For the rest of the country, along with being a big Sox game, and Marathon Monday, Patriot's Day also commemorates the Battle of Lexington and Concord, which was emblematic of how people in Massachusetts just love to stir up some mayhem for everyone else to clean up. YOU'RE WELCOME.
Anyway, its a state holiday and you can't get anywhere on public transportation because the marathon blocks all kinds of public thoroughfares and everyone has to get to the sox game and all that.
That being said, i DO NOT get the day off today, because I work at a hospital, and those places never freakin close. Especially on days when thousands of people will be trying to run 26.2 miles.
It's not a holiday out here, but all American's should be more aware of Patriot's Day. Speaking of, if you're interesting in learning more about Lexington and Concord, I can't recommend this book enough.
I'll be keeping an eye on the game via GameDay. My daughter's track coach is running the marathon today.
The Sox had a good weekend--drove me crazy yesterday (until the 7th ;-). I hope Clay has a good outing. AND I hope Jed plays. He's been impressive so far.
I did not get the day off either, if it makes you feel better...and my dad had to drive me to Alewife because apparently the Redcoats are causing all sorts of hell on Mass Ave right now and I can't get the 62/76 bus. damn british. I should have known better, coming from the ultimate historic town Lexington.
break out the tricorn hat!
I have to say though....there was the CUTEST group of little boys on the red line with their dad, on their way to their first game. they were like 8, 10 and 11 or something, and they were all decked out in their gear - it was like watching a live version of The Sandlot right in front of me. they kept asking their dad quesitons and they each were holding a ball and hoping to get it signed during batting practice. I love seeing little kids all excited for their first time at Fenway :-)
it also kind of sucks that I won't get to see runners sh-t their pants on live TV today :-(
I love Patriots Day! I lucked out and did get the day off (thanks, Big University!). We also are treated to the lovely ramblings of one Mr. Bob Lobel, who has already been rebuked today on the air. (slightly paraphrased so I don't have to spell the Ukrainian runner's last name)
Bob: She's breaking away from the pack!
Running Expert: No, she's not.
jules, I think Francona said Jed would be starting at third today during yesterday's post-game press conference.
I used to take the 62/76 (in fact, I remember when it was still 2 lines)... I used to be able to hear the reenactment on the Green because my family lived right off Waltham Street in the Center.
Didn't go to LHS, but went to Fiske (when the old building was still there) and Diamond. Little sis got redistricted around through Fiske, Bowman, Bridge.
My mum was in local politics for years and years, but we fled the suburbs in 2000...
I remember Patriots' Days of my childhood very clearly-- first, my dentist being one of the minutemen shot down on the Green, second, learning about it every single freakin year....
I went to college with this girl from Concord who maintained furiously that the shot heard 'round the world was fired in CONCORD, which is PATENTLY ABSURD, since how could it have been heard 'round the world if shots had already been fired in Lexington?
Anyway, my drive to high school in Concord took me through Minuteman National Park there... Route 2A = hallowed ground.
hey, no sh-t - my 9th grade science teacher played a Redcoat. and our papergirl played a shot Minuteman.
did you do the 5 am reenactment? lining up on Mass Ave outside the church with donuts and coffee? and it was all completely pointless because you couldnt see anyhting, you'd just see guys marching down Mass ave, then hear a gunshot, then it'd be over and everyone would go home? yeah.
you haven't lived until you've broken into a historic tavern and stolen a tricorn hat - as a high school classmate of mine once did while on LSD.
ahhh 2A- what is it with Route 2A and there being an annual high school drunk driving accident somewhere along there every year, and it was always a kid from Lex or Conc that died.
my swimteam used to train at Minuteman Tech every year - ahhh Minuteman Tech - the burnout school. that was a scary 8th grade field trip - "if you don't watch out, kids - this could be YOU!" ahhhh!!!!
I think we did the reenactment ONCE. Other years we would just wake up to musketfire. I mean, our backyard backed up to a church right on Mass Ave so there was plenty of action... And I remember the musketfire used to spook out my dog like nothing else.
I'm also proud to say the house I grew up in was built in 1794. I love that house. Metro-west Boston is one of the few places in the country with so many houses that hold.
In your account by the way you forgot the few minutes where they would stand around, and every once in a while yell at each other unintelligibly-- BUT WE ALL KNEW THE SCRIPT!
"Stand your ground. Don't fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here."
"Lay down your arms, you damned rebels!"
And after the shot from Buckman Tavern: "Fire fellow soldiers, for God's sake fire!"
And then they all got shot anyway.
But then the SNEAKY MINUTEMEN went into the woods and did some guerilla warfare on their stodgy lobsterback columns! HA! North Bridge! YEAH!
Yes, fellow Americans, Massachusetts people have brain problems. We are very easily excitable, are always down for a good fight, and never ever ever EVER let go of anything.
I studied the colonial period 5 different times in the 12 years I was in the MA public school system, so I am totally historied out about Lexington and Concord.
News reports have it that the flu is "making the rounds of the clubhouse." Not good.
Enjoy Patriots' Day, all you folks in MA. I envy those of you who got the day off. I'm slogging away at my job here in NC. Will check in on the game via Gameday at some point. TTFN!
You have to give the guy credit though for stepping up to the plate to replace RemDawg today. I'm surprised they didn't pull Dave O'Brien from the radio broadcast since he's got TV experience.
my sister used to babysit for this family from Chicago, who didnt quite get the concept of Patriots Day - they were like, "That's funny -we don't celebrate Bears Day!"
I used to take Patriot's Day off on my own terms even if I lived in RI. I did that my senior year of high school and it turned out okay(well I had permission from my mom because my friend was in town that weekend for the first time in years) so it worked out. And I ended up winning $50 on a scratch ticket. That taught me that it's okay to play hooky just as long as you can catch up with schoolwork.
*shrugs shoulders* I'm still young and stupid, don't mind me
Lyndsay - freebaseballradio.com is a list of links to radio stations that broadcast games. It has both the Sox stations and Texas stations, and you often have to try a lot of them to find one. ecl has had some luck with one of the Texas stations - I'll see if I can find it from last night.
Lyndsay, in case you can't actually listen to the game on Gameday (I thought that's the part that required the subscription, please correct me if I'm wrong!), the game will almost certainly be somewhere on freebaseballradio.com. Just follow the instructions. I found it on the first link for the Texas side of the aisle (I believe it was KZXN 1350 or something along those lines).
The audio on gameday needs a subscription and none of the Texas links worked so far today. I haven't tried all the Boston ones though since I'm at school and have to study.
Interesting. I know you sign up for a free account. I'm surprised it's asking you to login, tho. I just double checked, mlb.com doesn't have me logged in.
I don't thiink I will ever figure out when the F a pitcher balks. if I were a pitcher, I'd probably balk all the time and not even know it. hell, I'd probably balk home a run.
he is throwing a lot of strikes - I will give him that. and after I wrote that I was like, wait, 60 in the 4th isnt too bad.
I just hate when Buck pitches REALLY well but the other guy pitches a superhuman game, so he doesn't get the win - like when Wang pitched that 1 or 2-hitter complete game. Buck had a good game, but he was just slightly worse than Wang, who was absolutely unhittable. and the guy on the mound for Texas aint doing too shabby either.
I'm pretty sure that no-hitter will haunt Buckholz for the rest of his career.
eh, the Gameday simulated version of this game REALLY pales in comparison to actually experiencing it in video/audio. it kind of doesnt fulfill my needs that well.
if Ellsbury is rounding the bases BEHIND you though, it must kind of suck, like when he was trying to score behind Sean Casey a game or so ago - Casey looked like he was being chased, LOL.
that's what's so great about him though - if he gets on first, you know he's going to steal second. if he gets to second, you know he can make it home on any ball put into play. so once he's on the basepaths, he's basically an automatic run home.
I'm not having anything quite so fun as sausage dogs and garlic fries for lunch today. Cabbage/carrot salad w/vinaigrette dressing, and tuna on multigrain bread. Gotta stay healthy here! A beer sounds lovely, but it would rather be frowned on here at the office...
LOL...I meant those are necessary at a game. AT&T Park has awesome polish sausage dogs and garlic fries. Today will definitely be healthier with a salad ;-).
I can just imagine me with my door closed with a dog and Sam Adams. ha!
anyone running in front of Ellsbury has gotta be going "jesus Christ, here comes Ellsbury...f-ck f-ck f-ck, that guy's gonna run me over. I'm gonna pull a hamstring..."
Jules, I did the same thing last night with Mets/Phillies. There's nothing like the thwack of a bat and a good play-by-play to sweeten the end of a long day.

Spoken like a local, TG!
Happy Marathon Monday!
