Madras Pride

Jacoby was the focus of all the attention back in his hometown of Madras, Oregon today-- as the Jacoby Ellsbury Day parade (that I told you about back on Tuesday) went off without a hitch. Despite the threat of inclement weather derailing the parade, it went on as planned-- with Jacoby riding down the main street in Madras in the back of a convertible Corvette, with his name and #46 emblazoned on the side.

Jacoby's mom, dad and brothers each also got their own cars in the parade- which included some of the local firefighters and little leaguers and members of Jacoby's Madras High class of '02. At the Madras High gym, Jacoby was presented with a key to the city, an American flag and a Native American necklace. He spoke to the gathered crowds, and also had a little Q&A session with 10 local kids.

I have to give a special shoutout to this gem in the AP report on the event:

[Jacoby] recalled being so nervous he almost threw up driving to the ballpark for his first start for the Red Sox, and pitcher Josh Beckett advising him, "Just don't screw it up."
Beautiful. I enjoy the thought of Beckett mentoring the young players with gruff asides and confidence-building gems like this. Something tells me Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester are in for a treat down in Cotulla this winter.

Here's one video from the parade:

I've also got more video and a lot more photos of the day- after the jump...

Awwww, that quote about him being nervous and Beckett's "encouragement" is just priceless. *squishes Jacoby's cheeks*

And what he said in that video, about the parade? "This--this just puts tears in my eyes." Words don't even capture how sweet that is.

And, of course, he looks adorable as always...

Does he want ALL of the Boston--no, the world--to fall in love with him? Because he's making a really good case. And if he plays next year like he did in September and October, he'll REALLY make everyone love him.

This is probably the most girly thing I've ever said, right here. >

How cool for Jacoby to have his own parade in his hometown. I love this kid. He seems like such a sweet and humble guy, and he's got the potential to be one hell of a ball player. I'm excited to see how next season pans out for him, I'm hoping it's gonna be great.

Love the infinite wisdom of Mr. Beckett. HA HA. Our rookies are in good hands with Josh handing out those bits of advice. Gotta love him!

Next, he will be holding training sessions on how to conduct a press conference, Beckett style. :)

Oh my goodness, that is so adorable. Aww. One of my friends is from Oregon, and we keep grilling her on what Madras is like. I don't even think she minds much for she has seen Jacoby and knows how adorable he is.

Beckett quote = glee.

Awww this is great. He does seem very humble about it, and his mom seems so sweet and laid back. I wonder if his brothers play baseball and if they are as good as he is...

Beckett should be a motivational speaker. I'm sure Jacoby received lots of advice that day, but whose bit did he remember? Josh's. It makes me wonder if he said it a kind of threatening "I'll kick your ass" way just to fuck with Jacoby though, which would be really mean, but if so, it got the job done. So maybe he knows what he is doing haha.

Do we really think Beckett told him not to "screw it up"? From what we've seen, I'll bet --screw-- isn't exactly what was said.

Ellsbury is just awesome. I just feel like a dork for having such a baseball crush on the guy everyone has a baseball crush on. I feel like I might as well go out and buy a pink Sox hat... "I swear, I like him because he's a great player, honest!"

But he is good looking. I wish we could get a photo with his glasses on.

Margaret, I definitely agree with you. I have the biggest, pathetic-est baseball-crush on this guy (and he's almost 10 years older than I am, so it's REALLY pathetic).

I just tell everyone a .353 average is the sexiest thing about him...

We came over from Portland with our two boys to see Jacoby. The City and School District put on a first class event. You should be proud not only of Jacoby but of you entire community. Jacoby looked at my two boys and said, hey how ya doing. The look on my children's faces was priceless. Thanks to all of you and GO JACOBY!!!!

"Beckett should be a motivational speaker." - I'm still laughing.

Good to hear from someone who was there, Wade. And I'm so glad you and your kids had a great time. I'm hoping Jacoby converted that whole state to Red Sox fans!

I love reading this stuff from his hometown, it's so sweet! I, like every other girl in the world, have a HUGE crush on him! I just started watching the Sox this season, and then I saw him and found out that we have so much in common, i was Hooked! Now i live in my Ellsbury shirt and I cut out everything I read about him, he's my screeen saver on my laptop and a have about a dozen pics of him in my locker. I even went out on Halloween as him, with my single red sleeve and a Taco Bell bag, it was kinda lame but kinda funny at the same time! It's kinda pathetic but I need a reason to wake up in the morning and he is it! He's exactly seven years older than me, (we have the same b-day!) but it's still fun to dream !!! I'm just glad that I like him not only because he's gorgous, but ALSO because he's an amazing player and he's going all the way to the top! He's great in the outfield, he's great at bat, he's seriously just great! Yay Jahottie!

The parade was so much fun.......It was so crazy because I have had a crush on him since 5th grade (he is a year older than me) and now my chances have really gone down now that all the girls in the country know what I knew 12 years ago. He was really sweet ( I got teary eyed) when he spoke, he is exactly the same as he was when he was here. He will be here for a little while so I am super excited. I still cant believe that he plays for the Red Sox.......its so crazy. But you cant help but to love him....I know I still do =)

Just love Jacoby! He is one of the most exciting baseball players to come along in years. He is a class act and not full of himself like many athletes are. Sox fans are praying they dont trade him for Santana. If they do, you will hear the screams from Boston to Madras!!! Thanks for posting those great pictures! As for Beckett, he is just priceless!

Texas gal: I sent you an email a few days ago, just wanted to make sure you got it, and I didn't send it off to some random person...
