Hot Stove Update
The general managers' annual meetings started today in Orlando, and reportedly the biggest buzz so far has centered around A-Rod (no surprise) and Coco Crisp (slightly surprising). The market for outfielders is apparently going to be a hot one this offseason, and Nick Cafardo reports that Coco's name seems to be the one everyone is talking about. There are a number of clubs rumored to be interested in Coco- including the Astros, Rangers, Braves, Padres, White Sox, Phillies and the Twins- who may be looking at him as a cheaper alternative to Torii Hunter.

Curt Schilling was in Philadelphia yesterday to watch the Eagles-Cowboys game, as a guest of the Eagles' owner Jeff Lurie. Lurie is also a lifelong Red Sox fan. No word on whether Curt was in town purely for the football-- or if he also had contact with the Phillies while he was there.

you BOTH look much better in the Boston unis, guys

The Boston Herald points out that the Red Sox are expected to inquire about Twins pitcher Johan Santana and Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera. Rumors on Miggy Cabrera are that the Marlins would be asking for hefty compensation- like at least two out of the group of Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury.

And while there are rumors about the Sox looking at the Marlins' third basemen, fans in Florida want to know if the Marlins are looking at the possibility of acquiring the Sox third baseman. Mike Lowell is likely way, way out of the Marlins' price range - but Mike is reportedly down in Orlando now... possibly to take a meeting with Tito Francona and Theo Epstein?

don't leave us, Mikey

Everyone's favorite reliever Eric Gagne may find a home back from whence he came- with the Rangers. There's also a rumored possibility he ends up in Detroit.

Ugh. I don't WANT Miggy! We don't need an overweight, under-working third baseman! We have Mikey!!!

I think my overuse of exclamation points shows how serious I am about this.

And...trading Jacoby? No. Effing. Way.

We do NOT need Miguel Fricking Cabrera. We need Mikey Lowell!

And seriously. If they trade one or more of the Jacoby/Clay/Lester bunch, I might have to die. Or... I don't know. But we canNOT lose them.

Uh, we definitely do not need effing Cabrera. We need Mikey.

..and just the THOUGHT of losing Ellsbury made me throw up a little on the inside.
ughhh, I hate this feeling.

If Santana guarantees he will sign an extension, than that could potentially be awesome. Schill would almost certainly be gone then, but if we could somehow convince MN to take Crisp and 3-4 farm guys (and I mean, MLB-ready for late '08/early '09 highly rated farm guys) the rotation for next year (or the next three) would be insane...Beckett, Santana, Dice-K, Buch and Lester, w/ Wake as a 6th starter help prevent fatigue in the young guys and possibly Dice-K and fill in during injuries. I doubt MN would go for that, and I'm not a huge fan of completely raiding the farm but it's just a thought. And I don't want Miggy. Noooooo thank you.

It's very unlikely that any big deal will occur without breaking up "the trio." It sucks but a lot of negotiaions will probably START at Buchholz AND Ellsbury, we just have to hope that Theo's negotiating skills can get them to just take one.

And what kind of sucks is that Gabbard could have possibly been used in some of these trades too...however all we got in exchange for him was got five extra loses and a sandwich pick:-/

I agree with all of you- I am not at all excited at the thought of Miggy Cabrera. Not that he's not a fine player, but we don't need him when we've got Mike in the fold. I am especially wary of losing Jacoby and Clay to get him.

We're losing Coco to free agency, so we need to keep Jacoby out in CF for defense- and his bat at the plate when paired 1-2 with Pedroia is explosive. And I freely admit Clay has sentimental value to me, but losing him would be a massive mistake.

I fear the front office's not-so-secret plan is to give up when the Lowell price gets too high, move Youk to 3rd, put Moss at 1st.

I say no to Santana if it means giving up Clay or Jacoby or even Jon Lester.

I agree. What he said.
