt, either. I see objectively that they’re both (very) good looking, don’t get me wrong… neither of them inspire any kind of teenfangirly kiss-his-Tiger-Beat-poster kind of thing for me.

Heck, I like to look at him, but I have also definitely noticed bad angles on him, plus sometimes he comes across as a little crankypants for my taste, like maybe he takes himself a wee bit too seriously. Maybe I’m wrong about that, but fc and TG, yeah, I’m over my initial infatuation. Love looking at him, don’t get me wrong, but I completely understand your position.

Also, about his girlfriend? Look, I have no problems with the girl–she seems really nice and down-to-earth, but she should probably get her sense of humor about the whole thing back pretty quickly…

(Yeah, speaking of crankypants, that’s me right now in a serious serious way, because I cannot get this stupid thing done.)

Jacoby cranky? I haven’t seen it. I think he’s a sweetie and actually adore him, just not like that.

TG, re Hollywood pretty boys: maybe you’re like me, I’ve never liked guys who are prettier than me. ;)

  11. 2008 February 18 at 7:33 pm

That’s it! He’s TOO pretty. Stop being so pretty, Jacoby.

Yeah, I’m probably not being fair re: crankiness. Either way… there’s something that isn’t there for me. I think it was the glasses that did it.

Once I realized that he took his glasses OFF for pictures and would just hold them in his hand… that doesn’t work for me.

Boys in glasses are hot. Any guy who doesn’t want to be photographed in them is crazy. Yeah, I think that was it.

    Nerds are the best.

    He’s TOO pretty.

That’s it exactly! Wow, I suddenly don’t feel so weird anymore. :)

I get conflicted about Jacoby. I like him, yet I’m a big Coco Crisp fan. And it’s hard to fully embrace a guy who’s overtaking a personal favorite.

    mouse–

totally agree with you re: Coco. I’m actually of the mind that we could probably be just fine with either in CF, but I also think Coco deserves a spot as a starter–and I don’t think he has that in Boston. I’ll be very sad to see him go, but I also understand the situation he’s in.

Here’s just hoping the Vogue shoots won’t get in the way of JE being willing to take diving catches. Ballplayer first.

Per The Globe: “Second baseman Dustin Pedroia, asked why Jacoby Ellsbury appeared in a pictorial in Men’s Vogue instead of him, said: ‘I turned them down.’”

Pedroia is hysterical! I would have loved to have seen him pose with a tire.

I’m crazy for this guy. No questions about it. But I am NOT a pink-hatter. I like the game for the game and I squeal over Jacoby because he’s a great player (and, um, incredibly good-looking to the point where it’s kind of absurd).

Alright, I’ll come right out and say it… I AM a pink-hatter!!!!! But NOT because I wanted to be!!!! I got into the game this summer, BEFORE I knew ANYTHING about Jacoby…I actually went to the game where he made his amazing linedrive catch (you know the one, Sept. 2, you’ve seen the pictures!) And THAT is where the pink hat comes in…my dad won a raffle on our tour bus, and he picked the pink one for me…I didn’t have the heart to tell him I didn’t want to be that kinda girl! It’s the thought that counts- but I prefer the classic blue & red!!…So I finally ‘found’ him shortly after my birthday, which is his birthday too!!! I instantly fell in love!!!! He’s probably the most amazing thing since Leo DiCaprio in 1997! I don’t think he’s too pretty, but I can see what you guys mean…I don’t blame you ladies who aren’t in love…I, like some of you, am not really turned on by Brad Pitt, or Tom Cruise, or Zac Efron for that matter… But I AM that head over heels for Jacoby! I got to meet him, and it was seriously the best day of my life so far! I know, it’s a little teeny-bopperish… But believe me, I try to be mature about it…But I actually DO watch the game FOR the game!!! Jacoby is the reason, however, that I can stay up late through nine long innings and watch the entire thing! But I AM in it for the game, so don’t count me out!!! …I personally have had some difficulty’s getting a hold of the Men’s Vogue issue…But I can’t wait!!! Thanks guys for posting this! And thank you for letting me be Jacobycrazy!!!!!

P.S. HumpDayHottie ShoutOut!!! Love ya ladies!
