Dunkin Dustin
Last year’s Sullivan Tire commercials marked the advertising debut of the acting genius that is Dustin “Pleats In Cleats” Pedroia, and brought us the memorable quote, “I don’t believe it, it’s Jim Rice!” Then came the MLB The Show commercials, and a very hamster-y looking Dustin shared his trophy-shining ego with the entire country. This year’s Sullivan Tire commercial was a step back- there was nary a pleated pant or a Jim Rice to be seen.
But now Dustin’s back with yet another commercial – this time for Dunkin Donuts. And as DD discovered last year with Jonathan Papelbon, NOT having the athlete speak is really the best strategy. Instead, they’ve got Dustin acting slightly surly, but with no dialogue. Oh, and of course, the commercial riffs off the fact that he’s short. Did you know Dustin is short? Breaking news alert!
In the new Dunkin’ Donuts television commercial entitled, “Dustin and Goliath,” Pedroia is faced with the challenge of a pinstriped giant on a biblical baseball field. Inspired by the story of David and Goliath, Pedroia takes a sip of his Dunkin’ Donuts Iced Coffee with a shot of espresso and takes down the giant with a ball hit off the mighty swing of his bat.
And the online campaign comes with this terrifying image — complete with a scrappily dirty uniform and eyeblack. It also looks like they’ve photoshopped in gallons of Youk-esque sweat onto Dustin’s head:

Now that makes me want to run out and buy some coffee!
Of all the Dunkin Donuts related videos, though – this one still reigns supreme.

This. Made. My. Day. Thank you so much!
I am totally getting those free turbo shots as long as they’ll pour. And then I will hit rockets, yo.
I thought that his shortness was an optical illusion because everyone else on the team is so tall, but standing next to him I was like “Whoa!” It only serves to make him more awesome, though.
Great commercial! Glad he’s not saying anything. I think the Schilling one is my favourite, and I still like the Theo/Johnny Demon one.
I love the new commercial. Dusty’s acting gets better every time
Love. It.
I saw this add for the first time today… first in print at the DD rive thru… and then in video form online.
I think Texy nailed it on the head with the whole “no talking” thing… you need only watch a Sullivan Tire commerical to realize how much better it is when the stay quiet…
But if Pedy and Paps were allowed to spout off without a script… you might have the best commercials of all time!
ps. these new DD ads are perfectly timed with the release of our “Boston Runs on Dustin” t-shirts… check ‘em out at http://www.bottomlinesox.com.
I agree with Twinkie, the Schilling and the Theo/Damon commercials were the best ones =)
