Hot Stove Update

Michael Silverman at the Herald is reporting that the Red Sox made and 8 (plus?) year offer to Mark Teixeira… but as Toeing the Rubber notes, he does not cite to his source for this stated fact. So I’m going to go ahead and refer to it as a rumor. The Herald notes Tex is seeking at least $21mm per year — aren’t we all?

Kenshin Kawakami has reportedly received more than one offer from MLB teams. In addition to the Sox, the Orioles, Angels and Braves are all interested.

In a bit of random news, Ken Rosenthal thinks that the Mets might be interested in Jason Varitek. The Mets would have to move Brian Schneider first, and the Red Sox are one team who have been linked to interest in Schneider. Per Rosenthal:

Club officials are divided on how strongly to pursue Varitek, sources say. Some view him as a potential difference-maker for their pitching staff; others are alarmed by his .220 batting average last season.

Derek Lowe is still looking for a home – the Phillies are out, and if the Yanks resign Pettitte, they’re likely out as well.

Jules, yes! He said he wanted to sign before Christmas, so now he only has a week. And if he ends up going back to the Angels after all this I’m going to be so pissed.

nod i wish he’d decide, as angie said though, he said he wanted to sign by Xmas, so that only leaves a week, we’ll know soon enough. Just enough time for people to add another year or 2 or another mil or 2 a year onto their contracts i’m sure with Bora$$ as an agent.

NHgal, me, too. ha. Hubby and I are obsessively checking the site. We were in San Francisco yesterday and went to the Apple store to check on their display laptops (and to covet a new laptop ;-).

I really don’t see this guy being worth 21m a year. 12-17k range, maybe, But I honestly hadn’t even heard of him until this year.

He was Rookie of the Year, has been an All-Star, won two Golden Gloves, won two Silver Sluggers, has been a factor in MVP voting at least three times, and was on the AL leaderboard for just about every batting stat for two years running. He’s also been one of the biggest names on the trading and free agent market over the last three years.

He’s someone that should have been on everyone’s radar.
