The Jason Bay Era

Can we all make a pact?

From now on, whenever Jason Bay does something really awesome – and he will – that the first words we say will have nothing to do whatsoever with Manny. No lame “Manny who?” jokes. No tired “Who needs Manny?!” references. Let’s all resolve that whenever Jason Bay is awesome, we talk about Jason Bay.

Because that was then. And this is now.

He’s earned it.

I think I might just be a little bit platonically in love with him.

But you know what? Screw that.

    I LOVE JASON BAY!

    Yup, that’s better.

Jason Bay brings us joy. And we love him for it.
    It’s as simple as that.

Whenever Jason Bay does something amazing, we talk about hockey. You know, in his honor.

We’ve been talking about hockey practically non-stop lately.

Well, if Francona doesn’t want Jason Bat—er, Bay—to think he’s a replacement for Manny Ramirez, shouldn’t we extend him the same courtesy?

(And how did we not come up with “Bat” as an obvious nickname for a guy named “Bay,” especially on a team that has employed guys nicknamed “Eyechart” and “Typo”?)

I’ve been on the Jay-Bay train since he came to Boston. He makes it impossible not to love him!

@lone1c: I think there was talk of calling him “Beaker,” like the Muppet.
He silenced that talk with his bat, but sometimes I still think in “meeps” when he does something spectacular. Lotsa meeping lately …

Absolutely. I have been in like with him since the day he stepped onto the field. From all accounts, he has a great work ethic, is a conscientious and considerate team mate and team player, gets the job done in the field and at the plate, values what it means to have an opportunity to play for the Red Sox, and has expressed his desire to stay. What more could you reasonably want? I’m sick of reading negative critiques of his stats by the baseball stats wonks. Stats matter, but if they were everything, Dr. Steinbrenner’s “Frankees” would win every year.

Memo to Theo. Get Jason Bay signed. Now. Please. Thank you very much.

I agree. It’s a whole new era, especially *when* Theo signs him to an extended contract. He can hit and he plays the Monster extremely well. He didn’t need an adjustment when he came over from the NL.

I yell, “Go, Canadian!” when he makes his big plays (I have a lot of family in Canada). I love this guy.

    bwaaahaaaahaaahaaa

I’m sure Theo will sign him–Bay is his ideal player: great offense, excellent defense, not a drama queen, and *wants* to play in Boston.

Hear, hear. I agree. When JayBay first came to town, like the others…I made the Manny comparisons mainly because I was so pleasantly surprised what a QUALITY PLAYER we got in a trade that everyone knew we desperately NEEDED to make.

And now…he deserves our attention and respect…SOLO. The guy is a legit star and the more time he spends in the AL East, the clearer it becomes. His humbleness and ability to just play the game is welcoming. I got some serious LOVE here. JayBay just fits in with the boys.

Here that Theo…JayBay’s value is going up with each and every game. Call his agent…NOW. Get it done. He is what we need LONG TERM in front of the Monster. Matt Holliday is not coming here, nor is he better than what we have in our sunflower of PERFECTION.

There’s a graphic novel in there some where, I am sure. Of course, it is possible that I have been reading too much Ellsbury & Elf.

  18. 2009 April 28 at 9:59 am

Agreed. And to throw my $0.02 into the nickname discussion, I call him JayBay.

  19. 2009 April 28 at 10:06 am

    Done and done.

RE: nicknames… my buddies and I simply call him “Fours.”

“Mr. Clutch” also seems appropriate at the present time…

  20. 2009 April 28 at 10:58 am

Nick Cafardo obviously did not get your memo. Sheesh. If you wanna write an article about Manny, go right ahead, but don’t hide it as an article all about JayBay.

I agree completely. I’m so sick of still hearing about that guy who used to hang out inside the monster and occasionally make a catch or two. I loved him, but Jason is quickly becoming one of our star players.

Jason Bay fan since he was with the Pirates (Sox fan, but playing fantasy baseball opens up a whole other world :P). Do you realize that this guy was the only offensive force on one of the worst teams in baseball, and yet you could still project him for .280, 20-30 HRs, 80-100 RBI, a handful of steals, good defense and far fewer headaches? Why should Manny even be mentioned in the first place when we got a guy who could pull those kinds of numbers ON THE PIRATES?!

    BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

@ecl1958: I was just reminiscing over an old post in which a certain commenter says half-heartedly “I’ll try to like this Bay, I really will. And I’m sure I’ll get used to him after awhile.”
