It Is Official: Josh Beckett Kicks Ass

They've only announced one of the This Year In Baseball Awards so far, and already it's clear that the public knows a good pitcher when they see it. Congratulations to Josh Beckett- the 2007 Starting Pitcher of the Year. Out of a field of 10 candidates, Josh snagged an overwhelming 35.5% of the vote- the next closest was Jake Peavy, at 19.4%. Yankees fans managed to somehow get Wang up to 3rd, over C.C. Sabathia at 4th.

When reached for comment, Josh said, "[insert reference to executing pitches here]" and "[insert reference to owing it all to his teammates here]" and "[insert random cussword here]".

I noticed another saying of his that cracks me up almost as much as "executing pitches"--- "manufacturing runs".

I love how they all have their vocabularies. Paps uses the word "situation" in every sentence. Jacoby tends to say "definitely" and "you know" a lot. Collectively they seem to share phrases too... just things I've noticed.

I take it as a good thing--I like them not being overly groomed for the press. It's personality.

PS--something I've been dying to ask, if off topic--in two Friendly's Scoops, the one with Millar and the one with Youk--they use a term to mean an ugly person that I have never heard before. Mollients? Something like that. Anyone have any idea what he's saying?

TG--don't mean to take the spotlight off Josh with that PS, just curious. Congrats to our man Beckett.

The quote will be: "All i did was execute my pitches but really the award goes to all my teammates they made me the pitcher i am today but F yeah it rocks to be the best"

Here's a variation on Mathies quote:
"You just got to make it as simple as possible and just go out and execute pitches. You know the award is at least half Tek's along with the rest of my teammates."

Can't figure out the cussin' tho cause I don't think he'd cuss when making this quote, at this time. Unless...he was asked a stupid question.

Margaret--possibly you mean "mulligan"?

Caroline--

I thought at first that it might be mulligan, but upon listening again it didn't sound right. So, entirely possible, but I've also never heard that before. Am I just oblivious? Is it a regional thing?

You can hear it at approximately 2 min 10 seconds into the Scoop with Youk (which is fun to say).

Margaret: would you believe I wondered that same thing? I remember I even went to Urban Dictionary to see if it was some new dirty slang I wasn't aware of... but I couldn't find it defined anywhere.

And ally: I'm not sure Tom and Josh would have much in common were they to hang out in person - but they could definitely talk about "executing", if nothing else.

Josh kind of has Brady-esque hair up there in that picture, too... but I think that was a one-time deal. I doubt he would spend the time it would take to make his hair do the "casually tousled" look. If his hair looks like he just woke up like that, it's probably because he just did.

they have 3 things in common: great athletes, aesthetically pleasing, and stupid as hell

texasgal: you live in chicago right? i'm moving there in a couple weeks and i was wondering if you know the name of a bar near lincoln park that has a new england sports theme to it? i drove by it over thanksgiving and can't remember the name to save my life!

Tex & Caroline--

You know, there were a few minutes when I thought about how maybe trying to figure out what was said by our dear closer when he was given a microphone and a tv camera was not going to be very fruitful... I'm not sure he really goes for any prizes in oratory. He may have made up a word.

I bet Tom and Josh could talk about the models they've dated. They've got a solid track record in that, both of them. Josh seems pretty private about that, but one on one with a fellow jock he might open up.

Also, they could muse on how much they both kick ass.

"So Josh, I have to tell you, I was thinking the other day about my record-breaking achievements."
"F**k yeah."

And so on.

Yankees fans managed to somehow get Wang up...

*snicker* Sorry. Deep down I think I must be 12 or something.

Starr--I agree that that's what he'd say. Imagine if Josh really did give half of his awards to Tek, and they each just had all of these half-awards...

But yay for Josh!

Not sure if anyone saw this when it aired, but Beckett was interviewed this past spring on the beach on Mohegan Sun Sports Tonight:
