Random Sox Theatre: Dunkin Donuts

It's high time for another installment of Random Sox Theatre- and this time, we've got a clip from 2006 of Josh Beckett and Coco Crisp... behind the counter at a Dunkin' Donuts. I suppose if the whole major league thing doesn't work out, at least they'll have something to fall back on.

And speaking of Mr. Beckett - we've heard from Jonathan Papelbon, Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury and Curt Schilling about the hot stove madness... what does Josh think about it all? About the Santana rumors, and the sky-high contract Santana is sure to command?

It doesn't matter to me. It makes no difference. There are a lot of people who make more money than me who I had better years than. I'm happy where I'm at. I make plenty of money. I'm starting Opening Day, though.

Sweet Jesus- that, right there, is exactly why I adore him so much. Frank and honest, acknowledging his good fortune, not moneygrubbing for more- and yet 100% confident that his rightful place, no matter what, is to be the #1 Ace. Josh, with that quote right there, you just cemented yourself as my baseball boyfriend. You've earned it.

But he's not done yet. He's about to get downright sentimental.

You know how much I care about Jon Lester, but at the same time it's a business and we're in the business of winning baseball games. Jon Lester has a lot of stuff in front of him. They have to make that decision. I'm glad I don't have to make those decisions because I'm the type of personality where I would let those emotions get in the way, and hold on to a player because I like them. We have people who make those decisions who obviously don't have the same personality that I do.

Everybody has to understand that this is a business and the Red Sox are in the business of winning. It doesn't matter who it is. If they think of trading someone everybody has to understand that. I'll still talk to Jon Lester. I'm not saying I want them to trade Jon Lester for Johan Santana, but if the Red Sox think that's what they need to do to put themselves in the best position to win, that's what they need to do.

Well, Josh Beckett- I do declare! You've awful sweet beneath all that bluster. Once we get you out of the press room, you're a regular teddy bear. I adore the bonds the guys on this team share- and the obvious big brother role Josh has taken on with Jon is priceless.

eck joshy looks so ucky with all the facial hair! and coco with no hair?! but those little blurbs from him... they make me want to cry. hes such a sweet heart. I'm starting Opening Day, though. that is by far the best.

Now why did I just know you'd have a comment or two on that article as soon as I saw it on the Herald website? :)

I loved what he said about Lester. I have a large amount of love for him too, so if Beckett's close to him, that makes both of them even more awesome to me. (Dammit, now I'm going to start backpeddling on my dreams of a Beckett/Santana duo again. Argh.)

It's interesting how much Beckett changes when asked a good question. I don't blame him for getting bored with being asked the same old shit in the press room, but when someone asks him about something that he feels worthy of explaining, I think he's a really good interview. Maybe all he wants is for the reporters to put a little thought into what they ask. Or maybe it just depends on the person asking the question. Rob Bradford in particular seems to get a lot of good quotes from Josh, so I wonder if he's a really good interviewer or if Beckett just likes him more than other reporters. Or maybe he just has to be in the right mood to drop that so-called "surly" side. Who knows? [shrug]

Oh, and thanks for that video clip! Your blog is totally helping me through offseason withdrawel.

Aww. It's so funny how Josh is so, uh, brisk with the media and, as soon as you put him in the clubhouse, he's a big sweetie.

There are a lot of people who make more money than me who I had better years than. I'm happy where I'm at. I make plenty of money.

That is possibly the best thing said all offseason (its only contestant being a Lowell quote about how he doesn't think "my happiness should be judged just by dollars").

AAAAWWWW....it must be hard to get form relationships with your teammates, become truly friends, and then have them traded off. Very nice to know that Josh does, indeed, have that sweet, soft side.

I think you've hit it on the nose, mouse. He's very much like Eric Bedard- he doesn't like being asked stupid or repetitive questions. And he really hates being asked stupid questions in the middle of a big press conference- I suspect because he hates being interviewed on camera.

But get him out of the camera's glare, and ask him substantive questions, and he's very willing to oblige.

speaking of josh...i went to the curt schilling/john mccain event and they let me ask a question. being the lame one i am, i asked when josh was going to dance for us? curt said "you don't want to know...he's from texas."

I loved the "I'm starting Opening Day, though." He said this past season that he didn't consider himself an ace since he didn't start on Opening Day, so he had better be on the mound that day...

He's not always uptight in front of cameras...during the interview before the Beckett Bowl, he was actually joking with reporters and laughing and what not ...but the one or two that tried to ask him about baseball got really terse answers. There's a Dan Roche interview from '06 floating where he asks him what he thinks about Boston and Josh said something like "there's a lot of great bars...not that I got to bars," and laughed. Maybe he just hates press conferences and/or talking about baseball:-P

what is he supposed to say when asked about his salary? money is a pretty personal thing, even if you are a public person like he is. especially being a guy, it's a pretty personal thing being asked about how 'little' you get paid, any man would get defensive.
i think he's matured a lot since the marlins, i think he learned a lot from the not so great seasons he has had. probablly more than from the great seasons he's had
