All Sitting And No Pitching Makes Josh A Dull Boy

Josh Beckett threw today in Ft. Myers for the first time since injuring his back last weekend and kicking off BeckettWatch (also known as the day every Sox fan across the land simultaneously felt like they'd been kicked in the stomach, because we are not a calm and laid-back lot).

Hooray for Josh's return to throwing, because I have to say that I really enjoy seeing this Josh:

A whole lot more than this Josh:

Josh threw 35 pitches off of flat ground (25 at 60 feet, and 10 at 75 feet)- and, crucially, felt no pain or discomfort. Coach Farrell says Josh will move back to 90 feet tomorrow, then on to long toss on Tuesday, more flat ground on Wednesday and then back to the mound on Thursday. That would seem to indicate he'd be staying in Florida, right Tito?

"He's not going to go with us to Japan," Francona said. "Again, I think, using common sense along the way ... but you try to do things in the correct order and everything like that. Talked to him this morning about it. He completely understands."
That puts to death any chance we had at wacky Josh in Japan stories involving sushi hijinks or the Texan-to-Japanese language barrier.

He does look a tad depressed in the lower photo, doesn't he?

It's a relief and a disappointment all at once, I guess. The big question now is when he'll make his season debut. Farrell seemed to think the Oakland series might be "too aggressive," so will he pitch in Toronto? Or will they hold him back for the home opener? (Ring ceremony and a Beckett start? Could be the most awesome day ever.)

It's kind of funny that he's been here three years and he still hasn't gotten the Opening Day nod. Better luck in 2009, Josh.

I do enjoying watching Beckett. I am a Papelbon fan first, Beckett second. I went to the Sox game on Friday. Unfortunately, it was rained out in the 7th inning. It was a good game. Weird though, since then I have had the song deep heart of Texas in my head since then.

I'm telling you, he's an adrenaline junkie. Throwing makes him happy.

Also, the Sox have just let up three runs to the Pirates so they're behind, 5-2. At least yesterday's batting practice against the Reds was fun! :)

Good to hear Josh is doing better. I'm sure he woulda not been happy to turn in his hunting gear to Japanese officials anyway

i was kind of looking forward to that! LOL

Well we still have Papelbon's hijinks to look forward to. Those should be fun to hear about.

actually, I really hope NESN does a piece on the adventures of Manny and his "Uncle Rico" (am I the ONLY person demanding a picture of this guy as proof that he's not hte guy from Napoleon Dynamite) unleashed on the city of Tokyo.

also...bets on which player is the first to ask where the massage parlor's at....

Lyndsay, Clay's calling ahead.

Things I'd like to see:
Pap trying to order at McDonald's.
Youk trying to eat with chopsticks.
Papi trying to fit...anywhere.

Josh looks really good in those photos....very slim. I kind of like the pensive and thoughtful Josh. There are some photos, and I'm sure you'll all agree, where he looks so frickin' amazing. I can't even accurately describe it.

I will say that he can pull off the pouty look, but it doesn't suit him as well as the focused, I'm-going-to-kill-you-with-my-fastball look. And I'm just dying to see him pitch! And he's not a happy boy since he's not pitching, makes me think he'll be even more determined to get out there and kick butt. It's a shame those in Japan will miss his mini-lectures on the benefits of deer meat. :)

thoughtful Josh is just thinking wistfully about how much he misses those tickle fights during photo day with Dougie. he's also thinking, should I call him? is it too early to call? or will he be upset with me for waiting?

I am watching the NY-Sox game on NESN at the moment...Jacoby just got to 1st, then Heath Phillips checked him and JE scurried back to the base, then Jason Giambi turned and said something to Ellsbury ,who smiled and said something back. and of course i am DYING to know what they said to eachother.

also, Brandon Moss looks pretty damn good in this game...although everyone looks good in the Florida sunshine of day games I guess...

[ Liza ] says:

Yeah... most of the guys looked really good today. Jacoby looked great--he reached base 3 out of his 4 plate appearances on two singles and a walk, plus he made some great catches, ranging all over the outfield. Carter and Moss were both 2-for-4. Youk had a very nice homer. Too bad Bartolo threw 41 pitches, gave up 4 runs, and got two whole outs. Everyone else looked good, though. (Minus the Tavy runs, too, I guess.)

oh, i meant LITERALLY looked good - but they played well too. nice work with Jacoby making the double-base steal. too bad they didnt get any extra bases from his efforts.

always amused by Remy and Orsillo, of course, and last night's topic which was "what the hell are we gonna do in Japan without American TV?" LOLOL...

I actually turned on the game in the 3rd, right as Derek Jeter was getting hit by one of Tavarez's pitches. I just had to shake my head. oh, Tav. is he being allowed to go to Japan, does anyone know? because if so, I am picturing the scene at Logan as he tries to get his brand-new samurai swords through security.

Pssh... like Tavarez needs a sword. His hands are weapons of death. If you're a dugout telephone.

Personally I'm hoping for Josh's comeback during the Toronto series, as I have officially scored tickets for 4/11. No hurry, Josh, take your time ... ;)

Trish: Lucky! If I could pick any game at all to go to that would be it. Oh, well, as long as I'm not sick this year...

the Buckholz no hitter was just being replayed on NESN...I love Remy in the 8th inning in that game: "I don't care what the Sox are doing right now. bring me the 9th!" that game still makes me excited. like NESN says, "it's why we watch". so true, NESN...so true.

ok we need a new post...I am starting to post unrelated items in here now. lots of new developments in Sox world - like the team possibly boycotting Japan? discuss...
