Dustin Gots To Get PAID

Being the American League MVP certainly pays off.

The Red Sox are set to announce at 3pm that they have signed Dustin Pedroia to a six year deal for $40.5 million dollars (with seventh year option at $11 million, or $500K buyout). He’ll notch a $1.5 million signing bonus just for putting pen to paper, and then a base salary that progressively increases from $1.5 million in 2009 up to $10 million in 2013 and 2014. Here’s the breakdown:

2009 – $1.5 million
2010 – $3.5 million
2011 – $5.5 million
2012 – $8 million
2013 – $10 million
2014 – $10 million

That’s $40 million in guaranteed base salary, with at least a 500 grand kicker of a buyout — but if the Sox exercise his option, he’d get $51 million over 7 years… or $7.3 million a year.

The Globe also notes these interesting contract incentives:

The option will increase to $13 million if Pedroia wins another MVP at any point over the next six years. Anytime he finishes in the top three of the voting, his option would increase by $1 million each time, capping at $13 million.

I fear for the other API athletes this offseason – if they thought he was wicked cocky before, he’s gonna be strutting something fierce now.

In this interview, Peter Gammons says this about Pleats, I talked to friends at Athletes Performance Institute in Tempe that say he’s more obsessed than ever. I want to see some of those marathon ping pong matches between Pedroia and Brian Roberts, whose tennis/eye/hand coordination skills and off every chart.

    Want video.

Seriously – Dustin is going to be intollerable at Christmas dinner this year…

    Congrats to our little pony.

I just hope they saved enough cash for Teixeira…

Yeah for Dusty! I am glad the Sox locked him down and we know he’ll be in our future for years to come. Now, I do think he could have gotten more if he waited for free agency and continued to rock it like he did last year…but that’s a big if.

Now if only they would lock up Youk and Pap to long term deals too. Then, it would officially be Christmas as far as I am concerned.

Yesss I am so glad we have Dusty P for a long time. And he’s definitely worth all that money. I wonder what he’ll spend it on…

Did any of you read the MLB release about this? It has the following AWESOME tidbit:
    —-
Manager Terry Francona also issued a statement regarding Pedroia: “Congrats to Pedey. I think this is a great day for him and [wife] Kelli, but I also think it is a great day for our organization. Everybody is to be congratulated. With the six-year contract, I feel like I got a bump in salary because of his cribbage skills.”

Tito will take ANY opportunity to give Pedroia a hard time about the cribbage game they play every game day. I love stupid stuff like this. I mean, that was his official statement!!! Awe.Some.
