I tried to make sense of this, but alas, it was to no avail. Yeah, this is the kind of stuff that only New England would come up with.

    Which one is Paul Revere?

Aw, quit making fun of the Orioles’ outfield.

@Ian: Dunno, but the guy on the left can lead us to victory.

@Mac: As an (almost-native) New Englander myself, my only defense is that people needed something to do to keep them busy in the spring and summer before the Red Sox rolled into town, and after spending the winters shut in like a bunch of Russian composers (way too many “diminished fifths”), getting dressed up in silly costumes and reenacting the Revolutionary War probably seemed like a good idea.

Aren’t those the same people who fire off their muskets in the Patriots end zone when we score a TD?

  8. 2009 April 21 at 11:28 am

@Melissa: Yes, in fact they are. And of that phenomenon, I say, “Only in New England.”

Now, see, having been born in Boston and having lived here my whole life, this made perfect sense to me. It’s Patriot’s Day, so they have people dress up in period costumes. That’s what always happens on national holidays, right? Heh.

They’re the End Zone Militia. Well, that’s the football end zone ones, I presume they occasionally grace Fenway with their period costumes as well.

At Fenway Park, End Zone Militia marches onto the field just beyond third base and wheels to face home plate just beyond second base. Of late, you may also see us at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton.

Colonial reenactors are a fact of life in New England – I thought everyone knew that. Heck, they were here long before the Sox ever played. 8-)
