What To Do While You're Waiting

Gather round, folks- and settle in for a long day of waiting around, with nothing to look at but the ever-refreshing Virtual Waiting Room screen. As long as we're all in the same boat, we might as well share the boredom together.

So feel free to use the comments on this post to talk about whatever you'd like - share your success stories getting tickets, or your frustrations. Talk about the Sox or baseball in general. Or give us your thoughts on last night's episode of Friday Night Lights- or discuss who has the better wardrobe: Blair or Serena. Anything's fair game!

Here's some conversation topics to think about: let's talk National League (since I have a feeling that once the season starts, the talk in the Sox world will be almost exclusively AL). Which NL club do you think will be playing in the 2008 World Series? Who do you think will win the NL East: Mets, Phillies or Braves? Which NL pitcher will snag the '08 Cy Young- will it be Webb or Peavy or Haren... or will it be someone else entirely? What club will end up with the worst record in the NL?

For the record- I totally covet Blair's clothes.

I'm trying to decide how many waiting room windows I can open simultaneously without freezing up my computer.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 8:37 AM

I've got my laptop and my desktop fired up. Also, I have my therapist on speed dial, because my super-competitive side is lurking in my brain and somehow the ability to buy tickets is equivalent to "winning".

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 8:41 AM

Oh, another fun activity:

WHY ISN'T MY HEAT WORKING???? This, I am sure, will be a wonderful distraction from waiting. You know, sitting there with a hairdryer on my houseplants while screaming into the phone with my landlord and keeping one eye on the computer screen.

27 degrees. Dammit.

[ Jaymers ] says:

3 MINUTES!!!

[ Jaymers ] says:
on January 26, 2008 8:58 AM

2 MINUTES!!

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 8:59 AM

I sort of forgot to go to sleep last night, so it will be interesting to see how long I can stay awake. At least my heat is working.

[ Jaymers ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:00 AM

1 MINUTE....

alright guys, let's go! *cue stare at computer - fast forward six hours - still staring, cartoonish-looking eyes, drool on computer*

10:00!

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:01 AM

AND IT BEGINS!

I actually made myself make plans for tonight so there would be a cutoff point.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:05 AM

You know I think one reason they set it up this way is to give Sox fans the pleasure of reliving those 86 years.

With every 30 second countdown... THIS IS IT! I FEEL IT! I BELIEVE!!! And then ooohhhhh the disappointment.

[ Anonymous ] says:

i have to work this afternoon, so four hours of purgatory will be the max for me. whee!

i have AN ENTIRE POT OF COFFEE to keep myself company. 0.o

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:06 AM

More fun: watching paint dry... or watching the VWR window reload over and over again?

[ sda ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:09 AM

Ho Hum. Let the virtual coma begin.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:11 AM

I got my netflix all stacked up here for entertainment.

Plus, TG---THE ENTIRE SEASON OF GOSSIP GIRL. How great is that show? It's so delicious.

[ Ellen ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:11 AM

I'm playing MahJong in a smaller window while I wait.

[ Julia ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:12 AM

So...how about those Tigers?

The local news anchorman s just announcing that you can buy tickets by calling or buying online at redsox.mlb.com. He's all cheery and hopeful. I'm going to kill him.

Oh god I wish they didn't have a refresh button...I can't handle this...I'M WEAK.

I agree, Blair's wardrobe is better.

[ Meg ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:13 AM

I've got 57 windows open...because my birthday is 5/7:-P

I wish there was some type of program to install that would beep or something when the window went to a new site (but not if it refreshed)...if I knew anything about programming I would totally attempt to make that. And have it play the "Hallelujah!" chorus of Handel's Messiah instead of just beep.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:13 AM

My addiction to Gossip Girl was totally unexpected. I thought it was going to be a crappy ripoff of OC (which I never got into)... and instead, it's turned out to be one of my favorite shows on TV.

I'm watching random British TV shows on my computer while I wait.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:15 AM

Hey, so if this thing goes (yeah right) while I'm downstairs fiddling with the pilot light, what is the time limit on how long it will wait for me?

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:17 AM

I just can't stay away from campy tv shows, that's my problem. So how are we feeling about Jenny Humphrey these days?

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:20 AM

I would kill for a program that would play a sound when the refresh cycle ended and the ticket window loaded. I would totally nap.

And speaking of the Tigers - can you believe about Jose Canseco trying to extort Magglio Ordonez?

[ james ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:21 AM

mine went off for the sox pax when i was down folding laundry for about 5 min so i dont know where it went off in there, but i still got in when i came up.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:24 AM

Thanks james-- for some reason I feel the need to investigate my pilot light.

GODDAMN I'M GETTING COLD.

I have to be able to feel my fingers in order to select tickets, so maybe it would be a good use of my time.

[ jenny again ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:25 AM

i swear, the best part of this is me constantly telling myself that SOMEONE is being allowed to buy tickets, so why shouldn't it be me next? oh, me and my eternal optimism. ;D

p.s. that's me up there anonymously declaring that i have a whole pot of coffee. ;D

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:26 AM

Sounds productive to me too. Heat is important, as well as typing the right stuff in, i was selected for yankee tickets last year and almost typed my credit card number in wrong! That would have been a disaster and a half! i'm going to do laundry, again. maybe it'll be good luck for me! *laugh* who am i kidding?

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:27 AM

Ok, gonna take the risk.

Will report back.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:30 AM

I'm superstitious enough, that I'd do laundry again if i were you James... just in case. I'm still jealous of those of you who got Sox Packs!

And jenny- I know exactly what you mean.

[ Julia ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:30 AM

I can't say I'm Jenny's biggest fan...I miss her as Cindy Lou Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. She was much cuter then.

That Canseco...how desperate can a person be for money anyway?
On that note...who read Vindicated?

[ Julia ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:31 AM

*I meant Jenny Humphrey by the way...not any other real Jennys. Sorry :)

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:33 AM

No f'n luck. Time to call the landlord. Dammit.

PS Pats fans-- have you seen manningface.com? that's what I feel like right now, those faces.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:34 AM

No matter how annoying Jenny can be, I wouldn't even notice because I've reserved all my eyerolls this year for Julie Taylor on FNL.

I love how Dan and Jenny are supposed to be relatively un-wealthy, and yet Jenny still has almost as many fabulous outfits as Blair. Also, Dan's ex-girlfriend BUGS. I want her to move back to Vermont or wherever she was before.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:39 AM

no laundry luck this time, but last time it was folding and i'm only on the washing stage now. i got a long way to go.

[ Julia ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:40 AM

I KNOW! What's her name again...Vanessa or Veronica. No it's Vanessa. Wait I don't know. Oh well, she's really annoying.

Can't say I watch FNL...is it any good?

Being unwealthy in the Upper East Side doesn't say much anyway.

"Our circuits are busy please try your call again later-" and that's where I chuck my phone against the wall. This is just cruel.

[ cache ] says:

[ cache ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:43 AM

are you going to do this all over again for cubs tickets come feb 22?

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:43 AM

James - start folding wet laundry. I'd do it.

Julia - FNL is my favorite show on TV, hands down. The book on which the show (and movie) was based is one of my all-time favorites as well.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:46 AM

If it's possible, trying to get Cubs tickets is even more frustrating. After years and years, I have yet to get in and snag Opening Day tickets. And Cubs Opening Day is UNREAL - it's like Mardi Gras, for baseball. It's one big huge drunken party.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:47 AM

*laugh* that might actually be a decent idea now that you mention it. Its almost worth purchasing the ultimate membership just to not have to waste this entire day away to get tickets! almost....

Its so much easier to get tickets to see them in baltimore and i get so much closer. why do we subject ourselves to this again?

[ jenny again ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:48 AM

julia - this real life jenny took no offense! ;D

tg - loved the FNL book SO MUCH; have the 1st season of the tv show on dvd sitting right here (still unwatched - been too distracted by my world series dvds!)

48 minutes gone, 192 minutes left to spend before work! :: giddy ::

[ gretchen0720 ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:50 AM

James...I say the same thing about Tampa... it's so much easier to get tickets there... and it's almost 80% Sox 20% Ray fan ratio. It's almost Fenway WAY South

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:52 AM

I really need to go to a game in Tampa. Toronto, too. I finally got to go to Yankee Stadium and Camden this year. I love getting to go to new ballparks.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:52 AM

Oh its more like 90% sox fans 10% O's fans in baltimore. Its that sad i'm an O's mini season ticket holder just to be able to purchase discounted red sox tickets and get access to the premium tickets. Sat 2 rows behind the sox dugout last year down there. That was sweet! Last year you could trade games in for all non weekend red sox games, which was really sweet, but this time you cant. so anyone want any O's vs the Mariners tickets? :P

[ cache ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:53 AM

how about the white sox? do people even show up for opening day over there?

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:54 AM

Has anyone been to spring training? i'm going down this year to see them play when they come visit the O's (Free season ticket holder tickets! Boo Rah!), anyone have any advice on well anything? Need to add to my papelbon and beckett autograph collection!

[ Julia ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:54 AM

I should check out FNL then.
I'm glad, Real-Life Jenny :)

Would anyone like to aid in the construction of my conspiracy theory? It basically states that the VWR is led by Al Qaeda and that they hold all of the tickets until one random moment when ONE person snags a game and then pull back and laugh as everyone goes crazy. I think I've already gone crazy.
I'm holding two phones up to my ear, one phone on speaker in my hand and all of my computers are doomed at the moment.

Aaah, the suffering of being a Red Sox fan.
Or Cubs fan as you were saying.

[ jenny again ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:55 AM

james - went to my first sox/o's game in baltimore last april and i said "GO SOX!" to the first sox jersey-wearing fan i saw on the street, all excited-like, and then i realized EVERYONE ON THE STREET WAS WEARING A SOX JERSEY. it was pretty awesome.

[ Julia ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:57 AM

Oooh I'm going to Spring Training as well this year! I'm pulling some Francona strings to make things work out (muahaha).
My best advice is bring your own water bottles. Yes that's plural. Actually I hope they let you this year...
Oh and wear sunscreen. I don't know where you're from but it's difficult for a Bostonian down there.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:58 AM

Yea i have the regular phone, the cell phone on redials, and of course the VWR screen of joy. Who needs WMDs? they have the red sox tickets held hostage

Jenny- I've gone to O's Yankees games down there, and i STILL see about 1-2k people wearing red sox gear with me. Thats an experience. especally the 1 game the Yanks lost in the bottom of the 9th. hehe

[ cache ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:58 AM

I went down in 2001. Back in the days of Wilton Veras, Shea Hillenbrand, and Frank Castillo...

[ gretchen0720 ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:59 AM

I'm doing my first Spring Training trip this year.. and there's only like 15 teams within a 2 hour radius of me.

[ Meg ] says:
on January 26, 2008 9:59 AM

In Tampa they practically give the tickets away! I used to be able to get ten rows from the field along a baseline for $20 through my job! And often, local businesses had promos for ticket vouchers if you bought something from them...over the 8 years I was in Tampa, I probably went to 40+ Sox games, and I doubt I spent over $800 total on tickets for them.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:00 AM

I go to spring training every year - and if I can help it, I won't ever miss it again. I actually go down to Clearwater- my friends and I base ourselves out of there. Red Sox spring training crowds are unreal!

White Sox opening day will be full as well - it's just different on the South Side because the Cell isn't in the middle of a neighborhood with a whole bunch of bars around. I still love going to games there- and they have a BULLPEN BAR. It sits right on the warning track, right next to the bullpen. It's genius.

[ Jaymers ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:01 AM

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

does anyone actually get in during the first hour? could someone please comment that has gotten through, you know, to give me a little glimmer or beaken of hope?

[ cache ] says:

how long do you normally wait in this waiting room?

[ Jaymers ] says:

sincerely,

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:02 AM

Julia - I'm from PA, my G\f has family down there and we were down in Dec, and it was brutal. going from 20 degrees here to 80 down there. The water bottle idea is a good one, i'll have to see if you can take them in to the O's spring training place

So.. anyone get though yet?

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:03 AM

Landlord called. Help is on the way. Trying to stay optimistic but this is not a great day so far.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:04 AM

Maybe all your bad luck was used up on the heater - and now you'll only have good lucky left for getting tickets.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:04 AM

cache - I got though for sox pax, and it was about 3.75 hours, about 1:45 pm i finally got though. and i was one of the SERIOUSLY lucky ones from what i've read. so basically expect to be here all day, and if you get though earlier then 5pm consider yourself lucky

meg- maybe i'll have to look into comming down to tampa for a game then. Too bad it isnt close to Ft Lauderdale, then i'd have free lodging too.

[ Julia ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:05 AM

Oh no...every Saturday I go to the supermarket for an elderly woman because she can't shop for herself...I may have to tell her that she won't be eating today.

No I'm not that mean. Sadly, I must go carry out my civic duties.

Good luck everybody!

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:05 AM

someone must be getting though. 6/21 and 6/22 have limited availability allready. those the interleague vs the cards i'd guess?

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:05 AM

James - so how does a PA guy wind up a Sox fan? Not a Bucs or Phils guy? (I ask, because I heart the Phillies - that's why I'm in Clearwater for Spring Training)

[ Meg ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:10 AM

The Ted Williams museum at Tropicana is really cool too, so show up early if you go to games there so you can walk through it...plus Papelbon's dad helps run it!

I just decided to re-watch WS Game 4 and score it, since I haven't done that yet...that should help keep me optimistic:-D

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:10 AM

My G\f says i'm a closet phillies fan, since i grew up with them, but i always was a big fan of Nomar, then when they traded him i wasnt too happy with the sox for 2 years or so then last year a girl i was dating was a big sox fan and she got me back into it. I do goto a number of phillies games though (G\f is a mets fan, its a fun rivalry there). Cant wait for the interleague games. i'll be at all 3! allready have my hotel booked. :P

Have fun Julia, we'll probably be here when you get back at this rate!

[ james ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:14 AM

silence... everyone get though all at once except me?

[ Meg ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:16 AM

I got through!

[ gretchen0720 ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:16 AM

no....
*checks Rays sight to seen maybe when they will announce their ticket sales...*

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:17 AM

Meg - Yay! Whats availability looking like?

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:18 AM

I had such optimism this morning about getting tickets. Now, after just over an hour of waiting, I'm remembering what it was like to wait for 20+ hours in December with no luck.

Oh, and I waited for 2 solid days in October trying to get World Series tickets in Denver - and failed then too. The failing to get tickets sucks- but it's the waiting that leads to nothing that's soul-crushing.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:19 AM

Yay Meg!

[ cache ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:19 AM

...still waiting

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:21 AM

Yea the waiting is the worst part. G\f went to the gym, she asked if i wanted to go. i just looked at her. I got the big sigh. oh well. its 2 sats a year we give up. not too terribly bad. She'll get over it. :P

[ Meg ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:25 AM

Availability seemed pretty good still, but I just searched for single seats...I got 8 single RFGS seats for 8 games, all in section 10, which is still far enough infield that you can see well! Got all the Cards games, 2 Diamondbacks's, Patriots Day and two Brewers! I'm amazed I actually got through! So it is possible! I had no luck until Sunday night during the last sale...

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:25 AM

Hey, fun little thing I just found on universal hub:

the mystical connection between dice-k and dunkies

http://japanesemasshole.blogspot.com/2008/01/dicek-fate-was-tied-by-dunkin.html

(oh man, could i use a trip to dunkies right now)

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:28 AM

meg - good for you enjoy the games! you get though online or on the phone?

margaret - heh thats funny. a trip to dunkin would be nice right now i agree!

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:29 AM

I am starving. I would kill for some Dunkin Donuts right now.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:31 AM

Meg - If I was in Boston, I would totally do the same thing- buy single tickets for every home game I could get my hands on. I sort of do that with the Cubs as it is! It's very easy to do that when I only have to walk yards away from my front door to go to a game.

[ gretchen0720 ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:32 AM

dammit!! I just got teased!!! Anyone else get teased? Almost connect them refresh to VWR.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:33 AM

hey TG how are the 86 jays doing from your perspective? feeling ok about them padres?

has curt accepted a trade yet?

[ Meg ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:33 AM

Online...I've been calling too, but no luck (the phone system SUCKS!). Plus on the phone you can only buy 8 tickets for up to 2 games...online you can get 8 for 8 different games so I like that better.

Also, the title of the page changes to "Boston Red Sox Ticketing..." so if anyone is just watching the title bars, that is what to look for! Good luck!

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:33 AM

gretchen - yea i had that happen about an hour ago. my heart almost stopped. Ugh. Oh well.

[ cache ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:38 AM

tg- maybe you can help me with this...there is a new england theme bar over in lincoln park. is it on clybourn?

[ Ellen ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:38 AM

I had that tease thing happen to me a couple times back in December. It was very irritating.

[ fc ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:47 AM

Meg - is it obvious how to get multiple games at one time? In Dec I recall only being able to get one game or pack at a time, then going back to VWR hell.

[ Meg ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:51 AM

After you select you tickets for the game you want, it brings you to that "Shopping Cart" type screen (not sure if it's actually called that). There is a link towards the bottom, might be highlighted but can't recall exactly, that says "Select Tickets for Additional Games," so I just clicked that to select the other ones, and didn't have a problem. If you just click "back" I think it does send you back to the VWR.

[ fc ] says:
on January 26, 2008 10:51 AM

P.S. Glad to see I'm not the only Soxgeek who goes for single tickets!

[ jenny again ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:05 AM

i got in on the phone ... only to learn that they wouldn't guarantee me two seats together for either of the two games i want to go to. because the point of each of those games was the spend time with my companion (roommate for one, brother for the other), i said no to the single seats and got myself kicked out of the system. maybe my luck online will be better ... ?

D'OH! ;D

[ cache ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:05 AM

anyone else online shopping/browsing as they wait

[ Meg ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:07 AM

I love going by myself, just cause it is so easy to go then...you don't have to coordinate plans or anything like that. And the people sitting around me are almost always friendly, and talk about baseball and not other happenings...which I find usually isn't the case when I go with people I know:-P Not that I don't like going with others, but it's nice to be able to focus on baseball.

Plus, in the event that I get invited to go with friends or something and prefer to do that, it's not like it's difficult to get rid of the extra single one...the "No Scalp Zone" at Fenway always has a lot of singles waiting, and there is always Ebay or Craigslist too.

[ fc ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:10 AM

Cool, TY - now we'll see if I get to use that knowledge. But I already have some games so I'm lucky enough not to feel any pressure now.

[ fc ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:13 AM

That was TY to Meg btw for the 'multiple games' tip.

[ sda ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:17 AM

I'm going to Camden Yards for the first time at the end of May. Anyone have any suggestions for good places for Sox fans to go? I'm staying within walking distance to the park. Congrats to Meg. Does anyone find themselves counting backward from 30? Last week I was on the Mets site getting spring training tickets for the Sox visit; they refreshed every 15 seconds-at least the screen blinked a little more frequently.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:20 AM

... so... cold...

DAMN YOU MAINTENANCE PEOPLE (who probably haven't shown up because they're waiting online for sox tickets)! AND DAMN YOU LANDLORD FOR APOLOGIZING AND BEING ALL NICE TO ME ABOUT IT!

Think about it this way-- if I die, there are two more computers out of queue improving your chances to get tickets by just that much.

You're welcome.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:22 AM

sda - as i said, theres about 30k sox fans there for the games, especally that series, which from what my rep told me the general public tickets available now are almost sold out. you can go most anywhere and find sox fans. The places that are packed are all the bars between inner harbor and the stadium on pratt, and the stuff across the street from the stadium. Oh, one nice thing about camden, you can take outside food and drinks in! saves some money that way too!

[ sda ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:34 AM

Thanks for the info, James. Sounds like I can't miss. I'm staying on Pratt.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:40 AM

sda - where are you staying? no you really cant miss at all down there.

*singing* I love the VWR, really! i see they updated availability and all indians series is sold out now in sept. odd, i thought those tickets were allready on sale about 3 weeks ago?

[ Katie ] says:

YAY I got some!

[ fc ] says:

Hot Damn! Got in, nice seats near Sox dugout & my 1st base boy.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:49 AM

lots of people seem to be getting in now, maybe i'll have luck in the next hour or 2. availablity still pretty good then i assume?

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:52 AM

here's hoping, james... i'll root for you if you root for me.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:57 AM

I'm rooting for you! maybe we'll get lucky!

[ sda ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:57 AM

James -oops- it's not Pratt; it's the corner of Lombard and Howard at the Holiday Inn. I hope it's clean. I don't want to have to sleep with one eye open.

[ jettagirl ] says:
on January 26, 2008 11:58 AM

There are people over at SG getting in, too...so I guess that there's hope. :)

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:06 PM

James, where are you sending mojo from this afternoon?

[ jenny again ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:06 PM

65 minutes until i need to leave for work ...

am i an absolute idiot for hoping to land two seats together anywhere in the park for two different games?

:: dons red parade sweatshirt for luck ::

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:06 PM

sda - yea cant tell you much about that one, its close to the stadiums and inner harbor, i think i stayed fairly close to it once, not the greatest neighborhood, but anything off inner harbor itself isnt the greatest, and with all the sox fans there will be packs of them everywhere i wouldnt worry too much.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:09 PM

I'm in PA, near Hershey (and all that chocolate!) yourself?

jenny- it still seems like there is decent availability for alot of the "less" popular games from what i'm seeing on here and on the sox site itself.

[ jenny again ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:09 PM

i'm also supposed to be eating lunch, but my stomach is too filled with hopeful butterflies! I CANNOT EAT FOR WANT OF RED SOX TICKETS.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:17 PM

Boston. Oh Boston. And Boston proper, not Brookline or Cambridge or whatever. I'm in the South End (not Southie, the South End--different).

Also--my heat still isn't on. Though at this time of day the sun is in my apartment so it isn't as bad as this morning.

Actually, this might be a good opportunity to mention I'm thinking about organizing a Centerfield party some weekend when people will be in town for a game-- would anyone be interested? No set ideas on what this would entail yet, but just trying to gauge interest.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:17 PM

Jenny - hey i just looked at your link i see you are going to 3 games allready *edit* oh now i see they are in minn. not quite the same, still nice though! Have fun!

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:25 PM

Wow nice, i fell in love with boston when i visted it a few years ago, i would love to move there. Still no heat? well you are right all the repair people are sitting in the VWR of Doom too!

[ jenny again ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:25 PM

james - are you telling me not to be greedy? ;D

i AM really lucky, though. i have a good single ticket to the sox/jays game on 4/30 and tickets to three sox/twins games in minnesota ... i also intend to be at the sox/o's in baltimore in august 8/18-8/20 AND in toronto for the sox/jays 4/4-4/6. fenway has it's own magic, though, and my little brother has never been. ::all crossables still crossed::

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:30 PM

REPAIRMAN HAS ARRIVED. Best quote so far, "yeah, well, it sure is cold outside today."

oh really. thanks.

I'm losing morale with the VWR thing.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:32 PM

Jenny - not at all. i got some sox pax so i have no room to talk about anyone else being greedy! I'll be at most of the games in balt and the whole series in philly too i'm sure. havent actually decided when i am going to go up to boston this year yet though

[ jettagirl ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:33 PM

I feel the same way. I love seeing games in other cities (even when the Sox aren't playing) and when traveling for work, I usually try to look to go to a game in whatever city I am in if for an extended period but I am still partial to Fenway.

Wouldn't you know, though, my in-laws who are life long Cards fans will be in town the weekend of the 1st Yanks series. My brother-in-law has not yet asked yet about the probability of seeing a game yet (I know it's coming). He doesn't understand the difficulty in getting tix without using an agency/scalper since its so easy to get tix in the midwest for other teams.

Still waiting....*sigh*...

[ sarah ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:34 PM

12 windows and I've got NOTHIN. VWR is awful. 3 1/2 hours.

[ jenny again ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:42 PM

work is rapidly creeping up on me ... my saturday morning has never gone by so fast with so little to show for it!

you guys are the best saturday morning support group ever, though. ;D

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:43 PM

I GOT IN!!!!!!!

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:46 PM

Weekend games (I checked 3) are SROs only, but for thurs aug 14th i got 4 in right field box BB, and wends aug 13th GS 26 4 seats, and was offered loge box seats both times, but they were row AA with the walkway advisory, didnt want to spend 90 bucks a ticket for that. Both games are against the rangers.

[ fc ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:46 PM

Margaret - Centerfield party sounds cool. I don't have any weekend games but I can make the long trip across the river any time. And what's with the Boston snobbery? ;) I'm proud to be a Somerville girl.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:47 PM

James too now?

God, I hate my life. How discouraging.

[ fc ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:49 PM

James - those walkway seats are exactly what I got for 8/12 - 13 - hope I don't regret it.

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:50 PM

Marg - i'm throwing ya good vibes still! i got pretty decent seats so the midweek games seem to have good availability still, dont give up hope!

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 12:57 PM

fc - oh wow, i could have sat right next to you! or if you just got them you got the ones i released. i dont know how bad it is, but i just wasnt willing to risk it, i've been in GS 26 before and thats a good view so i'm happy.

[ jenny again ] says:
on January 26, 2008 1:04 PM

ok, i give up. ;D stubhub, here i come (after i wait a few days for all the people who DID land tickets this morning to post them for scalping).

GOOD TIMES.

off to work ... good luck to the rest of you!

[ Meg ] says:
on January 26, 2008 1:08 PM

Yay! I'm happy others are getting in! And Margaret- I would definitely be interested in some type of party thing! I'm always in the Boston, so keep us posted if there is interest...

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 1:17 PM

Midweek tickets are my angle since I work just a few blocks away.

OH SO GREAT NEWS. The furnace needs a part. Calling every plumber in Boston as we speak to see if they have it.

Plus when you work at a hospital, clinical background or no, everyone wants to tell you their medical problems, like the repairman just now, god bless his heart.

And still no tickets.

Thanks for all the mojo being sent over. Optimism flagging...

[ sda ] says:
on January 26, 2008 1:41 PM

Those seats in Row AA are tough, especially in the areas behind home plate and halfway up the baselines. I was in Row DD behind home for one game and I was just barely high enough to see over the foot traffic which is nonstop. Look at it this way, fc, at least you're in the park!

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 1:42 PM

i hope everything works out for you and you get heat! If all else fails you can usually get midweek games off stubhub or ebay close to at cost close to the game, thats what i did last year, got a pair off ebay for below cost and saw papi hit a walkoff!

[ jettagirl ] says:
on January 26, 2008 1:46 PM

midweek - midafternoon....the game I am shooting for is still open so maybe before the end of the day, I will actually get in.

Was at the hospital last week with my Dad and was reading parts of his chart since his paperwork was just lying there out in the open. My Mom was all panicked that I was going to get yelled at by one of the nurses. I told her that I have access to charts and learn enough about people that I don't know (work in clinical research) that why shouldn't I learn something about someone whose history ACTUALLY impacts me.

[ sda ] says:
on January 26, 2008 1:54 PM

james-was that walkoff against Tampa Bay in September? I was there cheering along with you. By the way, how is Section 44 at Camden Yards? It looked decent on the seating chart. I just hope I'm not too far back. Row VV sounds waaaaaaay back.

[ Bill ] says:
on January 26, 2008 2:02 PM

5 Hours and nothing yet-----

If Dante were writing today Im sure that the VWR would be in one of the lower circles

[ James ] says:
on January 26, 2008 2:03 PM

sda - yes it was the one in sept against tampa! Cool! Section 44 is nice, the rows start at AAA-CCC then AA-ZZ so you're about 20 rows back which isnt too bad at all, and pretty close to the on deck circle or the edge of the sox dugout based on what i remember w\o checking the seating chart. You should have a great view! i'm behind you in 45 actually for the games i'll have my season tickets to use.

[ Anonymous ] says:
on January 26, 2008 2:08 PM

Margaret - feeling for you here. The same thing happened with my furnace in bitter cold after one of those 'storms of the century' a few years ago.

As for the walkway seats - in my experience Sox fans are there to see the game and traffic is mostly between innings so my guess is they'll be fine. That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

[ fc ] says:

[ Margaret ] says:

Hey, I've given up and started trolling stubhub (though the VWR is still running).

A reminder for all of you--if you're going to stubhub or elsewhere, the market is flooded right now--these will be the best prices you'll be able to find. Yes, it will be expensive, but not to wait anymore was worth it for me. PLUS--I got more than 8 and i console myself re: the price by thinking about how I don't need airfare to see my boys play.

And truth be told, I can afford it more than other people might, so letting other people have the cheaper tickets gives me good karma. I think. Maybe.

PLUS the man is here to fix my furnace! Please pray for his success. I think my big luck today was not getting the tickets---instead I found a plumber with the right part. I feel like kissing him right now I'm so relieved.

[ Kim ] says:

[ James ] says:

TG - OMG I truly feel for you there. that has to be the worst story i've read all day.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 4:36 PM

I'm going to Quincy (pronounced KWIN-ZEE) for a supahbowl pahty.

You can be assured there will be some serious Pats fans ridiculousness going on there. We will behave in ways that the rest of the country would probably find insufferable. I will likely find multiple opportunities to slander the good names of Giants players after washing away my sense of sportsmanship.

And beer. And tons of food.

You know, I know people don't like the Pats at this point, and I regret that, but how awesome is the Endzone Militia? It's a crew of history nerd middle aged men who tailgate before the game, dress up in 1700s garb and fire a barrage of muskets and wave antiquated flags when a TD is scored. How awesome is THAT?

(Apparently no one told Randy Moss about the 21-ish gun salute when he first arrived and they scared the shit out of him when he got his first TD. Would have loved to see that.)

But seriously, though my heart is with the Patriots, I have be super impressed with the Giants this season and I think I'd rather lose to them than anyone else. I really like them and it should be a great game.

Go Pats!

I found 8 bleacher tickets together in L35. Forgot the exact row, but I remember it was less than 10. It is a weekday game in April against the Angels, but at least I can bring a bunch of friends and make it a party!

TG that totally sucks!

I'm sending DH out for Red Sox ice cream to console me.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 4:50 PM

You know, if I lived in Boston -- or anywhere on the eastern seaboard within a train ride's distance, life would be so much easier when it comes to tickets. I could make it work to go to any game. But I'm stuck only trying to get weekend tickets, so I could fly in for games. And darn it, those weekend games always sell out!

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 4:53 PM

Another Margaret (great name btw! :) - I'm not sure why it's not working for you. It's a standard "mailto:" link, that should pull up your default mail program and fill in the email address for you. It's nothing fancy - no funny coding or anything.

If you don't have a mail program configured for your browser (I don't- I use gmail), you can just right hover over the contact button and see the email address in your navigation bar at the bottom of the window -- or you should be able to right click on it and copy the email address.

[ Margaret ] says:
on January 26, 2008 4:59 PM

Yes. I lost feeling in my fingers several hours ago, so typing since then has been difficult. We can only pray for my recently repotted houseplants that they can recover.

I don't know the temperature inside... all I know is that it is rising.

Any rumor that I offered sexual favors to the surprisingly cute furnace guy in gratitude are completely unfounded, I swear.

PS--Another Margaret, clearly your parents have excellent sensibilities.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:02 PM

Yay for heat!

You know, shouldn't it theoretically be WARMER here in Chicago than in New England, instead of COLDER? I mean, N.E. is famous for the crappy winter weather, why is it that I'm forced to endure colder temps here in Chicago? (asks the girl from Texas, for whom 50 degrees is cold)

[ gretchen0720 ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:12 PM

it's crappy here too, rainy drizzly and raw. Got some texts from friends at Wakefields golf tourney that the weather on the greens suuuuuck In Orlando, when the temp hits 60, people pull the parkas out.

on January 26, 2008 5:17 PM

Wow, that's a lot of comments! I spent the day at a bat mitzvah and then sleeping... sounds like you guys were having as much fun as I was. :P

Hm, has anyone done the NL thing yet?

1. Who will win the NLCS?
I'm pulling for the Rockies again. :) As for which team has the best chances, well, I'd probably say the Rockies. Or, if the Mets get Santana, they'll definitely be in it.

2. NL East?
Mets+Santana=yes, but Mets-Santana=Phillies, because Santana=winning. (This is my brain after math midterms.)

3. Cy Young?
Haren! I want him to, anyway.

4. Worst record?
Pittsburgh. Sometimes I forget they exist and I'm like, "Pirates? Wait, where are they from again?" xD

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:20 PM

People from the South are wusses in cold weather... but people from the North are just as wussy about hot weather. I laugh when people up here bitch about it being 90 degrees. It's 90 degrees in Texas... in NOVEMBER.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:22 PM

The Pirates - the Royals of the NL!

As a Phillies girl, I applaud your choice on #2, Liza.

Also, I'm thinking it might be the Dbacks this year- or the Pads. But if the Mets get Santana...

[ Meg ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:30 PM

I can totally attest to the Northern people thing...when I first moved to FL, in the middle of July, I seriously didn't go outside for like two months during the daytime (save for walking out to the pool and back). It was torture! I eventually got used to it, and now I really wish I could wear flip-flops all year round in Boston!

Is it typically really humid at all in Texas? That was something I never liked about FL...95 w/ 95% humidity is quite miserable...dry heat probably wouldn't be as bad though.

[ Bill ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:32 PM

Im officially at 8 1/2 hours and still nothing with 20 windows open...

For grins I stopped by the Orioles site and got tix for the 3 game set in August ....which took all of ten minutes

That'll be my first trip down to Camden.
Anyone know a good place to stay?

[ Ellen ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:33 PM

True on the northern/heat thing. I'm a heat wuss.

Still waiting...

[ gretchen0720 ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:36 PM

I hibernate in the summer...unless there is a/c I barely venture out, and I've got baseball to watch :)

They say that the longer you live here, your blood thins out, and you can tolerate the heat...eh, whatever, give me the cold.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:37 PM

Meg - I rebel against the cold weather in Chicago by wearing flipflops. I wear flipflops until Dec 1st.

And I grew up outside of Houston, on the Gulf Coast - so, yes, 95-100% humidity every single day. That's what makes it so unbearable - the feeling of a wet wool blanket pressing down on your skin the moment you step outside your door.

Bill - Me either. Still have 17 windows open (my lucky number- although not so lucky today), still no tickets. So you're not alone!

Camden was a blast. I stayed at a hotel right next to Camden, which turned out to be fabulous because a lot of great bars are within a quick cab ride away as well.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:40 PM

See - I'd MUCH rather have hot weather. I can't stand slogging through snow and slush. I don't like having to wear 18 layers of clothes. I still don't know how to drape a scarf properly. I refuse to wear headgear to stay warm. I'm a total failure at adapting to the cold temps.

However, the blessing (and curse) of living up North is that you get four real seasons. In Texas, it was either Summer (ungodly hot) or "Winter" (slightly chilly, lasts for 2 months).

[ jules ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:43 PM

I got a couple tickets for the A's/Sox game in Oakland (April 2), but the A's site has crashed. augh.

I'm so annoyed that they would have the servers to handle this!

What is even more frustrating is that I got in at 9am (when the A's started selling) and the best available was the second level. Next year, I'm getting the whole "Big Game" pack and selling what I don't need. I'll even go to an A's/Yankees game to cheer against the Yankees ;-)

[ fc ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:44 PM

Wow, laundry done, groceries bought, and you guys are still hear - discussing the weather!

I love the change of seasons, it makes me feel like I'm getting somewhere.

TG, scarf around face, over mouth, nose & ears = warmth w/o Hat Hair.

[ fc ] says:
on January 26, 2008 5:46 PM

My brain has melted - or maybe, frozen.

[ Liza ] says:
on January 26, 2008 6:04 PM

Speaking of Texas weather, I'm going to a Bar Mitzvah in early March in Houston. What kind of weather should I be expecting?

(I kind of wish it was before Spring Training started... now I won't have a chance of running into Josh.)

[ Rachel O ] says:
on January 26, 2008 6:11 PM

Sorry this has nothing to with the weather, but does anyone know where I might find the info on when other teams single-game tickets go on sale? I've been all over mlb.com and I can't find it anywhere! Maybe I really am that blonde haha
Thanks for any help

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 6:11 PM

My parents live about 2 minutes away from where Josh's folks live in Houston, and I've never run into him any of the times I've been home. I have a Sox shirt with Beckett on the back, and I never wear it when I'm in Houston because I'm (stupidly) paranoid one of his friends or family would notice.

Weather in early March will be warm - I'd bring short sleeves. At the most, very lightweight long sleeves. No jackets necessary - though it will likely rain a ton.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 6:13 PM

Rachel - I don't think there's one page where you can go to get that information on mlb.com -- I think you just visit the pages of the teams you're interested in and go to their ticket pages to find out more.

[ Liza ] says:
on January 26, 2008 6:16 PM

Short sleeves? Sounds good. I'm actually going to a Bat Mitzvah party in 15 minutes and still am puzzled by the fact that all of my nice clothes are fit for April-September and not the 30°F that's common the other half of the year here...

[ starr4 ] says:
on January 26, 2008 6:23 PM

I haven't tried the VWR (aka hell) today but checked for availability online this afternoon and there's not much that wasn't already on sale in Dec...or close to it. Meaning, there are tickets for April, May, and very early June. No other months are posted.

Thank goodness others go to the games as singles. I've done that a bunch. You can usually score tickets or even walk up to the box office for a single seat. I'm contemplating a Beckett home games attendance goal for myself. Once the rotation is set, I'll set the plan.

NL comments: grew up near Philly so the Phillies are the family teams to root for. There's a soft spot for the Phils in my heart. Pirates were surprising good last year.

Good luck to those waiting it out in virtual purgatory.

[ Rachel O ] says:
on January 26, 2008 6:25 PM

I've tried that as well but they just say the the seating and season ticket pices. Oh well. I guess there's not much of a demand for Dbacks tickets anyway unfortunately.

That's why I marvel at the chaos that is the first day of Sox tickets going on sale! You guys are amazing to sit through that! I can't picture anyone here going to such great lengths to get tickets.

But thanks for your help!

[ starr4 ] says:
on January 26, 2008 6:28 PM

Oh, one more sign that spring is nigh: I received two of my three sets of tickets from the Red Sox yesterday!!! It made my day.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on January 26, 2008 6:33 PM

Rachel - the best method to make sure you know all about tickets sales: sign up for the Dbacks Ticket email list. If you have an account on mlb.com, go to your account page and go to "Newsletter Preferences". You can add email subscriptions to a whole bunch of choices for every team.

[ fc ] says:
on January 26, 2008 6:39 PM

Starr, I got tickets for late June & August - looks like the whole season is available except opening day, Yankees games, and games already sold out.

[ Rachel O ] says:

It has been 10 hours now. I am giving up. Stub Hub it is.

Yeah- me, too. It's time to give up for the evening, and head to the bars to watch some college basketball. Good luck to the rest of you who are trying tonight. I'll be back trying again tomorrow morning... or tonight, I may do some drunk waiting.

Gave up 10 minutes ago. The game I wanted was updated to limited/SRO at 8 pm. I may try the park itself in the coming weeks and if not, will resort to some other source. Too bad that Sox are playing the Brewers in Boston, otherwise, I would have been golden for at least 1 series.

Five windows finally opened up for me in the space of a half hour.

Not all of them got me the best seats but I did get 16 games spread pretty evenly around the schedule

Now that its over and I scored it doesnt seem that bad at all--It only took 11 hours.
Im a Red Sox fan--Im experienced at waiting a while for good things.

When it happens its all worth it!

RE: why it is colder in Chicago-- you guys have the Lakes and above that the tundra.

We have the Gulf Stream right offshore, which makes for both insane weather and slightly warmer temperatures.

HOWEVER.

We have two other factors: wind and humidity. Boston is the windiest city in the country (Chicago only thinks it is, but the adage is referring to politics, actually), with accompanying wind chill. And humidity makes cold colder and heat hotter.

Seriously though? I was in DC once during a heat wave and nearly DIED. Why ANYONE would live in that kind of heat is COMPLETELY beyond me.

This is why I cheerfully went to college in Rochester NY.

That being said, I also lived in London during that big lethal heat wave in 2003 and I survived 120 degree subway rides. It was beyond complaining. I just couldn't breathe.

Well, I just got home from work, and my dad says they had all the computers running for tickets, but I'm not totally sure I believe them. I know I'm the only one in the family who has the dedication to sit at the computer all day and wait for tickets. I hate being the only one who cares.

[ Ian ] says:

I wasn't fortunate enough to get any tickets either. But there's still hope with the random drawings coming up. I know I'm guaranteed at least 2 tickets to a game through RSN membership that I got for Christmas.

i know i said i gave up earlier ... but i came back to try again after work here ... and I GOT IN AGAIN and managed to hem and haw about what to do for JUST LONG ENOUGH that the system booted my out and i still have no tickets.

awesome.

;D

LET'S GO RED SOX.

oh hey! it just let me in again! and this is what it says: "The ticketing system is currently unavailable. Please try again later." AWESOME! ;D does it go to sleep at night? is it trying to tell me to go to sleep too?

ok, wait, no, one last addendum. apparently no one else wants to go see the (former devil) rays at fenway on 6.4.08 because I ACTUALLY GOT 2 SEATS TOGETHER! in the right field box seats! WHOOOO HOOOOOO! now i just have to convince my roommate that she wants to go to this wednesday night game instead of the sunday afternoon games we were originally considering. ;D

i have to work tomorrow morning. i should be sleeping. I AM TOO EXCITED FOR SLEEPING!

Update: I called for tickets this AM and there's decent availability for June, July and August games that were put on sale yesterday (my computer is rebelling against the VWR).

Most of the available tickets via phone are in the 90 and 50 dollar categories.

[ Kara ] says:

I got trough around 11pm last night and all I could get was standing room. I'd be perfectly happy to watch a game standing, but sadly, my ride into Boston/the people paying for the tickets don't really go for that.

[ Liza ] says:
on January 27, 2008 10:25 AM

I'm gonna be lame and be comment #200?

But I'm actually happy I didn't have to be in the VWR--it turns out I know some people who know some people who have season tickets. o.o And I'm going to a Sept. game against Toronto, so that might be interesting...

[ starr4 ] says:

Kara, that's too bad. Usually with SRO, you can get a seat cause, as unbelievable as this sounds, not everyone with a ticket shows up at the actual game.

i got tickets the dbacks game on 6/24...i can now sleep happily

to answer Meg's question of
"Is it typically really humid at all in Texas?"

it is entirely dependent upon what part of Texas you reside in. Anywhere near the coast is most definitely humid. The further north you go as well as further west you go in Texas...the humidity is less. The Panhandle of Texas is extremely DRY. I live in Austin but grew up 100 miles east of Houston right on the bayous of louisiana...where the humidity is HORRIBLE. Austin isn't as bad as my hometown but my friends in Amarillo area(the panhandle area) think Austin is horrible humidity.

So it's all subjective. I usually go to Boston in July...and I can tell you the humidity there ican be JUST as bad at times in my hometown in Texas.

My hat is off to you super Red Sox fans. I had no idea of the pain & misery involved with the ticket buying. I got tickets to see the Orioles/Red Sox at Camden Yards on May 13th and August 18th through the Orioles web site today. It's not Fenway but living in Northern Virginia, I'll take it anyway I can get it!
