Spiral Of Doom
There’s a saying my friends and I use to describe that all-consuming negative feeling that sometimes takes hold when you’re hit with a tidal wave of suck: the Spiral of Doom. This is not simply the doldrums or feeling blue – this is a mounting sense of total and complete suckitude. We’ve even turned it into a verb- “Man, I’m really Spiral of Dooming today.”
After getting swept by the Rangers (the Rangers!) during a five-game losing streak, while the Yankees surge ahead to a solid 1st place in the AL East, it may seem like the perfect time for everyone to engage in a good old-fashioned Spiral of Doom. Especially when you see this Gross Production Average chart, put together by Red Sox Stats Blog – showing the run production of the 3 top AL East teams over the year:

But you know what? I’m not Spiral of Dooming. And although most Sox fans I know are disappointed and concerned, there doesn’t seem to be any kind of mass swell of people committing hara-kari… yet. It’s like everyone looks at the talent on the team, looks at what they’ve been capable of doing, and just keeps waiting for the Sox to return to form. In the meantime, we’re all grumbling, but there’s no rioting. These are the times that try men’s souls, and all that.
I suppose if we get desperate, we could always sign this guy:

Damn, that kid’s got an arm.
@Liza: I thought the same thing–what a throw! Can he hit a damn ball as far as he can throw it? Right now…that would be an improvement.
Spiral of Doom: that’s been work the past couple of weeks–working 12-15 hours a day, seven days a week. All because of an incompetent idiot who can’t communicate a damn thing.
I’m not spiral of dooming for the Sox. The road trip sucked, no doubt. Rookie pitchers making the guys look foolish, hits gone MIA (did lugo pack up the awesome to take to St. Louis?) I’m not sure about the trades, haven’t had a lot of time to read anything. LaRoche? I’m hoping for Gonzales from SD (I know, expensive in chips).
might be a top-5 .gif on the tubes
I saw that with my friend, JD can’t even throw that well. That kid is beastly.
that chart is pretty depressing.
that guy’s arm was impressive, and you’re right BostonGirl, he does throw better than Drew. Is that sad for our team??
That must have been part of last night’s game that I couldn’t bear to watch. I assume there was talk about that throw???
All I have to say is
WHAT.
WHAT IS THIS?
STOP SUCKING
PLEASE
FOR MY MENTAL HEALTH AND SUCH
FOR MY CAPS LOCK
AND OTHER IMPORTANT INSTANCES IN WHICH I NEED TO SPITE CERTAIN PEOPLE
I seem to have the same conversation with the recent Yankee-loving ex (oh yeah… there’s more than one).
Him: Say thanks to your beloved Red Sox for pushing us to the top of the table
Me: HA. FUCK YOU!
Him: Love you!
ME: grumble.
(Yeah I don’t know why it always ends that way either).
And Jules, I think Lugo did steal the awesome in a moment of spite and horrible coincidences. If we knew he was going to do that, we should have traded him for Pujols.
Have you forgotten 2004! We are not spiraling to doom! We are only two games back! Its not the end! Far from the end of the season! I love this site and i have following it silently for two years, but I disagree with this post!
the sox could use an outfield with an arm like that!!!
@A Fan: Did you actually read the post, though? Allow me to quote: “I’m not Spiral of Dooming.” Not sure how much clearer that could be.
So if you disagree with the post, I guess you think Sox fans should all be depressed.
I think it’d be a strategic – and characteristically unexpected – move by Theo to recruit this kid; that was a pretty sweet throw.
It’s only been a week since the All-Star Break ended so I’m hoping the Stars (figuratively & metaphysically speaking) will realign & put the Red Sox back on top and have the Yankees eating a significant lead. It’s still early in the second half, kids; as disappointing as the Toronto & Texas series were, we’re not down & out … yet. Cross your fingers for home field advantage and that our boys/bats come back from whatever mental vacation they’ve been on.
