Gameday Open Thread: Yankees 4/12

vs. New York Yankees
3:55 pm
Fenway Park - Boston, MA
SP: Josh Beckett vs. Mike Mussina
tv/radio: FOX - MLB.TV - WRKO

Josh vs. Moose. I know Papelbon's the one who hunts moose, but I think Josh will be just as happy to see this particular Moose go down in defeat today.

Use the comments to this entry as your own personal Gameday open thread. These open threads have been fun so far - so I'll keep 'em up as long as y'all are interested in having them.

Did y'all miss me last night?

[ jules ] says:

Go Sox!

I was glad to see Casey have a good game yesterday.

And I agree with you, that was a HIT, dammit.

I'm worried about our pitching. Wang went 9 and our pen has been worked and not very successful. I hope Commander Kick Ass is ready to go.

Working from home, so I won't be (or *shouldn't*) be watching too much or posting too much. I also have to fight my beloved for the clicker (Masters).

:: goes to get the clicker ::

GO SOX!

Ian - where were ya?

The clouds have come back again, but there's still sun, so it still looks fine.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 3:36 PM

One of my best friends had his bachelor party last night.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 3:40 PM

Hi kids! I've missed y'all.
Hee hee - I said "y'all."

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 3:41 PM

Don't worry fc i use it all the time.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 3:50 PM

That Fox intro was pretty cool. Plus the get to know Papelbuns.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 3:51 PM

ECL checking in! I too will probably not be posting much, as I'm finally getting to watch the game on TV. My brand spankin' new Manny shirt was waiting in my mailbox 15 minutes ago when I returned from errands, so I'm now dressed for success.

FC, I don't believe we've met before, but I occasionally use a stray "y'all" myself, having lived in NC for 20 years now. :-)

Okay, off to watch the game. Will check back later...

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 3:51 PM

Yep, I enjoyed the Pap segment too.

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 3:55 PM

That Papelbuns bit was fun. I must have that book.

If I were Queen of the Universe™, I'd ban all drug commercials from TV during sporting events.

The Traitor is starting. Hope he chokes.

What's up with Beckett's warmup music being "rockstar" from Nickelback.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 3:59 PM

Joba's lineup was kind of hilarious. WHY does he have to be on the Yankees?

I love the irony of Demon flying out to Jacoby.

[ Liza ] says:

BecKett

[ starr4 ] says:

Hey Ian..missed you last night. Did you get the link I sent for the Sodfather article? Roger Bossard profile.

Sweet, Mr. Beckett. You can come into any tune you like.

[ fc ] says:

Woo, Tacoby!

[ Ian ] says:

I caught this earlier over at the Pro Jo. Jeff Beckett is starting today.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:10 PM

Nice screw-up by Mussina there.

C'mon, PAPI!

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:10 PM

I miss NO ONE when there are 2 sox on base and no outs.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:10 PM

I don't really drink Starr so I was a little caffeinated last night and couldn't sleep. Especially because of the hour drive home.

I just put that up here. I was like who the f is Jeff Beckett.

[ starr4 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:10 PM

Papi, please hit it out of the park and make that jerk, Joe Buck, eat his words.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:12 PM

I can deal with Joe Buck. It's Timmah McCarver I can do without.

[ starr4 ] says:

Tim McCarver--annoying the crap out of people for thirty years.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:16 PM

Frosted tip boy should get a nice rousing Fenway welcome again today

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:16 PM

These guys should just SHUT UP and let us listen to the atmosphere of the park. That'd be so much better.

[ fc ] says:

The Hawk! Bring on the hawk!

[ starr4 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:17 PM

OK, OK, someone tell me...was that music played there at the end of the inning Catherine Wheel? Random and marvelous.

[ ecl1958 ] says:

Hey Liza, I'm guilty of a SERIAL dual alliance. I jumped the fence from the Evil Empire last fall. :-)

[ Ian ] says:

[ Liza ] says:

Ecl - Well, then a very belated congratulations to you (and no offense to Trish and other Yankees fans)!

It's raining here now...

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:21 PM

ecl - how does a thing like that happen?

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:23 PM

Jorge "No DL for Me" Posada somehow is so sore he can't catch but can DH anyway... just puzzling.

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:24 PM

Missed Tek kicking dirt back to Posada.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:26 PM

Just back in the door from Maine.

WELCOME to kristina!
Welcome back to Ian!
And hello everyone!

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:26 PM

A few things for those who can't see the Red Sox on daily basis.

According to the Redsox.com schedule, the Red Sox are slated to be on ESPN monday (NESN for us who have it) and they will be ESPN2 wednesday night (NESN for us who have it).

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:27 PM

It was pretty funny Jules. I'm sure myself or Texy will get the video up later.

[ Trish ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:27 PM

Oh, dear God, Moose, will you PLEASE stop sucking?

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:27 PM

i found the dirt kicking incident highly amusing, they're really all just 10 year old boys aren't they

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:28 PM

WOW!! Look what i found in my glove.

[ Trish ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:28 PM

CANOOOOOOOOOOO

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:28 PM

Ian, LOL about A-Rod!

Thanks, Liza. And I agree with you about Posada. Very odd.

FC...chalk it up to a miracle? Actually, I never "hated" the Sox. That's not my style. So once the Yankees got bounced from the playoffs I continued to watch the ALCS because I couldn't get enough baseball. Between the heroic comeback, the great skills, and the amazing amount of sheer personality on the Sox (in stark contrast to the Stepford corporatism of the Yankees, and the fact that I had started finding most of them annoying), by the time the dust settled I had switched sides. And I didn't change my mind during the off season. I couldn't wait for things to start up again so I could watch this loveable bunch do their thing! So here I am.

[ Abby ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:28 PM

Hi guys, just checking in. Josh looks pretty good, and Arod looks ridiculous in those glasses.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:29 PM

Hi TG!

And hi Theo.

[ Abby ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:30 PM

Aww, Tek.

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:30 PM

TG, where in Maine were you? That's my favorite place in the world and would move there in a heartbeat. We might retire there. Seriously.

TEK! damn.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:30 PM

what the fuck was Tek thinking? Good thing i don't have anything close to throw

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:30 PM

Why send Tek to 2nd on that one?

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:31 PM

i'm thinking he went on his own fc

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:31 PM

[ ecl1958 ] says:

Ian, thanks for the heads up about Wednesday. I would have kicked myself if I had found out after the fact that the game was on TV here. Four times in one week -- woo hoo!

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:34 PM

Oh, Pedie...

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:34 PM

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:36 PM

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:36 PM

[ Liza ] says:

fc - It's also raining pretty hard here.

NICE play by the Mayor!

And a nice pitch by the Commander, too.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:38 PM

Yeah Manny!

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:38 PM

brilliant analysis by McCarver. Manny what about your hat.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:39 PM

I heart Manny... :-)

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:39 PM

Now with that little "Manny being Manny" incident is a time when you miss Don & Remdawg.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:41 PM

SHUT UP ABOUT MANNY'S HAT.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:42 PM

Definitely raining harder now.

Aw, Lugo.

Cool map graphic, though...

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:44 PM

Portland is a great city. We go up to MDI most summers. Love it.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:45 PM

Somerville always gets dumped on.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:45 PM

from extra bases:

We've also gotten word that both teams appealed the error on Alex Rodriguez yesterday, on the ball hit by Pedroia. It was certainly a play that generated some debate around the press box. If the ruling is reversed, that would give Chien-Ming Wang a three hitter.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:45 PM

Yeah, that'd be the hard stuff over here. It's officially pouring. If this were over the field, they'd bring out the tarp ASAP.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:45 PM

I'm definitely going to back when the weather's a bit nicer and spend some time there. We were there to pick up some furniture, and then turned right around and left.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:46 PM

No rain on the South Shore yet - sky is still blue with a few fluffy clouds.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:47 PM

methinks there will be a game delay

[ Erin ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:48 PM

Here in Amherst Mass its sunny with some clouds

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 4:48 PM

Those clouds look NASTY.

[ Ian ] says:

wow the building to the left of the prudential center has disappeared.

[ Liza ] says:

Bye-bye Yankees!

[ ecl1958 ] says:

[ Erin ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:05 PM

I mean Beckett. (I hate this keyboard!)

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:05 PM

I would say "Beckett is really dealing today" - but then I'd sound like McCarver, because he's said that no fewer than three times already.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:06 PM

there's plenty of joshie to go around

[ kirstina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:06 PM

i see we're thinking alike liza =P

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:06 PM

[ Trish ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:06 PM

DAMN MANNY

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:07 PM

Josh is HOT.
As a pitcher, I mean here.
Not to rule out other possible connotations.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:07 PM

McCarver's as bad with that as the rest of the media saying that Tiger is lurking at The Masters.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:09 PM

Ian - Joshie agrees.

(heh)

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:11 PM

Um, agrees with the "lots of Joshie to go around" comment.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:13 PM

fuckin fox graphics and saying beckett had given up 1 hit.

[ Trish ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:14 PM

I will call Joshua Patrick Beckett many things, but Joshie is not one of them.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:15 PM

I usually just call him Josh Baseball

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:15 PM

Beckett *had* given up a hit - they didn't rule that Pedroia bobble as an error.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:17 PM

Bleh.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:22 PM

Nice catch Jacoby!
Yuk. Runner scores.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:22 PM

Good catch by Jacoby!

Too bad a run scored anyway.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:22 PM

This is not going well. BOO TO THIS INNING.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:23 PM

fc - We're thinking the same way.

UGH.

Beckett had a bad fifth last time, bad sixth this time--should we expect a bad seventh his next outing?

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:23 PM

JOSH threw a WP? JOSH!?!?

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:23 PM

TG, clearly the crowd agrees.

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:26 PM

so now its time for our bats to come to life...

[ Trish ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:27 PM

Oh man, FOX cut away before Josh could drop the f-bomb. You know he did.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:27 PM

I think a water cooler is going to pay for that inning from Mr. Beckett.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:28 PM

71 pitches for Beckett

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:29 PM

that wp is going to make for some interesting post game press conference comments =P

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:30 PM

71 through 7 is not bad at all. Reminiscent of 93 through 9...?

-knocks on wood-

[ fc ] says:

THAT"S A STRIKE MY ASS

[ Ian ] says:

I was in tears while Papi was at bat. I feel so badly for him.

Can we clone Manny?

on April 12, 2008 5:42 PM

Anyone know what radio station has the game on?

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:43 PM

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUK

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:43 PM

They are so condescending. To EVERYONE. Pedroia's now "plucky." Fans need to be informed that he could only get a loss after he gave up 8 hits in less than 6 innings.

YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUK!

[ njdevils ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:43 PM

Yeah!
YOOUUUUKK!

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:43 PM

YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
K

[ Renee ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:43 PM

That was....awesome.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:43 PM

Woo HOOOOOO!!!! Bet y'all can hear me screaming all the way from North Carolina! Manny, you are the MANNY!

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:43 PM

In Boston, it's WRKO 680 AM

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:44 PM

It's on WRKO.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:44 PM

AND Youk too!

[ CdnSoxGirl ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:44 PM

And that is a prime example of why I will only ever be a Red Sox fan

[ Erin ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:45 PM

Can I get that online? I live out in Western Mass so I don't think I can get that radio station.

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:45 PM

how about Manny and his running this year

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:46 PM

I always try and put all the TV/radio information at the top of these gameday posts.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:47 PM

Eew. What was that?

[ shark ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:48 PM

Will NESN still have the post game interview even though the game was on FOX?

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:49 PM

No NESN tonight. Bruins are on

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:49 PM

Erin use the Red Sox radio network link and find the town closest to you

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:50 PM

now thats more like it

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:50 PM

How weird was that seeing Youk turn the double play?

[ Renee ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:51 PM

Youk is the man!

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:51 PM

The Medical Patient (that's what I call Giambi because he always looks sickly to me) hits into a DB. excellent.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:51 PM

Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk.
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedie.
Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasey.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:52 PM

Anyone want to drive me back up to Hartford after the game? I should have just stayed up there last night.

[ shark ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:53 PM

Lots of F Bombs going on inside Josh's head.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:54 PM

Um, scary thunder.

What is it with very few hits in the past few days?

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:54 PM

cmon Josh - finish him off.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:56 PM

Nice camera work by not showing us the close play at 2nd

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:56 PM

This is worrying.

Bye-bye Beckett.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:58 PM

Hmm. Didn't see him drop any F-bombs as he left the mound. I was fully expecting to see at least a few.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:58 PM

88 pitches for Beckett on the day

[ shark ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:59 PM

I'm sure there were quite a few during that commercial break.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 5:59 PM

Becketty-boo continues his case for truly being a 10-year-old boy by biting his nails adorably in the dugout.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:00 PM

MDC MDC MDC MDC

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:00 PM

Great job, MannyDel!

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:00 PM

*MDK

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:00 PM

Nice, MDC.

[ Erin ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:00 PM

Thanks for the help everyone!

Good job MDC!

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:00 PM

good job Manny

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:03 PM

Bruney reminds me of Gagne. I think it's the hair.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:03 PM

was that a guy in a captain america outfit

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:04 PM

Nice devilish grin by Josh Baseball

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:06 PM

Fixin' his fly?

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:10 PM

I actually got the trivia question right. Go me.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:12 PM

Now we have both torrential rain and thunder.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:12 PM

ENORMOUS roll of thunder, holy shit. 3 seconds after the lightning means half a mile away, right?

Seriously. I think the house shook.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:12 PM

this one's about to hit rain delay status

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:15 PM

Checking a couple of weather sites, the radar doesn't look like much...pretty localized weather. Hopefully it'll blow out quickly.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:16 PM

Okajimaaaa

Papelbums up in the pen.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:18 PM

WAY TO GO JD

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:18 PM

Nice catch JD!!!

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:18 PM

Nice catch, JD! Oh yeah, nice glovework by Lugo too.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:18 PM

Nice job focusing the camera right there.

Woo JD, though!

[ Erin ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:18 PM

Holy crap that was a great catch by JD.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:19 PM

It's about 2 minutes or so from an absolute downpour at the Fens

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:21 PM

This could get hairy.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:21 PM

Never mind--

SHIPPING UP TO BOSTON WAAAAAAAAAYOOOOOOO

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:22 PM

A little rain delay would give Pap more warmup time.

[ jenny again ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:22 PM

C'MON BON-BON!

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:24 PM

fc - Good point. I guess that is fortunate.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:24 PM

Good call Ian. Former groundskeeping skills coming into play. Took all of 4 minutes.

[ njdevils ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:24 PM

"It's about 2 minutes or so from an absolute downpour at the Fens"
Nice call, Ian!

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:26 PM

As was mentioned to me: God seems to have an interest in this game.*

*mhcranberry

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:26 PM

njdevils, I was going to say pretty much the same thing. Ian, you sure got it right!

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:30 PM

Well I'd give props to Ian but he seems to have taken care of that for himself. And rightly so.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:31 PM

Gonna go eat dinner. Good luck Papelbums and bye everyone!

[ Trish ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:32 PM

Watching the weather is more interesting than Rockies/DBacks.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:33 PM

I'm a little cocky like our starting pitcher today :D

It's easy to judge by watching the radar and putting it in motion.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:34 PM

Now if I was smart, i'd go get my stuff together for the ride to hartford and then figure out how much longer this delay will be so i could actually get there and be back watching the game on a different tv.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:35 PM

Guess I'll wash dishes, fix supper, etc., but will leave the TV on so I know when things get rolling again. Will pop back over here in a few...

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:37 PM

Trish, you got that right. Ian, how long do you think it will be?

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:41 PM

at least another 20 to 30 mins

[ fenwaygal ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:43 PM

i'm going to jump in with an approx 7:15 restart...by the time it stop raining, and the cover comes off....amazingly 20 miles away the sun is out

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:44 PM

Okay, thanks.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:49 PM

OK folks i'm out of here. I'm going to make the drive

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:57 PM

Hey! Just got back from D.C. - I missed most of it (although the rain delay is quite nice...I'll catch the end!).

Didn't miss any Jed, right? Just checking - I know he wasn't a starter...

[ Piney61 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 6:58 PM

Am I the only one a little bothered by the timing of this rain delay? I probably am, but it kinda rubs me the wrong way.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:00 PM

Piney, how so? I figure there's not much that can be done about the weather...

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:04 PM

Back--and hey, Steph and Piney, and bye, Ian.

[ jenny again ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:04 PM

whoo hoo! i can watch my alma mater notre dame in the NCAA hockey championship game while we wait!

[ Trish ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:07 PM

Jeanie Velasco shouldn't have done those last two lines during the commercial break, she's just a LITTLE too revved up.

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:07 PM

I'm getting my pictures up now - I was at the Cherry Blossom Festival (Sakura Matsuri), except that there were no actual cherry blossoms. Oh, well. Still fun stuff...and I got this really ominous shot of the Capitol.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:11 PM

Ahhhh, cherry blossoms. Ours are in full swing right now. There's a street in town, appropriately named Cherry Street, that is lined with them from one end to the other. The local freeway runs right by it and I get to enjoy it every day on my way home from work. :-)

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:17 PM

...what the hell, Jonathan? They really need to keep cameras away from that man...

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:18 PM

OK, just HOW does a bulldog "jump" on a counter to eat a game ball?

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:20 PM

Oh, no--I have to leave at 7:45! I hope they play quickly.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:22 PM

I hope they play quickly too -- I'm getting incredibly hungry. Thought the delay would be long enough for me to fix dinner, but I was wrong.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:23 PM

Oh, yay--go Cardinals!

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:25 PM

Got my pictures up on Photobucket! Ominous much?

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:28 PM

Raining AGAIN here.

[ Piney61 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:29 PM

ecl -- It's more because of the fact that like it's the freaking 8th inning and I mean they least they could do is like get the final out and then just call the game after that, but alas that's the umpire's call. I do recall last season when Melvin Mora got ejected because he complained to the umpires about their restarting of a game in the pouring rain and then kept it going and going and going well after the 5 inning limit(an official game is 5 innings)

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:32 PM

...okay, that woman with the umbrella was...interesting...

[ Trish ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:38 PM

There is some spectacular lightning going on over South Boston right now.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:41 PM

Yeah, I see your point, Piney. That rain looks pretty intense on TV, and the radar looks like it could "train" over Boston for awhile. I don't know every single baseball rule in the book -- can they call a game partway through an inning? Of course, with much of the baseball world primed to see Paps vs A-Rod, there would be much angst if the game didn't resume. That said, they really should have gotten that at-bat over with before they went to a delay.

Guess I have time to boil this pasta after all...

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:46 PM

Would you believe me if I said this man's name was Will Smith?

(The voice you hear talking about LJ and Photobucket in the background is mine. Sorry!)

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:49 PM

...are they still showing the game, or have they just given up on it? They've jumped to NASCAR here...

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:51 PM

1863: cool lighting in your Capitol shot. I haven't been to DC yet, but am hoping to go with my daughter's class next year.

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:53 PM

Thanks, although I guess the real credit should go to the weather...my camera's not fancy and I'm no good at photography.

D.C.'s awesome! I've been there a few times, and it's an awesome city to visit. (All the history's really cool!)

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:54 PM

It's NSACAR out here, too.

Now that I'm done working for the day, I'm ready to relax and watch Pap kick butt. My Mom and brother are into NASCAR, but I don't care much. Give me baseball any day.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:54 PM

1863, as far as I can tell they're waiting for the next round of rain to pass, and since there's NASCAR on later, they're doing some pregame stuff. I wish they had stuck to baseball recaps.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:56 PM

Jules, give me baseball all day every day! And even after 20 years in the South, I haven't warmed up to NASCAR.

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:56 PM

I can't wait to go to DC. I *love* history--especially the Revolutionary period. I'm like a kid at Toys-R-Us when I go to Boston.

Has anyone seen this cute photo of Manny from last night's game?

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:57 PM

We had one of my daughter's friends over and we asked her about sports. She was funny when she mentioned NASCAR, "cars going around in circles just doesn't do it for me."

Give me guys on a diamond any time. Like NOW!

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 7:59 PM

As far as auto racing goes, I'm into turning in both directions, thank you. (loves rallying because it's so much more challenging!)

But baseball is still first and foremost for me.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:05 PM

radio said around 8:15 at the earliest.

and can i say, it's weird going from widescreen high def to standard def on a smaller tv.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:07 PM

And now i have to figure out what channel is what up here. At least I gambled on making the drive to Hartford and it paid off.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:12 PM

Jules, yep, saw that pic. He is so precious!

If you love history from the Revolutionary Period, have you ever checked out Eastern Long Island? Specifically the South Fork, i.e., the Hamptons but not related to celebrities? The roots there date from the mid-1600s and the descendants of the old settlers are very committed to historic preservation. I'm an 11th generation descendant (grew up on Western L.I. but spent lots of time there). I got back up there last year for the first time in quite awhile and, as always, was in awe at my surroundings. HIGHLY recommended if you like history from that era of the American journey.

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:13 PM

(takes a mental note because she has access to Long Island during the summer) I'm a huge military history geek, so done and done.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:14 PM

Extra bases is saying 8:25 start time

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:18 PM

ecl1958, I haven't been to Long Island at all, but that sounds fascinating. I'll have to go some time. I live in California (I'm a native), but go back east to visit my in-laws (my husband is a native New Englander and got me totally hooked on the Sox ;-).

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:19 PM

Long Island is one huge traffic jam :D

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:19 PM

No kidding. (loathes the LIE)

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:22 PM

1863, I'm not on LJ but could conceivably sign up (not up for blogging, really, but could still sign up) or we could figure out some other way to get in touch off board so we could communicate more easily, yes? My 91-year-old aunt could be a hugely valuable resource. She still summers at her tiny house in East Hampton with a bit of help from her daughters, has all her marbles, is a member of DAR, and knows most all the older locals around there. You could probably get hooked up with all manner of historical goodies through her. And...she's very used to young people because her very hip and urbane grandson visits often from Manhattan and brings his equally hip girlfriend. She also can entertain a roomful of people for hours with stories of local lore. Big fun, hanging out with my Aunt Grace!

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:24 PM

Extra bases saying that the game will be on FX (channel 248 on Directv).

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:24 PM

Ian, un less things have changed since I've been there, Fox is Ch. 61.

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:25 PM

...ooh. (drools) I'm a student of military history right now (my college minor is literally Civil War Era Studies). I'm taking historical methods next semester, and she sounds like a great person to do interviews with!

Some people sign up on LJ just to comment and whatnot. It's just fine! I'll probably eventually get a Facebook just for keeping in touch with people, not for posting pictures, which is essentially the same thing...

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:25 PM

LOL fc, I knew that much, it was figuring out where on the cable box, channels are different here at my parents house in newington. I'm used to my channels and our lake house's channels. I rarely ever come here. And now i have to figure out what channel FX is on the cable system. OH THE JOY,.

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:26 PM

does anyone knwo what channel FX is?

[ shark ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:27 PM

So, it won't be back on FOX?

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:27 PM

OK i found it. LOL

[ shark ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:27 PM

Take that back..

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:27 PM

1863, be sure to read Facebook's policies before posting photos. They have tough language regarding their rights to your work.

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:27 PM

oh just kidding, it's back on fox

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:28 PM

That's why I won't post any. I can't stand the way Facebook consumes people's lives! I'm even drawing my own bio picture...

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:28 PM

No it's not coming back on FOX. Just FX.

I can tell you it's on channel 24 on COX in newington, ct

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:28 PM

FX still has Terminator. I've got it on Fox until they say otherwise.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:28 PM

It's back on Fox now!

[ jenny again ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:28 PM

we have baseball! eee. WHY AM I SO NERVOUS.

(nd is losing to bc 3-1 in hockey. GO IRISH.)

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:28 PM

Ian and 1863, you're right, it's gotten WAY built up since my growing-up years there in the 60s and 70s (I was on the North Shore, about 1/3 of the way out). But even now, there's more to Long Island than the LIE. If you get way east in the off season, it's a whole 'nother world...

Makes me homesick just thinking about it.

Looks like it's nearly time, FINALLY, to play ball at Fenway! Back to the other room to watch...

[ shark ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:29 PM

It's back on FOX here...

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:29 PM

Hey everyone--I'm at a babysitting gig right now and the kids are in bed. I'm planning on putting the game on the radio when it starts up, so can you guys let me know when it does?

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:29 PM

Ok shows you what i know. they have it on both channels.

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:30 PM

It's on Fox here, too.

Go Pap!!!!!!

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:30 PM

My dad grew up in Locust Valley on Long Island.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:31 PM

Turn on your radio Liza

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:31 PM

It's back!?

on April 12, 2008 8:31 PM

Thank youuuu!

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:31 PM

I'm incredibly nervous, too, and I'm not sure why.

Wouldn't hurt the world if A-Rod was randomly struck by lightning right now, would it?

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:31 PM

Ian, Newington? I'm from Newington and my parents are still there.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:32 PM

Not at all Steph

[ Ian ] says:

yes newington. I grew up here. graduated 1989

[ 1863_project ] says:

(mutes the television) Bad commentary...and knots in my stomach.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:34 PM

That's a switch for you--the rest of the country can watch the game but I'm stuck on radio. :P

C'mon, PAP!!

[ shark ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:34 PM

I don't usually use the word *hate*, but I really, really, really hate A-Rod.

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:34 PM

I don't know anybody who likes A-Rod. Don't blame you one bit.

STRIKE THREEEEEEEEEE!

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:35 PM

2 hours 11 minutes of rain delay was well worth the wait to watch Papelbuns strike out gayrod on 3 pitches.

[ CdnSoxGirl ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:35 PM

I LOVE Papelbon!!!!

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:35 PM

HA! Take THAT, arod!

Made my day.

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:35 PM

i heart papelbon!

Memo to A-Rod: Pap has your Oreos.

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:37 PM

screaming very loudly in my living room

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:37 PM

I'm mad I couldn't see that OR scream.

(/selfpity)

SWEET CAROLINE (BAM BAM BAM)...

[ shark ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:37 PM

My husband, the yankee lover, thinks that ARod is the best player in baseball.....trust me, it is the start of many, many arguments!

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:37 PM

nice 15.75 era latroy

[ jenny again ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:38 PM

oh god, poor papi. SEND HELP.

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:40 PM

shark, I don't know how you do it ;-)

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:40 PM

I love that Youk's hitting in the five-spot.

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:41 PM

Is it wrong that the most exciting thing about that inning to me were the shots of the dugout because I had a chance to look for Jed (who I didn't see, but still)?

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:42 PM

Well Youk certainly didn't look very happy there.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:43 PM

To clarify: I meant Youk didn't look happy with himself after his at bat. Nothing to do with being in the 5-spot.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:43 PM

Giambi, Posada, Cano... jeez. Talk about three hitters.

Let's go Pap! Nail this coffin SHUT!

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:44 PM

(mutes her TV again) The stress is literally eating me away inside. Ugh...

[ shark ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:44 PM

Easy..I watch in the living room and send him downstairs to his "man room".....When the Sox do something great, I stomp on the floor. When the Skanks do something, he bangs the ceiling with a broom...all very childish, indeed, but somehow it works!

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:44 PM

Ian, I grew up not far from Locust Valley at all...in a place so small it didn't even have a post office, but it's between Syosset and Cold Spring Harbor. Went to CSH schools all the way through. Fantastic place to grow up.

Liza, whereabouts are your grandparents?

1863, I'd probably sign up for LJ rather than Facebook. I've heard too much ickiness about Facebook.

Glad to see A-Rod go down!

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:45 PM

PapelKK!

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:45 PM

LJ beats the pants off of Facebook. It's easier to control your privacy, in my opinion - you don't even have to give your name!

FOX loves doing Extreme Closeups of Pap's Stare.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:46 PM

dangggggggggggggggggg 97 MPH

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:46 PM

jenny again, I know what you mean. I wonder if all the Red Sox fans in the world can just send Papi lots and lots of good vibes. It's starting to make me sad what he's going through.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:46 PM

Steph I made a nickname for that last year.

It's the Papelglare

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:48 PM

Somebody made a macro of the Papelglare during the postseason last year that read "Where is your God now?" I'd upload it but I'm currently uploading a video and that takes a long time...

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:48 PM

shark, that made me laugh. Too funny.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:49 PM

Ecl - The western part, near Long Beach, I think.

C'mon, Pap! One more strike!

[ shark ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:49 PM

Most of the time, it is funny. There have been some veyr quiet nights, however.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:50 PM

PAPELKKK

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:50 PM

Hip hip jorge he struck out

and damn you jorge, you're ran up paps pitch count.

[ shark ] says:

I am STOMPING!!!!!! Don't hear any broom!!!

[ 1863_project ] says:

Yes, my video finished! I was able to get this up in time!

Where is your God now?

[ kristina ] says:

excuse me, let me introduce you to our closer

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:52 PM

One more, Pap. Just one more.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:53 PM

Nice Steph.

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:53 PM

Wish I could take credit! It was somebody on the Sox community on LJ...

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:53 PM

Steph - That. Is. Awesome.

PAP...

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:54 PM

I really wish I could remember who made it...they deserve proper credit.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:55 PM

I shouldn't complain about being up here. I can watch the Celtics after this.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:56 PM

nice warning by FOX there

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:56 PM

OK, NOW over to FX.
What a stupid time to do that to us.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:56 PM

no friggin warning either.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:57 PM

...YES!!!!

[ Ellen ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:57 PM

WTF!?!?! I hate Fox.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:57 PM

Nice job SOX.

I love that Dirty Watah

[ Ellen ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:57 PM

Phew! Papelbon rocks.

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:58 PM

woooooohooooooo!

Time to cook dinner.

night all.

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:58 PM

Did he strike out the last batter, too? I couldn't find the channel in time...

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:58 PM

That was really bad by FOX for not telling us they were going to switch it over like that.

Yes they did they were going to switch it but there should have been a warning.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 8:59 PM

Ah, Newington on a Saturday night.

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:00 PM

exactly fc, not a damn thing to do up here. especially when all your friends up here are married and have rugrats when you're single

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:01 PM

When they started talking about FX earlier, I found the channel number so I'd be prepared to switch, and I did so a few minutes before the race was to start. Sounds like it's a good thing I did.

Pap is totally amazing, glare/stare and all.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:01 PM

The last batter was out at first.
With Papelbon directing traffic and a nice play by Pedroia/Casey.

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:02 PM

Good enough!

I don't appear to get FX at college. I get it at home, but not here.

FOX hates the Red Sox, pure and simple. They didn't want the mainstream viewers to see them win.

[ Liza ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:02 PM

That was Robinson Cano who grounded to first.

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:02 PM

beating the stankees just feels so good

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:03 PM

Papelbon was channeling his inner Tavarez who is known to direct traffic on the infield.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:04 PM

And if they had held off instead of dumping people off Fox and interrupting a movie on FX for a 3-minute window, they could have cut to Nascar, what, 5 minutes into it?

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:04 PM

And for you Celtics fans, Scot Pollard is doing the color commentary on the broadcast. I guess he wasn't active for tonight's game.

[ fc ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:05 PM

Yup, Ian, that was the reference.
But I would rather NOT contemplate that Pap has an inner Tavarez. That would be frightening...and dangerous.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:05 PM

I know, it doesn't make sense. Cars going round and round for hours...what's the problem with missing 5 minutes of that?

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:06 PM

What they should have done is when they came back said ok before we start here, we are going to move the game to FX so that you have time to switch over.

THey pay alot of money for NASCAR and MLB and it's not a good thing when you piss off fans of either one. For me I'm a NASCAR fan but don't switch in the middle of a freakin game like that.

a little warning would have been nice.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:06 PM

Dang...I've got an entire pound of pasta that's trying to harden in the colander because I let it sit for so long.

Be back momentarily...gotta take care of my supper.

[ 1863_project ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:08 PM

Whoo, finally finished the Sakura Matsuri post...that took way too long. Never upload videos on Photobucket - it literally takes forever...

[ Ian ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:14 PM

Steph how come you didn't sing.

[ kristina ] says:
on April 12, 2008 9:26 PM

well i enjoyed my first game with all of you, time to eat some dinner now....we'll do it again tomorrow!

[ jules ] says:
on April 12, 2008 11:59 PM

Ian, Scot Pollard was my favorite player on the Sacramento Kings when he was here (well, he and Vlade Divac). He always played with a lot of heart.

[ Jade ] says:

Anyone watching the Cubs/Phillies game?
