This live Brett Favre press conference is making me tear up.

Awwww - Juan Pierre! He used to be a Cubbie. But I don't miss his stat line, that's for sure.

Sean! Great play, but... don't hurt yourself.

[ Texas Gal ] says:

Stop calling Dustin Pedroia "scrappy". Stop calling him "little". STOP.

SOOOOOOo jealous! I wish I could watch the game!!! Was dying to see Joe Torre in a Dodgers uniform!

[ Texas Gal ] says:

It's all very weird.

And Peter Gammons is reporting from the dugout.

And Sean Casey just scored a run!

DUSTIN PEDROIA! WHOOOOOT. nice two-out hit, smug little bastard.

jacoby smoked that ball and mighty mouse did as well

[ Ian ] says:

I could do without Steve Phillips talking.

It's just like the old days of WSBK 38 with Sean McDonough. All he needs is RemDawg.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 12:48 PM

Dougie "running" around the bases (and I use that term loosely) is hilarious to watch.

I have to say - Torre looks awful comfortable in Dodger blue.

you guys don't make me go to work. D: D: D:

want to stay home and WATCH BASEBALLLLLL.

Is anyone else getting weird sound glitches from ESPN or is it just my TV?

[ Texas Gal ] says:

Nope - not just you. It's been skipping and stuttering all game.

[ Abby ] says:

Casey just had a nice RBI double that looked like it missed being a homer by a couple feet.

[ Abby ] says:
on March 6, 2008 1:11 PM

I was hoping they'd talk about the most famous ride from Logan to Fenway and show some footage. Ridiculous? Yes. But still funny.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 1:11 PM

I like being up 5-0. Sean Casey is having one helluva day.

[ starr4 ] says:
on March 6, 2008 1:17 PM

I've DVR'd the game! It's reading like I have lots to look forward to. Can't wait.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 1:18 PM

Abby - I have video of that famous ride, from a piece NESN did on Red Sox Report. I promise to post it someday soon - that story never gets old.

[ Renee ] says:

Just got back from school, I didn't even know their was a game on! This made my day happy. :)

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 1:32 PM

This is my first chance to see Aardsma pitch. And I'm kind of excited about it.

[ Abby ] says:
on March 6, 2008 1:41 PM

How did Aardsma do? I had to take a phone call and couldn't watch his inning.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 1:44 PM

He did fine - they got a couple of hits off of him, but no runs (and no walks). Looks pretty solid.

[ jules ] says:
on March 6, 2008 1:46 PM

On ESPN?

:: kicking myself for *not* working at home today ::

[ Avery ] says:
on March 6, 2008 1:47 PM

Just got home from school, but my godfather texted me saying that Sean was having a good game. YES :)
He's been one of my favorite players in all of baseball for so long.

[ Meg ] says:
on March 6, 2008 1:49 PM

Just got out of a meeting...I didn't think it would be appropriate to watch during it:-P I miss anything good that can't be figured out from the box score?

[ Abby ] says:
on March 6, 2008 2:02 PM

Bryan Corey looks terrible!

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 2:03 PM

You missed Sean Casey tumbling ass-over-teakettle while catching a ball for a DP. :)

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 2:05 PM

OK- that? WAS AWESOME.

Bobby Kielty making faces at the camera behind Jacoby while he talks... GREATNESS.

[ Abby ] says:
on March 6, 2008 2:06 PM

It was adorable! His hair's out of control.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 2:07 PM

I'm going to put video up of that pronto.

[ Meg an ] says:
on March 6, 2008 2:11 PM

Hehe...I saw some of them! I'm on MLBTV using my school's wireless so it's really choppy but still funny. It froze on a few of them:-P

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 2:55 PM

JEEEEEEZUS. Hunter Jones is getting SHELLACKED. He looks horrible.

[ Meg ] says:
on March 6, 2008 2:55 PM

Boo. That sucks.

[ Ian ] says:
on March 6, 2008 2:56 PM

Ok. I don't like Sean McDonough anymore after the comment of one swing of the bat will tie this game up.

And then of course, Hunter Jones serves up a meatball fora 3-run homer to tie the game up.

[ Meg ] says:
on March 6, 2008 2:58 PM

What the hell was that thow?

[ Signal to Noise ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:04 PM

Glad to see Aardsma do well -- went to high school with him, was, probably still is a nice guy.

Plus, the previous pitcher from our high school to make it big was Brad Lidge. Gotta make up for that a little.

[ Ian ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:04 PM

Extra Bases has some good scoop.

Papelbon didn't get what he wanted for pay at $900,000. He ended up getting $775,000.

and fu*k, grand salami

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:05 PM

Well. That was... shitty.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:06 PM

S2N - OK, now you have to share gossip or stories on Aardsma.

Also... I still love Lidge. Even though it's painful to do so.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:09 PM

$775,000 ??? WOW. That's way more than I thought he'd ever get - and just shows how much the organization loves him. Because that's way way WAY more than any relief pitcher with just 2 years has ever gotten.

[ Ian ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:13 PM

The Rockies gave Manny Corpas more than that with less service time. He had about a year and a half of service time. He got a 4-year $8,025,000 contract that is worth up to $22.5 million.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:14 PM

I wasn't talking about a multi-year contract, though. That's a whole other ballgame.

I was operating on the assumption they gave him a one-year deal at 775K.

[ Ian ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:19 PM

True. but they bought out all of his arbitration years avoiding a situation like Papelbon's.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:22 PM

If the Sox gave Papelbon a four year deal at 8 million, I would totally support that. That seems totally normal and in line with the market and MLB contracts in general. I'd think he'd be a steal at that amount, over 4 years.

A one-year deal at $775,000 is what seems odd to me. Very high for a cost-controlled, pre-arbitration, one year deal.

Maybe it WILL turn out to be multi-year. I know I'd breathe easier.

[ Ian ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:22 PM

Oh btw Texy, you'd be proud of me today. I'm wearing my burnt orange Texas Longhorns shirt.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:23 PM

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Longhorn Love!

[ Ian ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:25 PM

My understanding on signing Paps to a long-term deal was that the Red Sox and him were FAR apart. Maybe over the course of time, they will get a deal done. There's nothing to sweat about though, he's still under the red sox control through the 2011 season. He hits free agency in 2012.

Come on Diaz- win it right here.

[ Ian ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:28 PM

Or be the statue of liberty and watch it go by for a called strike three.

Its moss time now.

[ Ian ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:29 PM

Oh well, good game by the regulars. Bad game by the baby sox pitchers.

strange not seeing Torre in pinstripes.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:38 PM

Yep - the baby Sox pitchers got ass-whupped. We had some good hitting and great pitching by the big boys.

[ Lyndsay ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:49 PM

gaddammit I always miss the games that Jacoby plays in - how'd my baby do?

why are they being aired during normal work hours? why??? NESN needs to reair these at night.

[ Ian ] says:
on March 6, 2008 3:57 PM

Jacoby was 1-for4 with a double and a great diving catch.

It's spring training that's why the games are mostly daytime. ESPN had the broadcast today.

[ starr4 ] says:
on March 6, 2008 7:16 PM

Well, I'm reading Roger Angell's Late Innings, a well-written book on baseball charting the game from 1977-82. He examines, among other issues, the early days of free agency, and the rocky introduction of women sportswriters, which I personally found infuriating. As I read how little players made then and the fuss that led to the Mets dumping Tom Seaver, mostly cause he demanded more money, as was his due as the best pitcher of the era, I can't help but marvel at the salaries today's players are getting, demanding, thinking they deserve.

As I titter on the brink of gettin' political, I'll stop and politely suggest we recall that it wasn't all that long ago that a 775K salary was considered an insane salary to pay a ball player.

[ Lyndsay ] says:
on March 6, 2008 10:11 PM

so with Jacoby making diving catches and Coco actually making contact with the ball...this little competition's getting interesting, folks.
