Alex Makes Me Angry

Alex Cora turned himself into authorities in Martin County, Florida yesterday for violating the terms of his probation relating to a DUI charge from 1999. Back then, Alex played for the Dodgers and was living in Vero Beach for spring training when he was pulled over for speeding near Baker Road and U.S. 1 in Jensen Beach. Deputies arrested him and charged him with DUI after they said he smelled of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests. Alex pleaded no contest to the charges and was sentenced to probation. According to court records, he later failed to appear in court on a probation violation connected to the case.

According to the Herald, and "a source close to Cora", Alex "believed that the matter had been fully resolved no later than 2000. In the process of completing a legal transaction in Florida earlier this week, Cora's name popped up on a computer, and he discovered that it was not settled. Cora reported to the jail, posted a $20,000 bond and was immediately released. The source said the infielder expects the issue to be cleared up by next week."

There are few things that anger me more than someone who drives drunk. I'm hoping this incident was the last time Alex ever does something like that. Ever.

I always stick up for Cora because he seems like such a great guy and doesn't get the attention that he deserves, so I am not pleased with this turn of events.

1999 was a very long time ago, and I appreciate him acting responsibly about the whole thing now-- but I am still disappointed.

Like Margaret said, 1999 is a long time ago. I would be angry (or sad) if he was a repeat offender. That's where I thought this story was leading. Luckily, it wasn't. Not a great move in 1999 but it looks (I hope) that he learned his lesson.

First off, that mugshot is like super serious and kinda scares me. Second off, I was disappointed when I first heard this. I have very little tolerance for drunk drivers. However, this was 9 years ago when he was young and stupid. If I hear of him pulling this ish again, then all bets are off and he's disowned.

Right now, I'm slightly amused. Slightly. Mostly due to the whole turning himself in right after finding out. I dunno, I mean it IS the right thing to do, it just comes across as kinda dorky.

Anyways, he's, to borrow a phrase from Stephen Colbert, "ON NOTICE" right now.

ON NOTICE

That's perfect for this situation.

But you know who is also ON NOTICE? The justice system. A man is in major league baseball and wins the World Series when he has an outstanding DUI-related warrant on his record? Wow, guys. I know the offense wasn't significant---but come on.

Also--It is important to point out that he did plead no contest to the DUI--the arrest is for failure to show up at a subsequent hearing. If he hadn't responded properly to a DUI charge... THEN there would be some serious issues.

Yeah, I agree;1999 was a long time ago, and Cora hasn't done anything like that since--that we know of, anyway--so I don't really blame him. Of course it annoys me that he would do something like that, but I can forgive him pretty easily. If it was in, say, 2006, I'd be really mad, but it was almost 10 years ago.
