Gameday Open Thread: Boston College

Red Sox vs. Boston College (s/s)
1:05 pm
City of Palms Park – Ft. Myers
SP: Josh Beckett

The Red Sox 2009 season opens today – if by “opens”, you mean “playing on a baseball diamond against a collegiate team in a game that neither counts towards the regular season record, nor even count towards the spring training Grapefruit League record (or even spring training statistics)”. Still – it’s BAYSBAWL, and the first baseball of the year for Sox fans at that.

This game won’t be on TV or radio anywhere – but I put a link to the boxscore above, so you can follow along through the box. The second game tonight against the Twins will be on NESN & MLBN as well as WRKO – and we’ll be back with another gameday thread for that.

I may be the only person crazy enough to care about this game – but on the off chance there are others like me, I figure we can congregate together here.

Thanks much for the box, Texy. I’m wolfing down lunch as I write this, and will be checking here and on the live blog at Extra Bases. Between all three links, I can hopefully keep apprised of the fun. And I’ll be watching tonight’s game, you may be sure, as well as checking in here.

    PLAY BALL!

  3. 2009 February 25 at 1:08 pm

Me, too – ran down to grab a sandwich while I “watch”.

  4. 2009 February 25 at 1:08 pm

    Three up, three down.

Beckett broke one of the BC player’s bats with a fastball.

  5. 2009 February 25 at 1:11 pm

    That is definitely impressive!

Hello, all. Nice to see that baseball is back…even if it is in the form of a spring training game.

  7. 2009 February 25 at 1:14 pm

@Mac: We’ll take anything we can get.

@Texy: I hope to see video of that! I read a report that Beckett looked sharp in ST.

Speaking of Beckett, I’m still cracking up over that video of the little boy saying he loved Josh Beckett and then singing “Take me out to the Ball Game.”

It must be quite an adventure for these BC players to play against the Sox.

I’m having the hardest time concentrating on work today! Baseball is NOT helping ;-)

  9. 2009 February 25 at 1:16 pm

FYI…Boston College has not put out their top players in this game. JB McDonald is Boston College’s number 1 starting pitcher and never hits. Lots of the guys in the lineup are not the regular starters.

  10. 2009 February 25 at 1:17 pm

@ Mac: I have to get back to my duties in about 20 minutes. Don’t know how I’m going to concentrate!

  11. 2009 February 25 at 1:19 pm

@jules: I emailed his parents asking for the story behind that video.

  12. 2009 February 25 at 1:20 pm

@Brian Foley: And yet the Sox could not manage a hit in the first. Baldelli K’d out. Hey – Lugo got on base though!

  13. 2009 February 25 at 1:21 pm

We’ll take baserunners any way we can get ‘em, Texy!

  14. 2009 February 25 at 1:21 pm

Beckett fans CHB’s son on a called strike three. WHEEEEEEEEEEE

    Hey everyone!

So glad to have baseball back. Hope everyone is doing well. I can’t wait for spring break so I can go down to Fort Myers.

  16. 2009 February 25 at 1:23 pm

Beckett’s through two innings – 22 pitches total (15 for strikes). He should be done. Globe says he was “strong”.

@ecl1958: Same here. I have no idea how I can focus on studying with the two Sox games and the Giants game today.

    @Danielle: Hi!

I am having trouble getting back to work on either of my two projects or studying for my critical care exam Monday too. I think the work may have to wait a little bit. :)

  19. 2009 February 25 at 1:28 pm

    Buchholz is in.

(and I’m saying THANK YOU, Brian Foley)

  20. 2009 February 25 at 1:29 pm

The box score link appears to be running way behind the actual game, going by the Extra Bases blog. It’s 0-0 after two.

  21. 2009 February 25 at 1:29 pm

Yep, I care as well…way more than someone should. I am at work and spending all my time updating websites about the game. Ah, but baseball is officially here.

I heard Beckett looked good on the mound and I am swooning with happiness to see that.

  22. 2009 February 25 at 1:30 pm

Matt O’Brien who is on the mound for BC is a transfer from Holy Cross who had a 1-4 record with a 9.29 ERA in ten games including eight starts.

@Texy: Great idea–that was the cutest thing.

  24. 2009 February 25 at 1:32 pm

    Remember,

Boston College opened the season last weekend with a four game sweep over Stetson. The Eagles are way ahead of the Red Sox in conditioning…I kid.

  25. 2009 February 25 at 1:32 pm

@Brian Foley: This is why we like you. I’m psyched to find someone else who loves college baseball.

  26. 2009 February 25 at 1:35 pm

    Texy,

Remember I am a Boston guy who runs that site…I will be on the Clemson broadcast when they visit Boston College in late March. All you baseball fans should come over to BC to see some ACC baseball…Miami (FL), UNC, NC State, Virginia, and Clemson all come to Chestnut Hill. All the games are free to attend.

  27. 2009 February 25 at 1:37 pm

@ Brian Foley: Posting from the very heart of ACC country here! I hope you guys have a great time when the southern contingent is up there.

  28. 2009 February 25 at 1:38 pm

Last year the game looked a little different

  29. 2009 February 25 at 1:38 pm

I am so excited to actually watch the game tonight. I am in NY, so I don’t get NESN. I was thrilled to see the game was going to be on MLB tv. Whoo hoo! It may be 20 degrees outside, but it feels like baseball.

  30. 2009 February 25 at 1:40 pm

@ecl1958: I always have fun when those teams come in but we need to get more baseball fans at the game.

  31. 2009 February 25 at 1:41 pm

@Shelley1005: I know! We’ll all get to pretend it’s summer, when we’re heading home in time to catch the 7:05 first pitch.

  32. 2009 February 25 at 1:42 pm

One of the best things in the world is going to the College World Series in Omaha.

Of course, it’s even better when your team wins the NC.

  33. 2009 February 25 at 1:46 pm

@Texy: I am press passed for that!!

  34. 2009 February 25 at 1:47 pm

Good to see that they’ve already pulled lugo…that makes me happy

  35. 2009 February 25 at 1:49 pm

Hey folks, I’ve got to get back to work in earnest here. I may drop by at some point, but otherwise will have to save the fun for tonight. Enjoy the rest of the game!

  36. 2009 February 25 at 1:50 pm

@Hurricane: Hey, he actually got on base! And Beckett has a 0.00 ERA! Spring Training is MAGICAL!

  37. 2009 February 25 at 1:51 pm

BC takes the lead. Dogs and cats living together… MASS HYSTERIA!

  38. 2009 February 25 at 1:56 pm

@Texy: For the Sox, I hope Lugo does well this year…but personally I just can’t stand him. At least I get to watch Lowrie on my tv tonight.

And who couldn’t be happier with Beckett’s current ERA. I am hoping he has the comback of all comebacks this year. So far…looking good, mighty good. I’d be scared if I was a certain team who just paid a million bajillion dollars to bulk up their pitching staff.

I should probably get back to studying now. Fun. (Not really.)

See you all later at 4:05PM(7:05PM)!

  40. 2009 February 25 at 1:59 pm

Kris Johnson will never live it down if he gives up the first loss to BC!

Good to see Beckett and Buchholz looking good.

  41. 2009 February 25 at 2:01 pm

@Texy: Wait what? Really? My boxscore isn’t updating then. *pokes it*

  43. 2009 February 25 at 2:04 pm

@Twinkie: Sad, but true. BC is up 1-0 after 5 1/2.

Tazawa just got 3 out in a row – reportedly on just four (!) pitches.

  44. 2009 February 25 at 2:05 pm

Tazawa only need four pitches to get three outs… not to shabby!

  45. 2009 February 25 at 2:05 pm

My box score isn’t updating anymore either.

  46. 2009 February 25 at 2:05 pm

@Bottom Line Rob: There will need to be some sort of new nickname awarded to him.

  47. 2009 February 25 at 2:07 pm

I’m over at Extra Bases and Adam Kilgore is doing pretty well at updating the score and what is going on.

  48. 2009 February 25 at 2:08 pm

Sox just took the lead 3-1.

  49. 2009 February 25 at 2:09 pm

Sox take the lead thanks to Chavez and Lugo… 3-1 Sox.

@Brian Foley: No update for me, either.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh…the girl scout cookie fairy just arrived. That’ll help me get through my heuristic documentation ;-)
