Official New Red Sox Logos and Unis
The Red Sox unveiled their new slate of uniforms and logos tonight at a party at GameOn at Fenway, and I was lucky enough to score a spot on the guest list and snag a press packet. In this post, I’ll share the official logos and uni mockups distributed to the press, and in my next post, I’ll share a whole slew of photos of all the Fenway happenings.
First up, the brand new – yet not-so-new – official logos. The Sox announced that the primary logo will switch from the circle logo to the doublesocked “Hanging Sox” logo, on the left below. Noted Boston fashion designer Joseph Abboud was on-hand for the festivities, and said that there are few logos in sport that clearly and concisely define a team and make it instantly recognizable without the need of any labels or words – and the “Hanging Sox” is that kind of logo. The “Circle Logo” will serve as the secondary, and was updated to change the font lettering on “Boston” to match “Red Sox”.

From the press packet:
The “Hanging Sox” logo – a prominent mainstay in the club’s collection of logos since it first appeared on a Red Sox uniform in 1931 – will become the team’s new primary logo and used more frequently in the future. The “Circle Sox” logo, in redesigned form, will now serve as a secondary logo along with the red “B”. The decision to change was made given the long time iconic stature of the “Hanging Sox”, which possesses an instant appeal and recognition of the team. All three logos were streamlined to reflect uniformity in font and messaging. The “Circle Sox” logo was further distilled and now the words “BOSTON” and “RED SOX” are in red and appear in the same font as the lettering on the team uniforms. Transition to the use of the new primary logo in signage, collateral and other materials will occur over the coming months.
Next up, the new uniforms. The Sox announced there are now four official uniform options – primary and alternate home, and primary and alternate road. All uniforms use the same font and style lettering. In addition to a new navy alternate road uniform, the primary alternate road uniform, called “retro roadies” by the Sox front office, will feature a Hanging Sox patch on the left sleeve — “the one closest to the heart” (of course).

Home Jerseys – Primary and Alternate

Away Jerseys – Primary and Alternate
From the press release:
Inspiration for the uniform changes started during a “turn back the clock” game against the San Diego Padres on June 22, 2007. The Red Sox wore gray road uniforms from the early 1980s, and team ownership and management were taken with the appeal of the traditional look. The team approached Major League Baseball with the request to design road uniforms that would reflect the heritage and history of the ballclub in a similar way. During the year-long process, the decision was made to extend the design refinement to other uniforms and the logos.
And here’s an additional close-up look at the ballcaps:

Verdict?
I love every single change made… with the exception of the alternate cap. I love the switch back to focus on the doublesocks logo as the primary, and I love the change making the secondary circle logo look uniform in font and style. I love moving back to the retro blue lettering on the away greys, and I adore that they ditched the block 80’s lettering in favor of the uniform, uniquely Red Sox font. I also, suprisingly, like the navy alternate away jerseys- they look sharp.
However, I staunchly oppose the doublesox making an appearance on a game cap. The patch on the shoulder of the away jersey is one thing – but I do not like any deviation from the classic “B” logo on the hat.
Stay tuned! As I mentioned above, I’ll have tons of photos from the reveal party coming up in my next post.

Texas Gal: Do you know if the Sox will have their names on the back of their roads uniforms? I’ve been searching but I can’t find anything about it.
Yes, they will!
Here’s what the press packet says: “Additionally, both home primary and alternate uniforms will feature only the uniform number on the back. The road primary and alternate uniforms will have both last name and unform number of the player on back.”
I dig how the new unis look, especially the gray road jersey. I like how old timey it looks.
I don’t like the alternate cap too much; the “Hanging Sox” just doesn’t really look as if it belongs on a hat. I can live with it being on the sleeve of the road jerseys, though.
I dunno…I’m not a fan of blue lettering. Since when is blue a red sox color? Sure, the hats are blue, but that’s because red hats look dumb (as evidenced by teams like the Cards).
But all in all, I’m far less horrified than I thought I’d be =)
Thanks so much, Texas Gal. Right after I left that question, I discovered that answer at Extra Bases blog.
I think Ted Williams would disagree with you that blue is not a Red Sox color.
The red lettering on the grey away jerseys is the non-traditional color: it’s only been around since the 80’s.
Quite frankly I wasn’t aware Boston had any noted fashion designers.
So well done Mr. Abboud.
Maybe I’m showing my age (or lack thereof), but I can’t help but look at the primary road jerseys and think of the Yankees. Outside of the caps, though, I don’t mind the alt jerseys. And I agree that the “hanging socks” logo is cool when it’s not on the hat.
While I like the new primary logo, I’m not a big fan of on the caps now that I saw it on Manny D.
It just doesn’t look right. Change sucks.
I’ve been a sox fan for my entire life. My grampa was friends with the Babe, pre Yankee days of course, and I just can’t agree with the missing “B” on the cap. Gramps is rollin over in his grave as we speak.
My signed Pedey jersey is now completely obsolete! Whoo hoo! ;D
Texy – great shots of the conference and an excellent summary for those of us who missed it. I agree with you – I like the changes in uniform but can’t stand the new cap. As I was saying to my husband yesterday, this will be yet another way to distinguish new (even newer than the “pink hat”) bandwagon fans from the old die-hards.
Take the hanging sox off the hat and I’ll be a happy camper. That hat just looks like it should be sold for kids only. I prefer the ‘B’
I’m not really a big fan of any of the changes. The jerseys aren’t bad I just don’t the primary road ones. There is no red! And I always thought the circle logo with “Boston Red Sox” around it was complicated but that’s why I liked it.
Do you think if we protest the new caps, they’ll change it back?
……but what color are the socks?
Curt-schilling-blood red.
I’m not a Red Sox fan and quite frankly don’t even remember how I ended up checking out the new uniforms but I did and I have to say, I really like the old throwback grey and blue. I never once thought of the Yankees until someone mentioned it in a post. I immediately had images of Ted Williams when I saw them.
I think all teams should go back to these styles, just for a year or something. Kind of a reminder where the game came from and it’s rich history. Good job Red Sox! The hanging sox should be a little smaller on both the hats and the sleeves but there’s something kinda cool about the simplicity of the sox. They’re just sox but they’re so recognizable and say and stand for so much to so many people. Now the White Sox should get on board and go to some hanging white sox on their hats.
