Hot Stove Update
Lots of breaking news and rumors on Mike Lowell. WHDH is reporting that four teams have contacted Lowell with a four-year offer: the Braves, Angels, Cardinals, and Yankees. "A source close to the Lowell side of the negotiations [says] that each offer is a 4-year contract, worth between $55-60 million." By contrast, the Sox offer left on the table by Lowell was a 3-year deal reportedly to be between $36-45 million.

I love these rumors from "sources close to the negotiations". We'll see if this one pans out.

The other component of the breaking Lowell rumors, and one that's been mentioned by WHDH and NJ.com, is that the Yankees' offer is for Mike to play first base-- presumably because they are going to re-sign A-Rod to play third. Dan Graziano reports:

"A person familiar with the negotiations, who requested anonymity because discussions are still ongoing, said the Yankees have been in contact with Lowell's representatives about the idea of him signing to be their first baseman. The idea would be to bring Lowell, who came up through their farm system in the mid-90s, back into the organization while simultaneously weakening the Red Sox by taking him out of their lineup and infield."
According to WHDH, "Lowell is now waiting to see if the Red Sox will up their initial offer and try to keep him in Boston, in lieu of these newest offers from the four previously mentioned teams."

Normally, I intentionally avoid mentioning A-Rod or discussing the maelstrom surrounding his contract negotiations (because I'm of the opinion that feeding that media circus only helps him- and, plus, I'm frankly quite sick of the overload of attention focused on him by everyone)... BUT, I'm making an exception to note how hilarious the whole "The Yankees would only negotiate with A-Rod if Scott Boras was not involved" versus the new spin Boras is frantically trying to get out there that "Boras is deep in negotiations with the Yankees who are going to give him a deal worth $300 million" (subtext: "LOOK HOW BRILLIANT I AM EVERYONE! I WAS NOT DUMPED BY A-ROD!").

Man...if the Sox offer was 3/45 and he signs somewhere for 4/55 I will be wicked pissed. They've been wasting 12 mil for the last two seasons between Clement and Renteria, so even if Lowell were to really, really suck in '10 and they need to sit him in '11, they would still be wasting less.

And asking him to play 1st? I hope that pisses him off enough so that, at the very least, he doesn't go to NYY. I really, really want to be optimistic about this...

I fully screamed as I read this. I saw the first-base rumor on Extra Bases and disregarded it--he could have, with actual possibility, won a Gold Glove for his work at third this season, and I don't think he'd want to move to first (in much the same way there's no way Youk might move to third, in my opinion...).

But aah... 4/55? No way. Mikey, you're smarter than that!

I'll be interested to see if other media pick up on and support that four teams rumor- obviously, I buy the Yankees part. And the Angels part seems plausible. But the Cardinals? If that's true, then they'll be unloading Scott Rolen post haste.

A lot of those are pretty interesting. I mean the Cardinals have Rolen, the Braves have Chipper, and the Angels...well okay that one can look legit. The Yanks have the A-Rod ish with their hilarious concept of putting Lowell at first. I think that Rolen and Chipper are possibly going to be moved. We'll see.

I wonder what will happen. I had thought about Philly being a huge factor, but my Philly fan friend told me that they're likely gonna go into the season w/ a platoon of Wes Helms/Greg Dobbs. But those names alone, I wouldn't blame them for looking.

I don't trust WHDH though. They were the ones who leaked the 3 year/36 mil as a solid number. As we know, it's not that amount. I dunno maybe if I heard this from Dan Roche or even straight from the horse's mouth, I'll believe them.

Philly gave up on Lowell weeks ago- the reports now are that they have only about $10 million extra to spend, and they need pitching WAY more than a 3B (plus, they've got to worry about Aaron Rowand as well). Lowell is too expensive for them.

The Cards today spread the word that Rolen is definitely on the trading block- if we lose Lowell, he may not be a bad option for us. Not great, but not bad.

The Braves rumor has to be bunk, doesn't it? Unless they're thinking of moving Chipper to LF or trading him or something. Sounds quite unlikely.

I'm sure the Sox FO would hate to see Lowell go to the Cardinals--their draft pick is protected.

Ah, the hotstove...

This is kind of random, but has anyone seen this about Mike?

I had not seen that particular article, but I had heard that before- his parents both had family members killed by Castro (Mike was born in Puerto Rico, but his family is Cuban). The Globe followed up on that statement later:

Shortly after Lowell was acquired by the Red Sox, a reporter asked him about Castro.

"I hope he dies," Lowell said bluntly, and the headlines screamed his declaration the next day in bold tabloid print.

"He did not expect others to understand. How could they? When his teammates asked him about it, Lowell explained quietly, "If a politician says, 'I hope Osama Bin Laden dies,' everyone agrees with him, because that hits home after 9/11. Well, Castro hits home with me."

Thsi si getting absurd. Other sites, such as Joy Of Sox ( http://joyofsox.blogspot.com/2007/11/nyy-rod-at-3b-lowell-at-1b.html ) have linsk to articles that say all the 'deals' are for 3 year.

Some articles say 4, others 3. Either way its tme for Boston to step up his offer. If A-Rod is off the market, then we NEED Lowell.. and we NEED to keep the Yansk from havign him AND A-Rod at all costs.

PS, Texas Gal...

I did get an image of the WS ring from your site that's been cross-posted to my own. I DID link to you (I bet Im gonna be doing that alot), but if you'd rather I take it down, just let me know! I'm still new to this wSox blog community, so let me know!

You rblog is one of the best!

Those articles are from Tuesday and Wednesday morning- which is like AGES ago, in hot stove terms. I'm sure most teams would open with a 3 year deal, just to see if he'd bite- but why would Lowell listen to that? The only reason he's on the market is because he wants a four year deal.

The stuff about the four year deal came out a few hours ago- although it sounds like the Cardinals part has been denied by their front office (and the Braves part still doesn't make sense).

I suspect the Sox will go back to Mike with a firm, final offer- still a three year deal, but upping the price by $2-3 million- and then give him a deadline in which to respond (so they can move on to other options once and for all).

Glad to see someone else is an insomniac (the only cure for that is, of course, Mike Lowell in a Red Sox uni).

I have greater suspecions as I wronte in my blog. I ntoed that all 3-year claims coem from sources close to the 'team' and 4-years comes from sources close to the 'Lowell camp' which makes me think someone is tryign to play the market.

BTW.. it takes forever to write one damn entry sometimes. Then gettign formatting to work... I don't knwo how you pull off so much writing!

Very interesting observation. You may be on to something with that! I have no doubt both sides are spinning like crazy- it's the whole reason the three year offer was mysteriously leaked in the first place by the Sox.

And I am pretty much always awake late- certifiable night owl.

I'm all for Lowell testing the market but I'm with Meg -- wicked pissed if 4/55 is what lures our beloved 3B away.

With apologies to Texas Gal -- because I agree with her about feeding into the Me-Rod media maelstrom -- has anyone seen this hilarious (anti-Rod) Wojciechowski piece:

Too funny!

[ Texas Gal ] says:

OK. That's hilarious. If all future mentions of A-Rod are going to be that funny, I might have to reverse my ban. HANK IN THE BRONX: CALL ME. I THINK I MIGHT BE IN LOVE WITH YOU.

I'm still banning all nicknames, though- like: Gay-Rod, Stray-Rod, Slappy, Purple Lips, etc. Because those are just stupid and way overrused.
