Rocco to DL; Lowrie to Surgeon
After Rocco Baldelli was yanked mid-game today due to a “mild hamstring strain”, utility man Jeff Bailey was shortly thereafter pulled off the field in Pawtucket and recalled to Boston. And although the Red Sox have not made any kind of official team announcement yet, as the ProJo notes, this series of events likely means that Rocco is headed to the DL.
Terry Francona told the media that they will wait and see how Rocco feels tomorrow morning– but considering that same fluky hamstring kept Rocco out of the Oakland series, the outlook is not good.

And more excellent news out of Arizona this morning: Jed Lowrie will need surgery on his fractured left wrist. As mentioned before, the spin from MLB.com (and repeated by some folks around the blogosphere) that Lowrie wouldn’t need surgery was premature. Jed’s meeting with Dr. Donald Sheridan in Arizona this morning was his fifth consultation since injuring the wrist and moving on to the DL on Monday (including 3 consultations in Boston and another in Baltimore).
Tito is optimistic, however, that we could see Jed back on the field by the All-Star break:
“I think there’s a pretty good chance that he’s going to have a surgery in the next day or so, but we’re still having some internal discussions,” said manager Terry Francona. “In saying that, I think it’s pretty good news. I think the medical people think even with the surgery that he would be having, he could be palying by the All-Star break. That’s where we’re at today. We’ll obviously know more today or tomorrow.”

…I blame it all on the FAILHAT.
*wraps the rest of the team in bubblewrap*…twice.
@Melissa: Throw the coaching staff in there, too, for good measure.
Hopefully Tito will be right and Jed will be able to do some baseball stuff by the All-Star Break.
@Melissa: Might wanna wrap JD a few more times.
@Melissa: LOL. Love the FAILHAT (great post on that, btw).
I feel for Jed–he’s worked so hard and has shown a lot of talent when he hasn’t been hampered by that wrist. I do hope he gives it time to heal because rushing it will do more harm than good in the long run.
I’m glad we won already today, but I’m missing Sox baseball when I get home from work.

I think things like this will be par for the course when it comes to Rocco this season…or any season when it comes to the fella. Luckily, we have someone like Bailey we can pull up and hopefully give us some quality at bats from the bench.
As for Jed, I do hope he nips whatever is going on with his wrist in the bud since when it was healthy, he was hitting like a rock star….and we kind of lucked out there too getting Nick Green. He is doing much better than I thought he would…and I soon I’ll be hoping that he gets the start instead of Lugo when the time comes(I know it’ll never happen).
Even with Dice-K…we had Masty ready to hop into the role and take over for a while.
I guess what I’ve been trying to say in the most long winded way ever…is that yeah, we’ve had our fair share of injuries, but I’ve also been WAY impressed with our depth and ability for the bench players to come up big and make an impact.
A long-term solution that doesn’t end Lowrie’s season is probably the best-case scenario he could have hoped for. A healthy Lowrie will certainly help the team, especially down the stretch.
And I also wanted to add that I certainly hope Baldelli comes back soon. We want our stolen binky mascots playing, not on the DL.
