At Least It Wasn't Her First Name

There was a great little article in the Bangor News about the World Series trophy making an appearance up in Maine at the Harold Alfond Sports Arena on Monday.

That picture of the University of Maine baseball team fawning over the trophy was cute, but it wasn't what caught my eye in the article:

Michelle and Bill Harmon of Milo brought their 5-month-old daughter, Marissa Fenway Harmon, to take a family photo with the trophy. Marissa's parents gave her that middle name to commemorate their favorite baseball park.
My first instinct was to think, "Fenway? You named your daughter Fenway?!?". While that sounds like an excellent name for a pet, it's not exactly given name material. Great surname, not so great name for a girl. On second thought, though, at least they didn't give her Fenway as a first name, and they could have done a hell of a lot worse. And thank goodness her parents weren't fans of a team like Tampa Bay or Minnesota. She could have been Marissa Tropicana Harmon... or Marissa Metrodome Harmon.

I was on an airplane this summer, and there was a little girl sitting behind me named... Fenway. And I'm planning on naming my first daughter Papelbonne.

Thank goodness it's a middle name! I read a story a while back about a couple that named their son Varitek. I kind of like it lol

I guarantee you julia that someone, somewhere in N.E. is going to name their daughter Papelbonne... totally unironically.

Fenway - great pet name. NOT A GOOD FIRST NAME.

I'm going to name my children Fenway, Wrigley and Citizens Bank.

Eck! Don't get me started on baby names. My husband and I bothed really liked the name Beckett for our second (and last!!) son. We were going with either James Beckett or Beckett James. It honestly had nothing to do with THE BECKETT, my husband is not a Sox fan. Three days before he was born my husband vetoed it based on thinking everyone would associate the name with the pitcher and how great was doing this past season (my son was born July 31st.). Of course, my husband also liked the names Satchel, (for Satchel Paige) and Washington (for the stinkin' Skins.) Let's not forget the coolest baseball cartoon ever-Everyone's Hero-and its protagonist...ummmmm ahemmmmm Yankee Irving. There was also an article in SI this fall about a couple who named their daughter Wrigley (their last name was Fields.)

stinkin' Skins is right!
A co-worker had a cat named Dallas. She named the pet before the kids came to de-program that mess.
Edie's son on Desperate Housewives named his dog Fenway - yes, after the Park! (I love that show.)

I was just reminded of that last scene in Fever Pitch--

"Ben says if it's a boy, they'll name him Ted Williams Wrightman. If it's a girl, Carla Yastrzemski Wrightman."

I stood in line for nearly an hour and a half, and still didn't get to see the trophy, and I'm not sure if I've recovered yet.

And, because I haven't seen you mention it: http://www.wcsh6.com/news/local/article.aspx?storyid=79203
Thought you might be interested. :)

A woman I used to work with has two beagles - Fenway and Camden. Now THAT I can get behind.

I've seen so many pets named Fenway that that alone would make it a bad person-name. But nothing can top the article I read yesterday that stated that three different families had named a child ESPN.

You mean the article I linked in this post? :)

Fenway, Camden & Wrigley - that would make a great set of pet names.

doh! I couldn't for the life of me remember where i'd actually found that link! silly me. I really can't believe that, though. Who names their child that?!

last february, i had to put down my 14 year-old dog fenway. i never got anything but great comments about that. my vet even referenced our dogs in a column he wrote for the local paper. our other dog is named wrigley. my wife and i are actually cardinals fans (me, i'm a life-long red sox fan, but i also root for the cards having moved to missouri), but the cardinals do not have a great stadium if you want to use it as inspiration for pet names.

ps: 2004 was bittersweet for me but i was a lot happier than i was sad!

While it does seem a tad strange, it could be worse. Say Camden or Shea, Oh wait Shea is actually a girl's name...that can function as a guy's name. Doh!
