Buckner Plays On

In my ongoing quest to try and bring more people into the fold of college baseball (and, more specifically, Texas Longhorn baseball), I was tickled to find out that Bill Buckner's only son, Bobby Buckner, plays baseball at the University of Texas- my alma mater.

Bobby followed his father's lead to the infield -- but he's a middle utility infielder instead, and plays second and/or shortstop for the Horns. Bobby's bio makes mention of his Boston birth and his dad's major league background, but remains silent on The 1986 Incident. From an article about Bobby signing his letter of intent to play at UT:

"Obviously, Bobby comes from a baseball family," associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Tommy Harmon said. "His dad, Bill Buckner, was a long-time major leaguer. His uncle played, also. He's somewhat of a baseball field rat. He wants to be at the ballpark all of the time. He can play either second or short and he's a switch-hitter."

i watched texas play rice a couple weeks back, but didn't put it together that bobby was bill's son. that's kind of crazy.

also, i've decided to become a longhorns baseball fan based solely on the pitching performances of chance ruffin.

And! And! Chance Ruffin's dad, Bruce Ruffin, played on the 1983 National Champion Longhorn baseball team with Roger Clemens -- and also pitcher for 12 years in the majors.

Can someone explain the oh-so-divisive issue of the battling Texas schools?

You know, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech... even people I know who have lived in Texas for a year or two when they were really little have an alliance.

Who hates who? Why? How does the populace break down? What amusing stereotypes can be made about those who support these schools?

TG-- sorry to mention A&M... I know this is a sensitive issue between you and Josh, to say the least.

Texas = premier state university. located in the liberal city (and state capital) of Austin. fairly diverse student body. massively huge. stereotype is either hippie treehuggers or rich fratboys. considered one of the "public ivy" schools. great at football, basketball, baseball, swimming, golf, softball, track.

Texas A&M = second state university. located in the boonies. originally an all-male institution. corps. agricultural (farm kids) and mechanical (engineers). stereotype is prejudiced hick sheeplovers and/or faux military corps weirdos. also a top-notch research institution, but not as top-notch as Texas, so a bit of a complex over that. used to be great at football. getting better at baseball. periodically good at basketball.

Texas Tech = cowboy school, located in Lubbock- the dusty, flat panhandle. not near as rigorous academically as the other two. the region is generally pro-Texas, so a lot of students go here if they don't get in. (by contrast, the Houston area is generally pro-A&M) known for good looking girls. never dominant in any sport, but play the role of spoiler in football very often -- especially for A&M.

poor kid - I bet he gets heckled by other teams. Kind of like how when Darryl Strawberry's kid played basketball for U-Maryland, crowds used to yell stuff about his father at him.
