Looking Into The Future?

The Red Sox official uniforms always seem to remain (largely) unchanged over the years. As trends (teal! purple! aztec prints! funky lettering!) come and go, the Sox unis hold fast

So it would cause a minor ripple if the Red Sox road uniforms are changed in 2009, as this photo posted to Flickr (by wally1912) and discovered by Red Sox Monster seems to suggest might happen.

There’s been no news about any possible changes floating around as far as I can find, and the Flickr picture page contains no details about the source of the photo or the probability of that design being adopted, beyond a note that it is a “proposed design for the 2009 Boston Red Sox road uniforms”.

By contrast, here is the current road uni:

The new uniform adds red trim along the neckline and button placket seams, and adds a second red trim on the sleeves. Most significantly, though, this uniform reverses the nearly set-in-stone combination of red letters with blue trim, to blue letters with red trim (although, curiously, the player name is left red with blue trim). The photo also shows a possibility of taking away players’ last names from the back of the uniforms.

This photo may be a total pipedream, and nothing may ever come of it – but it’s fun to contemplate the possibility.

Okay, the obsessive UniWatcher in me is screaming at this. I hate it! Sox unis are classic, and this is just a step in a bad bad bad direction. I hate the way the trim down the button placket makes the letters of the “BOSTON” look off-center and screwy, I hate the blue lettering and I am never a fan of taking the name off the back of road unis, I find it rather arrogant. In sum, DO NOT WANT.

I agree. The trim in the middle looks bad. Its okay on the ones that say Red Sox, because it sort of divides them? but this it makes it look sloppy. And I like having the players names on the back- it makes it seem more inclusive for those who don’t know all the players’ numbers. I say no.

The double piping on the sleeves is neat, and I don’t really care if the players’ names stay or go (though I doubt the guys would be excited to see them leave), but the blue lettering with red trim is absolutely atrocious.

The double piping down the front button button placket looks gorgeous by itself, or (like anne said) with a name even centered across it (like here). But with the traditionally off-kilter BOSTON on the road greys? Looks bad.

The Sea Dogs hold an annual yard sale on the day tickets for the next year go on sale – this year it was November 1st. They were selling player-worn uniform pants – they frequently sell jerseys but i’ve not seen them sell pants (last year they told me they stayed with the player as all clubs wear the same ones) – we asked if they were changing the uniforms but mum’s the word in Portland.

I can live with the double piping on the sleeves. Fine. The piping down the front is just WRONG on the road jerseys for the reasons mentioned. Just wrong.

I absolutely hate the blue lettering with red trim.

If this is true, I wonder if the current jerseys will go on sale?

Ew. I refuse to believe that the players would wear this.

That’s just NOT nice. They better not change it – they’re slightly hideous.

I like the piping on the sleeves. Everything else should be scrapped. I’d be okay with the piping down the jersey but it just looks really awkward. God I hope this doesn’t happen.

they better not do those. the double trim on the sleeve is fine, but everything else is absolutely disgusting. they look just fine, and no one wants to see them change.

I concur–the double sleve piping is nice, but everything else is horrid.

And shel–I was at the Hadlock yard sale and asked a few staff members the exact same thing when I saw the pile of pants! Nobody would tell me anything. I wonder if there were more of us with UniWatch radars going off bugging the Sea Dogs staff?
