Soundtrack to a Championship

As a little Friday treat, just right for listening to while getting ready to go out or pre-partying before playoff action, I'm sharing my own personal soundtrack to the Red Sox 2007 season. These are the songs that are part of my memories of the championship, for a host of different reasons-- classic Fenway tunes, players' at-bat or entrance music, songs played at ballparks, songs played during celebrations after wins... or even random songs played during NESN montages that I associate with the '07 Sox. Enjoy!

And what about you? What songs will remind you of the '07 season?

"Iron Man" by Ozzy. When Mike Lowell comes up to the plate, that's the song they play.

I had to download "Shipping up to Boston"--drives my daughter crazy ;-)

Fabulous playlist.

I would add Kanye's "Good Life" because I always think of Manny's ALDS walkoff when I hear, I go for mine. I got to shine. Now throw your hands up in the sky.

What poser on the Sox uses Cole Hamels' entrance music?

Let it be known: you CAN purchase Okajima Okey-Dokey on iTunes.

Was a little surprised to see Gwen Stefani on there--what's the story there? Also curious about "B.O.B."...

Actually, any explanations would be interesting, if you're willing to share, though some of them I know.

I'm suprised, Tex. Never thought we'd have nearly identical tastes in music.

-anyway.
I can't see Papi without hearing Perry Como, or see Josh without hearing "Paralyzer".

final countdown! Who's anthem was that when walking up to bat?

Awesome selection. You can add Kryptonite - 3 Doors Down which is Tek's song. Wild Thing by the Troggs, Paps (sometimes)
I'm a Flirt by R Kelly is another one that Manny uses and Welcome to the Jungle which is Schills.
On a personal note, Beautiful Day by U2 reminds me of the Red Sox as a whole.

Didn't the Beasties' Sabotage figure in some montages? Well if it didn't it should have. You can never have too much Beastie Boys.

I've had Mute Math's Typical and The Bravery's Believe in continual screaming anthemic rotation as part of my summer-into-fall soundtrack, but when it comes to the Sox I mostly stick to basics: I played Shipping Up to Boston in the office before every weekday post season game and while I'm not the sing-along type, after Rally Monday I was given to spontaneously shouting "Boston you're my home!" without a Standell in sight.

"Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies. FOX played it once when Josh Beckett was striding off the mound during the Danielle Peck Game and my friend and I literally babbled because it was so hot.

What is Cole's entrance music? I can't remember.

I should do a Readers Playlist, with all the other songs y'all think of.
And a Players' At-Bat/Entrance songs.

Story behind "Sweet Escape" - from early in the season, the Phillies played that song EVERY SINGLE GAME at home in Philly. So it became kind of a joke - that at every park (except Wrigley and Fenway), you were guaranteed to hear that song at least once. And then in the postseason, I heard that at every game in Cleveland and Denver. And also "Vengaboys" and that horrid "Cotton Eyed Joe" remake. So, really, "Sweet Escape" is there because it's less assaulting on the ears than "Vengaboys" and "Cotton Eyed Joe"- and it reminds me of those postseason away games.

"B.O.B." is one of my go-to baseball tracks - and it's on a baseball CD I listened to all year, beginning in Spring Training. Earlier this year, the Ladies... did a post where we picked out at-bat music, and mine was "Lapdance" - but "B.O.B." was runner-up.

My list

However I have a few things to just add for those who decide not to peek

"3's and 7's"-Queens of the Stone Age (on the day off between Games 4 and 5, I was kind of like 'Gimme a sign' sort of mood and this song was on and for some reasn I listened through and the name of the song just really struck me...and it was oddly prophetic. I mean the score of Game 5 was 7-3 Red Sox, number 7 came through in Game 7, it took 3 games to win the ALCS, and they did go on a 7 game winning streak)

"Do You Believe in Magic"-Lovin Spoonful. (I swear to god, I kept hearing songs with the words "magic" in it on August 31st. You know what happened the next day)

"September"-Earth Wind and Fire (The Red Sox came off a humiliating 3 game sweep by the Jays and had lost 2-3 from the Yankees who were now dangerously close to taking the division away. "the 21st night of September" seemed to change everybody's minds as Beckett won his 20th game and the Red Sox had a very reassuring win against the Devil Rays that day....the next day they would clinch a playoff spot and one week later, the division)

"Don't Look Back"-Boston (They played this a lot in the ALCS. I love this damn song)

"What is Life?"-George Harrison(I have no freaking clue why but this song makes me think of Jon Lester. I wish I had an explanation, but I don't)

"The Final Countdown"-Europe(Manny had this as his at-bat music for a while in the season...seriously. It was as awesome as you may think)

[gasp] You do not know what Cole's entrance music is? FOR SHAME. (It's "Thunderstruck.")

That is so true about "Sweet Escape." And I think it's funny that it was so universal; EVERYBODY in the crowd would go "woooooo hoo, YEEEEEE hoo!"

What's the deal with Lady Sov and Go! Team? Where'd you hear those?

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 11, 2008 6:24 PM

Oddly enough, "Thunderstruck" is on there because of the White Sox. They play it before every single game in the Cell, at the same time they're playing their introductory montage. I went to that three-game Red Sox-White Sox stand here in Chicago- the one where the first night was a 3-hour rain delay (that turned into a rainout) - and then the makeup day game the next day where there was only a couple of thousand people in the stands. And I had those kick-ass seats behind the on-deck circle. So "Thunderstruck" makes me think of those games.

And "Here Comes Your Man" is totally going on my '08 baseball playlist. But for 2007, I will never again be able to hear "Paralyzer" and not think of Beckett.

Out of all those songs, though- "Stronger" by Kanye West is the #1 Sox Song of 2007 for me. I watched Game 5 of the ALCS at my house, by myself, because I was too nervous to be around anyone else-- much less at a bar. And the Fox broadcast team (I'm looking at you, McCarver) was so horrid. When Curt got into some trouble, and McCarver kept blabbing, I finally had to mute the TV, and just blasted Kanye West instead and danced around (drinking bourbon) to distract myself. After that, it became a good luck charm, and I listened to it before every single other playoff game.

Also, I guess the bourbon drinking became a good luck charm, too - no surprise there. Coors Field + full bar = greatness.

Oh - and I heart that Lady Sov song - because I'm still a sucker for British music. That was a song I picked up and added on to my gameday playlist during the season - because the lyrics are PERFECT for some good old fashioned pregame trash talk.

Go! Team is there because it was also a pregame song - but more specifically, that is the song that I was listening to when the plane touched down in New York to go to the Yankees-Sox game (yes, I was violating FAA regulations by listening to my iPod while the plane was landing). And then again when I was riding the train up to the Bronx to go to the game. And while I was walking around the Bronx before and after the game. I was apparently in a very Go! Team mood that day.

She Wants Revenge's "I Wanna fucking tear you apart" always makes me think of Josh.

It's nice to have sentimental favorites, isn't it?

TG--

Nice to know that someone else danced around to Kanye during Sox games! That song is fantastic, and is not only my favorite Sox song, but is also my own personal go-out-and-kick-butt theme.

I also totally agree about The Way I Are--that was the at-bat music for one of the Rockies (I'm thinking Atkins...) and once it got stuck in my head... it never left.

Actually, a weird one is "Say It Right" by Nelly Furtado because it was playing in the background during a BP interview with some player, and I was like, hey, I like that song too. Just a quick moment, but for some reason it stuck as related to the Sox.

And "Here Comes Your Man" cracks me up-- I was watching the game and had a double take-- "No way are they playing the Pixies, dude!"

Oh, I was so close to the bottom--I was so glad that no one had mentioned "Stronger". It was so definitely my Sox Song this year. I got mildly obsessed with it around mid-September and, for example, played it when the Yankees/O's game was unfolding/collapsing on September 28th... the Night of the Papeldance. And plus, it gets me completely pumped. If I had an at-bat song, "Stronger" would be my choice, hands down.

Except for maybe "Paralyzer". Definitely a close second. I loved it even before it made me think of Beckett.

But thank you so much--I love coming up with "baseball songs", especially ones that match specific players (take, for example, Alex Rodriguez and "Beautiful Disaster"). So many great songs I wouldn't have thought of, from the playlist and the comments. :D

GREAT list! B.O.B, Black Betty and Stonger are probably my favorite, although I like most of them.

Others that I associate with '07 are "Day in the Life" by the Beatles, cause of that '04 ALCS/WS montage they played before the PS games, and "Pressure" by Billy Joel, cause Fenway played that somewhat frequently. And, as ashamed as I am to admit this, "Magic to Do" from Pippen, because they always played that about an hour before each game at Fenway (cause I am a loser that would show up an hour early a lot, and I like the "Join us..." part at the beginning...not so much the rest of the song though).

Did anyone else find it really annoying when they would play "Holiday" by Green Day like a million times on Fox duirng the WS but didn't do anything like that for any Sox players? Or how they kept playing the Drew Carey "Cleveland Rocks" when we played Cleveland? I don't know why, but this really irked me.

I really can't remeber which game, but during one
of the post-season games I could've sworn they did a montage of Becket with "This is Why I'm Hot" by Mims in the background. Does anyone else remember this, or did I just dream it up?

Also, I love how almost every sports team uses "I'm Shipping up to Boston" now. Without the Sox, where would the DKM's be??

Ahh, Texy, you do not disappoint! ANYTHING by Earth Wind and Fire....makes me feel 17 again.

How about Queen's Under Pressure and I like Praise by FatBoy Slim. U2's The Sweetest Thing for Jacoby would be perfect.

I heard Fergie's Glamorous at Camden Yards last year but for Fenway....well maybe just for the Taco Bell reference.

Most peculiar '07 association: I felt really sad during the game on 9/16 (the disappointing Yankees/Sox game in which Schilling experienced failure to keep baseballs in the park) and turned to looking up Tomoe Shinohara and Morning Musume videos on YouTube. So I'm going to associate Schilling's bad starts with "Kurukuru Mirakuru" and "Koi no Dance Site" for the next year. XD
