Manny Being Traded

by Texy
2008 July 31 at 4:24 pm

Despite premature reports that the trading deadline had come and gone without any movement from the Sox, Manny Ramirez has been traded to the Dodgers, in a three-way deal (sounds a lot dirtier than it is) with the Pirates that brings Jason Bay to the Fens, and sends Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss to the Pirates.

The Manny Being Manny era in Boston is over.

Reposting here because I want to say it again:

    Dear Manny–

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Watching you play has been a gift. I remember the days when I wondered whether the Sox would ever win again. You brought so much joy to the park… thank you for reminding us occasionally that it is just a game. And thank you for that beautiful night in 2004. Thank you.

Thank you, and all the best wishes in the world to you and your family.

    See you in the Hall.

    yours, with affection and frustration,

ESPNEWS just said they were unsure if the Manny-Dogders deal was actually happening…

    Brandon Moss? Craig Hansen?

    This does not bid well…

  4. 2008 July 31 at 4:52 pm

Even though I’ve never quite warmed up to Manny as a person, I admit I appreciate everything he’s done on the field for the past 7 or so years.

    Thank you, Manny.

So, have fun with Nomar and the Dodgers in a fit of irony, and we will miss you.

(side-note: I. LOVE. BRANDON. MOSS. *sniffle*)

Julie– check the last thread, deal is done.

Boston gets Bay, gives Hansen, Moss, Ramirez and Ramirez’s salary. Then Dodgers and Pirates do some mucking around between themselves too.

Craig Hansen? thank you. I’ve had just about enough of him.

so that’s it? we get…ONE guy? what about middle relief?

Say it isn’t so. Here I was feeling so relieved that 4 o’clock had come and gone.

Many thanks, Manny! Boston loves you and we will miss the power — and color!! — you brought to the lineup. Best wishes for continued success in LA and we’ll be pulling for you on the HOF ballot.

Not Brandon Moss. I love the kid.

The more I think about this…. the sadder I’m getting about Moss.

I just saw him in Pawtucket on Tuesday, and now he’s gone?

    This is killing me.

Okay, folks, stop freaking out about the NUMBER of players. Theo is not a goddamn moron. Do you really think he’d be duped? Come ON.

There are A LOT of other considerations– contract length, payroll, projectability…

The Sox had nowhere to put Moss. Hansen is expendable because that Smith kid was just as good and Aardsma is coming back. Manny will be only 2 months with his new team.

Stop freaking out. This is baseball.

Thanks, Manny Ramirez for everything here in Boston.

You were my first ever favorite Red Sox player despite everything that went on, and I still remember staying up late at night next to the radio trying to figure out if you’d been traded or not. Well, it’s finally happened this year.
You brought entertainment and power to this team, and we’ll probably never have anyone exactly like you ever again.

    Good look with the Dodgers.

By the way, 50% off Manny Ramirez stuff at Modells.

Lulu and Suzanne…I think part of what is killing me is the loss of color and entertainment in addition to the power. He’s so off kilter…just like me…and when I see a kindred spirit I want to keep them around, I guess. :::sighs:::

I wish Manny much luck and love.

What? Is there actually honking and noise and public display of whatever going on in Boston right now?

Exactly ecl. It’s all nice to have a straight-laced, professional baseball team, but some of the stuff Manny did could actually be funny. He was the very definition of something the Yankees and their strict dress code would never have.

But now you can enjoy the antics of Manny safely without worrying he’ll drop a catch.

I’ll miss his bat and OBP. He’s a character. But it was obvious he wanted no part of Boston any longer, so I suppose it’s best he moves on.

To be managed by Joe Torre. WHEEEEEEEEEEEE!

See, Lulu, I used to be a NYY fan. One of the things that soured me on them was that they’re way too straight laced with their corporate appearances and whatnot. One of the things I absolutely LOVE about the Sox is that characters are a lot freer to be themselves…hair, earrings, necklaces, the whole nine yards. I love that. Of course we still have our share, but there’s no one quite like Manny. And yeah, I know he didn’t want to be here anymore but still…now I’ll never get to take a trip to Boston and watch him belt one out of Fenway. :(

elc, that’s exactly it — it’s like the lights just got dimmer.

On the other hand, ya can’t argue with TG — he wanted to go, his comments over the last few days were growing increasingly more horrifying, and if we love him, we gotta set him free. Or something like that. Not sure about Torre + Manny…..

At least my other two DLP guys are still here, even if one is sorta tenuous down the road. :::clings:::

As a Dbacks fan…aaaaahhhhh!!!! we’ll see how he does in this big 4-game series this weekend. Hopefully it takes him awhile to get adjusted!

  26. 2008 July 31 at 5:43 pm

I stopped caring about Manny forever ago, so I’m not really sad to see him go.

However, BMoss was my favorite of all the PawSox. I get that he had no place on the Sox, but I still loved him. I’m going to miss him bunches.

I remember when I went to my first Red Sox game, all I wanted was to see Manny hit a home run. I still haven’t gotten that wish yet, and I guess I probably never will. Unless we somehow play the Dodgers.

It’ll be so strange seeing Manny in another uniform. It just doesn’t seem right.

As for Moss and Hansen, it’s much better for them, also, to be somewhere else. They’ll have much more playing time.

Manny you will totally be missed…(I had a bad feeling he was gunna be gone today after watching the game last night)
Never actually saw him in a Red Sox game, but I saw him at the rolling rally last Oct. ….

I’m wicked sad that Mossy’s gone…and I feel somewhat bad about all the nasty stuff I’ve been saying ’bout Hanson lately…but that’s just the way baseball is…

    Thanks again to Manny…

ecl- :O I know Manny had shorter hair before, but I just cannot imagine him without those dreads.

NHgal- I know, seems like it right? Doesn’t help that Manny clobbered Yankee pitching. But, I think this team has it in itself to get itself together and win the division.

I’m really bummed that Moss is gone, but I’m hoping Bay will be a good addition to the team. Tomorrow’s game will be interesting.

Thank you Manny for making the games so enjoyable to watch. I’m going to miss your easygoing, joking nature and your “Manny Being Manny” bits. We’ll miss ya.

Ok, now that I’m over the initial shock I can post something a bit more…coherent. I can really appreciate all that Manny has done for Boston but after the whole Jack McCormick incident, I really started to look at him in a different light.

I feel the same way for Moss as I did about Hinske, I’m really sad to see them go, but happy that they’ll get actual playing time. Now I’ll have to watch Pirates games.

IM EXPECTING A LOT OUTTA YOU. youll never fill mannys shoes entirely, but you better come pretty damn close to it. sorry i am being irrational right now but cant help myself.

Aw, Manny. I will miss you. I will miss the 1-2 Papi-Manny punch. Last postseason, the way the two of you were all over the bases almost constantly. The years of runs, wins, entertainment, fun, and CHAMPIONSHIPS that you helped bring us. The way you live in the moment and seem to just love to play.

Make no mistake, I’m pissed at you. You brought this on yourself. Would it have been so bad to shut up, do your job, and play out the season in Boston? You’re making shitloads of money, the fans love(d?) you, you had awesome teammates who (are at least capable of) kick(ing) ass – seriously, what’s not to like?

    But now that it’s over, I’m just a little…heartbroken.

I’ll miss Mossy too, but that kid wasn’t going to get the big-league playing time he wants with the Sox, so best of luck, Brando, you have a bright future ahead of you. And thanks for starting our season off with a bang.
