End of the Coco Era

The Red Sox are set to officially announce in 10 minutes that Coco’s heading on down to Kansas City – so it’s time for the old “picture send off” to mark the end of the Coco era in Boston.

And, of course, the conversation with Royce Clayton about tacos:

All I can say is…I’m pretty heartbroken. Coco made his way into my heart around midseason and ended up being my favorite guy on the team. I can’t even begin to explain how much I’m going to miss him.

“I ain’t got my taco!” One of the funniest baseball videos. Always makes me laugh.

    I thought of you, ecl.

I’m going to miss Coco. Great player and teammate.

Jules, it’s barely begun to sink in yet. At the moment I’m somewhere between numb and angry. I despise how the business end of baseball removes some of the really good guys from teams.

The Royals are a lucky team. Good luck, Covelli, I’ll always be rooting for you.

I’ll miss ya, Coco! But, I know you want to play every day, so maybe this is for the best. You handled the Ellsbury situation with class and dignity, and you provided some clutch hits down the stretch. All the best!

I’ll miss Coco. He’s such a good outfielder.

I was a little surprised when I got the text this morning. But I was never a big fan of his, but still it will be odd with him gone.

Aw this means no more Jacoco power. I always liked Crisp so I’m sad to see him go.

And I will never, ever forget that 10 pitch at bat in game 5. Simply amazing.

i’ll also miss when, at quiet moments during coco at bats, you could sometimes hear people yelling names of breakfast cereals really loudly. there was one game in early 2007 when somebody kept screaming “frosted mini wheats” over and over. it was a heckling high point for me.

I’ll miss Coco. Always liked him, and the way his name lended itself to many lame jokes; Hot Coco (on a tear), Coco Pops (hits a pop-up), Coco Bean (gets plunked)… [sigh]

That video with Royce Clayton is a classic. I just LOL’ed all over again.

Coco was never a favorite of mine, but I grew to like him over this season. Still, I won’t miss him that much.

I like this trade a lot. More time in CF for Jacoby to develop and more help in the bullpen. Sounds good to me!

    I miss Coco already!

That said, I think this trade makes sense on all sides, though I’m especially sad to see him go to a non-contending team. Ecl: I’m not sure what there is to be angry about. Coco made it clear last spring that he did not want to be a platoon man. He wants to be a starter, and he has every right to be. Being the awesome teammate that he is, you never heard him complain about the situation last year, but I’m sure he would rather be traded than have to share duties with Jacoby again…so what’s the problem?

Rachel, wouldn’t you be just a teeny bit peeved if your very favorite player got traded?

Why everyone’s acting so shocked?? Honestly, it should have happened long ago…but I’ll miss him. It’s a good deal for everyone involved.

I’m gonna miss seeing Hot Coco!!! I loved his flutterfinger bat stance, his contagious smile, his bulldog at-bat face, and his flying ventures in Centerfield. Good Luck Covelli!!!! We will miss you!

“Did you see that catch Coco made?” Who could forget that epic commercial.

I was in the building when he made that catch against David Wright. Unbelievable. How he never won a gold glove in 2006 or 2007 will always amaze me.

  20. 2008 November 19 at 7:09 pm

Though I understand the reasons, I am sad to see him go. He handled the split duty last year with such grace and professionalism.

I was there for the David Wright catch too. (I swear I saw the Superman cape fluttering.)

Best of luck in KC Coco. I’m gonna do my best to score a ticket to the first KC game at Fenway so I can stand and applaud and welcome you back to Fenway.

I’m so sad – but I hope Coco is happy with the deal. I’ll miss how he rests his chin on his shoulder with his batting stance.

This makes me really sad. I’ll miss his new hairdos (remember when he had beads? that was awful!), his gracious speed in the outfield, his crazy batting stance that looked like he was trying to bite his shoulder, and his nice butt.

Now with Coco gone and Sean Casey not re-signed, who’s gonna fight against “Big Game James”? No other Sox can dodge a haymaker like Covelli …

Um, ECL…my favorite Sox player of all time is Nomar. I think I understand being a “teensy bit peeved” when a favorite player is traded.

As a Sox/Braves fan, I’ve been variously enraged or depressed when Nomar, Javy Lopez (the catcher), Trot Nixon, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Orlando Cabrera, Bronson Arroyo, Julio Franco, Doug Mirabelli, Gabe Kaplar, etc, etc, etc have been traded or given away.

We have all been there. But I don’t see how you can deride the “business end of baseball” on this one. Many others found ways to express their sadness or frustration and still make sense.

Coco didn’t want to platoon. The Red Sox could either continue to force him to do that, or they could trade him or Jacoby. Both of them are “really good guys.” It was not a fun choice. But if they had kept him, he would have been unhappy (and can you blame him?)…do you want your favorite player to be unhappy?

No more Covelli. Sad :( I was hoping the early rumors were just rumors, but I wish him the best of luck in KC. Who knows, maybe he’ll be back in a Sox uniform down the road and we can enjoy his gorgeous backside again ;)

I can only imagine how long the ovation for him will be in his first at bat back at Fenway next year. Say what you want about his skill set as a hitter, the guy played a fantastic center field and brought an infectious passion to the park every day. I’ll miss him.
