Hot Stove Update

Comin’ at ya all bulletpoint-like:

Hot trade bait in Las Vegas? Justin Masterson, Lars Anderson, and (most especially) Clay Buchholz. The Rangers have particular interest in Clay. Theo says, “In our minds he’s a top of the rotation starter who we control for six years. He’s a very big piece and we value him tremendously.”

Mike Lowell is on the mend — and the Giants may be a possible landing spot.

Sox could be interested in Carl Pavano. Sox also could be interested in Andy Pettite.

Other teams are doom and gloom about getting Mark Teixeira. “I think he’ll sign with the Red Sox,” the [unnamed official official of a competing team] said. “They want him. They have a good relationship with [agent Scott] Boras, and in the end, they have the dollars to make it happen.” Also: “He is a perfect fit for the Red Sox and Boston,” said another club official. “A guy who plays every day, doesn’t need to be the center of attention, is a good teammate, and can hit like he does, I can’t see the Red Sox letting him get away.”

Joe McDonald and Buster Olney both think Rocco Baldelli will end up in Boston. Ed Price says the Sox are “wary”.

The market for catchers is dwindling – and so are Jason Varitek’s opportunities… but Boras and Tek are still holding out for a multi-year deal. Good luck with that! Heidi Watney “writes” (no one really believes she writes blog entries, do they?) that everyone just needs to “be patient”.

Meanwhile, the Sox are still hot on the trail of another catcher- obviously, with Taylor Teagarden and Jarrod Saltalamacchia high on the list. But Haggerty notes that the Sox are “moving on to a shooter’s gallery of other options”, including talks regarding Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero and Angels catcher Jeff Mathis. There have also been rumblings about the Mets’ Brian Schneider.

Sox have met with both CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett. Burnett’s agent says Boston’s front office has had “significant dialogue” with him.

Red Sox have interest in free agent righty Brad Penny.

Personally, I can’t wait for the hot stove season to be over. Too much talk and nothing happening. Getting Teixeira would be awesome but I couldn’t stand losing Mikey Lowell. As for the fourth outfielder, Kapler anyone? I would love to have him back.

What do you think will happen with guys like Alex Cora and Sean Casey? Nobody ever talks about them.

Andy Pettitte? Really? I’m not sure I’d mind that too much (but that could just be so I don’t feel so wierd about having a little crush on him).

I second Angie. No, no to Teixeira if it means losing Lowell. Honestly, the worst thing that could happen in my little world is to lose Lowell and Tek in the same year. I don’t know that my poor, black heart could take it. Seriously. I mean it. (Hear me, Theo, my sweet?)

And I’d like to go on record as being all for Rocco Baldelli. There. I said it. I like him. A lot. I really like him. Done.

Petttttittttte? No way. Not a chance. Not even a half of a smidge of a millimeter’s baby toe. No. Nothing. Don’t like him. Don’t want him.

(Yeah, I live my life on the fence.)

Um, Hurricane – Youk not a great third baseman? Seriously? The guy has a few errors when he played over there this year but that’s because he went back and forth from first. If he actually played there as a set position all season long he could focus on the footwork over there instead of splitting his thinking.

    Geez.

    Bye bye Lowell.

On the flip side, if Mikey does go to the Giants, I am soooooooooooooooooooooooo there! I’ll buy tickets by third base and wear all my Sox gear and yell my lungs out for him. /selfish

I like Rocco, but his durability is a concern.

I side with Jane. I really don’t think I could take losing Mikey and Tek in the same season. I just don’t even want to think about it.

I’m trying to resign myself to Youk at 3rd and Teix at 1st. He is an amazing player and a great 1st basemen….

I would be happier if we signed Gabe Kapler (he is such a better option than Rocco!!!), and if we get Tek and Salty….

I just want Tek. I would bribe him if I had money. LOL

As much as I want Mikey to stay with the Sox, I kinda like the Mikey-to-the-Giants possibility if we sign Tex. It’s a lot better than the Jonathan Sanchez-for-Jorge Cantu rumors I’ve been hearing lately.

    Pavano? No Thanks.

I say keep Lowell over Texiera but I still remember Lowell only wanting to come back because the Yankees didn’t want him so on second thought.
    Bring on Texiera
