Hot Stove Update

Marx Teixeira is the big game everyone is hunting for, but Sox officials say “nothing is imminent” on a deal for him… but rumblings are gathering that a deal is getting closer.

The Sox selected RHP prospect Miguel Gonzalez from the Angels during today’s Rule 5 draft.

Julio Lugo may be on his way to Arizona in exchange for insane OF and TV show personality Eric Byrnes.

The Sox have had discussions with John Smoltz – and he is considering Boston (and the Tigers and Mets), but likely prefers to go back to Atlanta.

In a shocking development, agent/demon Scott Boras may be a liar! Boras told the media yesterday that the Red Sox made an offer to Jason Varitek– but Sox sources insist the only “offer” that was made was an “offer” of arbitration. Let’s examine the lies, shall we?

When a major league team approaches you about a player and offers them a contract, I guess that’s serious,” he said. “I think that Tek has always been a person – he’s the captain of a team in the major leagues, which is a rare event. And certainly, Boston has let us know, ‘We want him back.’

“We’re talking about it, but we also have to go out and look into other situations that might be [available] to him.”

Oh, Boras – don’t ever change!

With Felipe Lopez signing with the Diamondbacks to play second base, those talks for Byrnes may be mute.

Eric Byrnes? Please let that be false.

Yeah the Lugo deal is dead.

Twinkie: Why the hate for Byrnes? He practically won the 2003 ALDS for us!

I think you mean “moot” — although mute talks would be hilarious to “listen” to.

Yeah, but he annoys me. And I don’t want him winning the ALDS for anyone else. I just don’t like him.

I’m not sorry to hear the Byrnes deal didn’t get done. I don’t like that guy…although honestly I was willing to be ok with the deal if only because we have to find some way to move Lugo.

The Smoltz rumors have got me all in a tizzy. He’s my favorite baseball player, and I am BEYOND thrilled at how well his rehab is going. Ideally, he’d spend his final year or two with the Braves and kick some ass. But if he does end up somewhere else, it would be cool if that were the Sox. If he goes anywhere, I’ll be sad (over 20 years as a Brave people!!!), but if he goes somewhere AND it isn’t the Sox…I will be the saddest Rachel ever.

Lopez signing with the Dbacks kills the Lugo deal (no offense but you can keep him). There is still some chance of Diamondbacks/Red Sox deal with a catcher thrown into the mix. We’ve picked one up on the rule 5 draft, so we’ve got a spare and it sounds like the Sox are in the market for one. Most Dbacks fans are attached to Chris Snyder, the guy who broke his testicle during a game and still finished the inning. He’s got a dependable bat and calls a good game. The other possibility is Miguel Montero. A lot of people consider him quite talented but he didn’t play much last season until the middle of the year. As a Dback fan, I’d be happy about giving up Montero (sorry Miggy) before Snyder, if for now other reason than I freaking love Snyder.

With second base taken care of, the Dbacks are still looking to shore up the bullpen, so that could be a factor in any deal.

We’ll see how much of this is just rumor.
