End of the Brad Penny Era

During the game against the White Sox tonight, I looked out to the outfield and saw two legs in high socks sitting on the bullpen bench. For a second, I thought I was imagining things – and wondered aloud who could possibly be wearing high socks out there, now that Justin Masterson is long gone to Cleveland. And then I realized: it’s Brad Penny.

Turns out I was looking at Brad’s first and last time sitting out in the Boston bullpen: he has asked for, and was granted, his release from the Red Sox.

“I asked for my release and I got it,” Penny said.

Speaking after last night’s 3-2 victory over the White Sox, Penny thanked the Red Sox for taking a chance on him.

“I enjoyed playing with all of the guys,” he said. “I played for a great manager on a great team. I had a great time. I enjoyed it. I wish things had worked out better, but that happens.”

It wasn’t so long ago we were all saying hello to Brad, and now he’s the hitting the road. I can’t say I’m too broken up about this development, given that he seemed to only be effective when he was barfing his guts out in the toilet between innings… and unless regular incidents of food poisoning were in Theo’s gameplan, I don’t think there was much hope for him here.

I do have two regrets, though.

Regret 1: we won’t see his BFF Chuck Liddell trolling the bars around Fenway any more.

Regret 2: We’re going to have to find a new scapegoat.

I can’t believe he actually acknowledged that he wasn’t our pitching ace. Well, at least we still have Byrd!

    Finally!!
However, I do have a hunch that I am gonna feel the same way about Billy Wagner that I did about GODDAMNPENNY and John “F You” Smolz. Let’s hope he does a great job with us against AL batters!!

I laughed so hard when the Red Sox signed that tub of lard! His trash act is just that, “A Trash Act”. He is much more interested in blaming everyone but himself for his poor work habits, crappy pitching and fat ass! He was Cancer on the Dodgers and the same on any team he hooks up with. Good riddance!

@Lance Royce: Ok, so he wasn’t the greatest pitcher we’ve ever had, but even still, this is just way harsh. He’s still a professional baseball player which is more than I can say for you, right? He may not fit the uniform the way Ellsbury or Lowell does, but it still takes a lot of conditioning, strength and heart to play professional sports. Yeah, so he didn’t work out for us and now he’s gone. Smoltz didn’t work out for us (and we could argue pitched WORSE than Penny) but you’re not shipping him off to an old folks home, are you?

Good riddance! “”I had some bad breaks…” Please. Give me a break. This guy was either #1 or 2 when it came to run support and that’s the only reason he had any wins this year.

If I were him I would have stuck it out in the bullpen for the rest of the season with hopes of winning a world series ring. You have 2 months left, suck it up, and walk away when the season is over.

@luvmybsoxboys: If the sox win a world series, he will get a ring.

Yea I know that but just getting a ring isn’t the same as being able to be there for the world series and the parade and things.

We know I like Brad Penny. We know I liked him pitching for the Sox. We know it is not always a rational thought.

I’ll admit, I am sad to see the guy go…especially since in a few short days, our rosters will expand and we’d have the room to have his arm hanging around these parts. I think Brad is a really talented guy…and works a lot harder than his reputation would indicate.

So long Brad. I wish you well. I hope that another team picks you up…but just know, if you go to some team and pitch lights out for them, I’ll have to hate you. I don’t wanna hate you…but I’ll do what needs to be done.

I will say…I’m gonna miss seeing Will Ferrell in Elf up there on the mound. Rock on B Penny. Know that somebody out in Red Sox Nation will miss you.

better yet, what NL team does he jump on with and dominate in September?? Colorado maybe?

    Bye, Penny!
I still had high hopes for you… Oh, well…
I think he was a big person by admitting that he just wasn’t working in the team and I liked that he expressed how thankful he was.

It stinks because I loved having a fellow Okie on the team, but hopefully he will have better luck somewhere else… just like Smoltz lol
