Come On Now

This is getting absolutely ridiculous.

Sox and Yanks fans getting into tussles is nothing new – the two fanbases have perfected the art of getting drunk and calling names… and throwing punches inevitably follows close behind. There have been multiple well-publicized incidences over the last couple of years where the anger carried over outside the ballpark, and fans perpetuated severe beatdowns on rival fans. And as idiotic as all of that is, it is nothing compared to the latest: a Yankees fan ran over a Sox fan with her car and killed him.

Authorities won’t describe the argument beforehand in Slade’s Food & Spirits, but witnesses said it heated up when Hernandez identified herself as a New York Yankees fan. Like the rest of New Hampshire, Nashua, 45 miles northwest of Boston, is Red Sox country.

Bartender Tanya Moran said the argument spilled outside, and at least one person in a group that included Beaudoin began chanting “Yankees suck!” when they saw a Yankees sticker on Hernandez’s car.

Hernandez, 43, allegedly gunned her car and struck Beaudoin and his friend Maria Hughes, 21. Hughes had only minor injuries, which Beaudoin’s sister Faith said was because her brother shielded his friend.

“She never braked, and she accelerated at a high speed for about 200 feet. She went directly at this group of people,” prosecutor Susan Morrell said of Ivonne Hernandez, who is charged with reckless second-degree murder in the death early Friday of Matthew Beaudoin, 29.

Absolutely unfuckingbelievable. We’re going to run over and KILL people for being fans of another team now? And this is not a high horse deal; Sox fans can claim no moral superiority in this battle of idiocy- it could just as easily have been a Sox fan behind the wheel, and it would not have been the least bit surprising.

Rivalries are essential to the enjoyment of sport. Anyone who attended a college without a rabid athletic rival or roots for a pro team without a rival counterpart team knows that having someone to “hate” makes sports a lot more exciting and interesting. But rivalry carried to this extreme isn’t really rivalry any more — it is pure hatred. That’s not fun or exciting- it’s ludicrous.

Except hatred of A-Rod… we can all get behind that. /ends on a light note

    I saw that. Disgusting.

There’s a big part of me that believes that the Yanks-Sox rivalry is being used as an outlet for people’s frustrations in general. I’ve also seen a huge surge in road rage problems too… times are tough and people are unhappy. Still no excuse, but I don’t believe it’s all about the baseball.

And the lighter note I’ll end on is that OF COURSE it happened in New Hampshire. Buncha weirdos up there. (Anyone here from NH? Sorry about that… but I’ve heard what you say about Massholes, so let’s call it fair.)

    Wow, that is unbelievable.

That is purely idiotic to take a sports rivalry that far. I’m all for some good natured ribbing of Yankees fans, but I would never attempt to kill them. Jeez. Some people.

I’m from NH! And they’re probably transplants from Mass, rather than natives. :D

But seriously, I live in the next town over from where it happened and people around here are shocked and saddened. It’s terrible.

OMFG. I had not heard about this until just now. How incredibly tragic. And stupid. Killing people over who they root for. Unbelievable.

That’s just horrible. I feel terrible for the family…

Personally, I hate greatly dislike the majority of the Yankees (Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes get a free pass from me), but one of my closet friends is a Yankees fan. I mean, she has the same gag reaction to the name “Pedro Martinez” that I have to “Alex Rodriguez.” That doesn’t mean we aren’t great friends.

Yes, I am aware of that. But if you’re trying to insinuate Sox fans are “better” or don’t engage in violent behavior, I’m sorry- but you’re flat wrong. Considering the numerous reports of Sox fans beating the shit out of Yankees fans… neither side can claim to be free of insane idiot fans.

In my many years of Yankees fandom I have seen Yanks fans beating the shit out of Red Sox fans and Red Sox fans returning the favor–and I thought that was extreme until I heard about this. I count many Red Sox fans among my closest friends and yes, I have met asshats on both sides, usually after alcohol has been added.

The best commentary on this that I’ve seen comes from Mike Lowell via the Hartford Courant.

Beating someone up vs running over them with a car? You are even trying to compare that?

This is the THIRD death of a red sox fan by a Yankee fan that can’t handle winning. Not 1st. Not even second but Third.
