So Long! Farewell!

The forecast for chicken parm sales in the greater Boston area just took a nosedive... Doug Mirabelli was released by the Red Sox today.

It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating his return. Now all we're left with is the memories.

I did NOT see this coming. Although with the way Georgie and Dusty were hitting, maybe I should have. Still... shocking. Where's our inevitbale Wake interview?

Dougie!!! Noooooooo!!! ;_;

We'll miss you, Mirabelli! I hope it was less abrupt than it seemed to us on the outside.

Count me in as curious about how Wake (and Tek, too) are doing.

Yeah! I know that sounds bad, but watching him try to hit was enough to give any fan a heart attack. His batting average last year was .202, is it possible to be that low?
Some fans will miss him, but I am not one of them.

Who would've thought Doug Mirabelli would win two rings in Boston? Baseball's funny.

I'm very surprised about this, but I'm not sorry. I mean, he's still just a backup catcher, and watching him try to "hit" and "run" the past few years has been painful. So...thanks for the memories, Dougie, I guess?

i think dougie should walk in to the sunset happy that he could bat 200 and have two world series rings to show for it.thats an amazing thing in itself. the sox have cash and dusty brown both can catch the knuckleball. the sox did look for a backup for tek this off season but the sox didn't find anyone they liked .

[ Lyndsay ] says:

HUH?? wait...didnt they just sign him to another contract? I'm confused...

[ Liza ] says:

Aww. Dougie, we'll miss you!

Lyndsay: they did. But I guess they figure that between Cash, Brown, Kottaras, and even Mark Wagner, they have enough catching prospects to be well-stocked for at least one more year of Wakefield.

(Let's hope it's more than one year...)

my theory about wakefield is the sox will let him (as long as he's healthy and can eat up innings) pitch until he passes clemens on the all time wins in games category. then he'll retire. if i'm correct he may only need a season or two to do that.

Kotteras has been on FIRE. I hope they bring him up and give him a chance in the biggies at some point this season. and...he's pretty easy on the eyes, which is always a plus. MORE GEORGE!

Cash should not even be in the Majors. Mirabelli did a lot for this team.
Just another mistake by Theo. I guess he didn't learn his lesson the last time.

I was at that game that day they resigned him and flew him back...it was exciting. We'll see how Wakey does without his pacifier. I'll have to make some chicken parm as a tribute.

Bummed am I. =(

Cash hit .167 last year. It's not about offense, people. Doug was a character, and I'll miss him something terrible. Plus, he was the only Italian on the team (I miss you DiNardo!)

[ Lyndsay ] says:

now this kind of makes me sad...the way they just kind of fired him suddenly. I wonder if he got to say goodbye to everyone. no more tickle fights with Beckett I guess. :-(

on an unrelated note, I'm finding this trade rumor of Coco Crisp for some Mets outfielder to be strange - the last thing they need right now is another outfielder - don't they have like 7 or 8 "potential 4th" OFs at this point? - rumor has it that the Mirabelli release and Coco trade would allow them to get a better backup than Cash (who we all can agree is not a huge step up for them offensively).

Again, I said it once and I'll say it again...I think they should let that kid Kotteras have a shot, and see if he can bat better than .200.

are there any other knuckleball/"weird pitch" catchers on the market right now? come on, let's start some unfounded trade rumors. whos with me?

ok 3rd post on this: what's also kind of strange about this situation is that its looking more and more like Wakefield will start the first game in Japan (given the lack of other options at this point). seems like a strange situation to throw Cash in at the last minute. is he ready to start Wakefield in Japan?

I'll miss Dougie something fierce, but, in all honesty, I was confused as to why they signed him at all this off-season after Cash showed he could catch Wake (even though he, much like Dougie now, can't hit worth a lick). And while I'd love it if one of the kids got a shot, it makes way more sense for them developmentally to stay at AAA where they'll get more playing time. So, yeah.

I do wish they'd released him, oh, at almost any other time (I guess mid-game would be worse). I mean, he was already suited up for the game, you know?

I too will have to make some Chicken Parm in Dougie's honor...

I'll miss his character :(

someone inform me of the advantage gained by starting Cash and releasing Mirabelli when their stats are virtually identical? I know youth and money, for sure...anything else? I'm still confused.

Dougie'll be back He'll be back. Don't know how, but he'll be back.

Cash hit 111 last year. His five year hitting average is 216.

Cash is making 4oo thousand this year and Dougie made 150 thou because he was cut before the contract could be guaranteed.

When Doug is healhty he contributed. Cash is an automatic out.

The only stupid thing here is cutting Mirabelli for a guy that is going to get 1 hit at every 60 at bats.

I hope Tek wants to work all year and can adapt to hitting a kunckleball because Cash will be useless.

Look at how Coco was treated last year for not hitting. Ten fold that to our already dead hitting line up and Cash will be booed every five days because that is all he will play.

Last year we hit in spurts and we got lucky
