    I want it known that:

    1. I am an Olympics junkie.
    2. The Opening Ceremonies are tonight.
    3. I will be watching the game and Olympics at the same time.
    4. I already got teary-eyed at the very first montage NBC showed tonight.

Admittedly, NBC skipping over the intense suppression and repression of the Chinese government leading up to these Games of the athletes and reporters is not endearing them to me.

    Hey, NBC- what about this:

I’m not an Olympics junkie, Texy, but am VERY much with you on post #2. There’s a lot that the mainstream media conveniently neglects to mention in their coverage of stories. That’s why I’m an alternative press junkie! Major kudos to ESPN for saying something about the issue.

It’s not like there’s any country with completely clean hands. (Although China has a particularly bloody set of hands right now). But to repress dissent and freedom of speech and forbid athletes from entering the country because they object to human rights abuses in the Sudan? To crack down on the media so tight because you’re afraid all your abuses are going to, you know, be talked about? Their desperate attempt to completely de-politicize the Games has had the exact opposite effect- it has completely politicized them.

    /promise I won’t talk about Darfur anymore

Not paying attention to whatever constitutes “mainstream media” these days, I can’t comment on that, but as for the Olympics…sorry, I’m a single-minded fan: all Red Sox, all the time.

Awww- I miss the Cell. I was there for the series last year.

    Mighty quiet here.

Again, Texy, I totally concur. And I’ll step off that soapbox as well, because that is an area of passion for me and, well, I could write a book!

As for the Sox, it didn’t take tonight’s mlb.tv announcers very long to mention Dustin’s height. Poor guy can’t escape it.

  9. 2008 August 8 at 8:18 pm

    ecl, how’s the mood tonight?

I’m so fried from work, fc, that I’m having trouble formulating thoughts, therefore am rather quiet. Very intense day…the whole week, actually. I’m grateful that I get two days to recuperate. Hopefully I can focus during this weekend’s games once I get some mental rest.

Mood is okay, just fried, as I said. Thankfully, my closest coworker is just as overwhelmed as I am, and we had a heart to heart this morning that helped both of us get through the day.

  13. 2008 August 8 at 8:20 pm

Well, in the spirit of misery loves company: I have had the crappiest week yet at my excuse-for-a-job. And very ready for baseball.

Oh why, oh why, are other teams’ announcers so totally lame?

And is there any way with MLB.tv to get the video along with the away audio feed? Anything’s better than this. . . .

Carlos Quentin may have the ugliest batting stance known to man.

fc, is this a newish job for you?

Texy, you’re right…never saw Quentin before but that’s a pretty weird stance.

Maaaan, I feel old. I remember when Jermaine Dye was a really young player. He looks so grown now.

  19. 2008 August 8 at 8:27 pm

1 year, ecl – still newish after 11 1/2 years at my previous company, and my first in academia after being in high-tech.

    ecl1958 permalink

Ahh, academia. You have my sympathies. I’ve been around that kind of rarified just enough to know it can be no fun. That’s got to be a huge adjustment, such a major switch in fields!

    ecl1958 permalink

Late post: Swisher’s another one with an ungainly batting stance.

  22. 2008 August 8 at 8:40 pm

In some ways, academia is refreshing; in other ways, not so much.. And that’s all I’ll say here given a) that this is a game thread and b) coworkers may know where I hang and might read this.

  23. 2008 August 8 at 8:43 pm

Coco’s the first one with a hit? I’ll take it!

fc, it would be great if you would start an LJ so you and I can really talk about stuff — I think it would be great fun.

And I apologize for my omitted word in my previous post. Should have said “rarified atmosphere,” of course!

  27. 2008 August 8 at 8:54 pm

Nice Lowell-to-Youk action to keep that inning from getting out of control.

  28. 2008 August 8 at 8:56 pm

It’s eerily deserted here. Think everyone’s watching the Olympics?

  29. 2008 August 8 at 8:57 pm

A couple runs would be quite awesome.

Well, I know that Liza’s away…and I think Bethie doesn’t have access at work for the time being, if she’s working tonight. Other than that, maybe people are indeed watching the Olympics.

  31. 2008 August 8 at 8:58 pm

    Someone didn’t like that call….

I just turned the game on. How does Lester look tonight?

I just turned it on too. Is this announcer’s voice a little, um, “feminine”, or is it just me?

BTW, I love the olympics, but I hate that they are in Beijing this year.

  35. 2008 August 8 at 9:10 pm

In between innings I’m running into the other room to watch the opening ceremonies on the new tv.

My dad refuses to give it up for the game, so I’ll just have to run between the tvs.

  36. 2008 August 8 at 9:11 pm

Lester’s looking good, but maybe not his sharpest – I haven’t seen as many first-pitch strikes as I’d like.

And his left ear is looking particularly jaunty.

  38. 2008 August 8 at 9:13 pm

fc – I agree. Especially about his ear. I love his little elf ears :)

I love everything about Lester, but his ears are particularly adorable.

  40. 2008 August 8 at 9:16 pm

For some reason Lester always made me think of Link from the Legend of Zelda because of his ears.

  41. 2008 August 8 at 9:21 pm

fc, I can’t concentrate. Just can’t. I left it all on the field, so to speak. I’ll be better tomorrow, I promise!

  43. 2008 August 8 at 9:24 pm

Um…my “WTF” comment was meant for our outfield, in case anyone took it otherwise.

And I repeat: WTF? Not liking this inning.

HA — fc, and here I thought you were exhorting whoever is here to post. Yeah, they looked like the Keystone Kops out there a couple of minutes ago. And I’m not liking this inning either.

  46. 2008 August 8 at 9:27 pm

ecl, I’d never be that rude or obvious. Or at least that obviously rude. Subtly rude, yes.

So clearly my watching the game is making Lester nervous.

I will turn it off and I hope that helps him.

Nothing rude about telling us to stop sitting and making like crickets, fc! It is INCREDIBLY quiet in here tonight, I must admit!

  49. 2008 August 8 at 9:33 pm

The airforce has invaded the booth! Remy is under attack!

  50. 2008 August 8 at 9:35 pm

I would have been talking but my mother attacked my computer to check her email.

But it would be cool if we could get a few runs.
