Hi Y'all!

:: waves ::

How's the weather back there? I hear there's chance of showers. I hope not!

:: sends sun vibes back east ::

;-)

I'm looking forward to seeing Colon tonight.

[ njdevils ] says:
on May 21, 2008 6:59 PM

Hey, Jules!
I wasn't brave enough to make the first comment, so I'm glad you did!

[ jules ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:02 PM

It's OK, nj...

Isn't Colon a big guy? wow.

[ Bethie ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:03 PM

Hey Jules and nj!!

I'm happy I finally got my computer to cooperate so I can watch the game tonight! Excited to see what Colon is gonna do.

[ Abby ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:03 PM

I think Don and Jerry are wearing matching jackets. Anyone else notice this?

[ jules ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:04 PM

I love this RSN commercial with Paps doing his "dance" and Fisk calling it fair. So cool.

I'm sooooooooo ready for baseball tonight.

[ jules ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:05 PM

Hi Bethei and Abby...

I noticed their jackets, too. Particularly that DO wasn't wearing that 70s-inspired blue number with white buttons. Remy (rightfully) gives him a hard time when he wears that.

[ Bethie ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:06 PM

Just downloaded lester's no hitter off of Itunes too. Some required re-watching for the next few days.

[ Ian ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:06 PM

Ouch my Colon!!

I'll be here later once our radio show is over at 8 pm.

[ Abby ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:08 PM

Uh oh - was that an error?

[ Abby ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:11 PM

I'll be back in a bit - gotta go to the library before it closes.

[ jules ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:13 PM

LOL on the ump calling that last strike. DO and Remy crack me up.

[ Bethie ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:16 PM

good for the obliques, huh? HA

[ Abby ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:16 PM

Jules - he seemed very excited!

(i haven't left yet...)

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:17 PM

I didn't think that was hit hard enough to be gone. But yay!

[ jules ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:17 PM

JACOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBY!

AWESOME!

Ok, I've got to check the kidlet and think about what to make for dinner...back later.

[ Abby ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:17 PM

Jon Lester kept calling Jacoby "Jake" during his interview post-no-hitter. It was odd.

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:19 PM

AWW. Right-field fist-bump does my heart good.

[ Bethie ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:19 PM

Well, this is starting out nicely

[ njdevils ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:21 PM

Jacoby!
Jules, I live too far away to get NESN, but maybe TG or Ian could get a video of that commercial up later…(hint, hint).

[ Jane ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:26 PM

Dayum. Our future's so bright, mama needs shades.

I'm thinking Schill was a more than a touch prophetic when he named Jacoby, Dustin, Clay & Jon the Mount Rushmore for the future of this club.

I love it. Do we have a graphic for that yet?

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:27 PM

Hey, NJ, have you seen this? Or this?

Also, Jane, I'm on it.

[ njdevils ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:30 PM

Just in case anyone was wondering, ecl1958 said she'd be late coming to this thread tonight. She wanted me to make sure no one thought that anything bad happened to her since she's always here for every game.

[ Ian ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:30 PM

it's up on my blog somewhere

[ njdevils ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:33 PM

Thanks, Liza. Look at the third video in the 'related videos' column on this one. =D

Thanks, Ian. I'll go look for that now...

[ jules ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:34 PM

Confession:

That AT&T commercial with the Motorhead fan who calls himself a "dillweed" kills me *every* time.

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:35 PM

HAH. Steph would be proud.

[ Abby ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:38 PM

Jules, it is endearing.

Twice tonight Don has said "Tomko" and I thought he said "Taco." I'm not sure what this means.

[ jules ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:41 PM

It's really funny if you were in high school in the 80s ;-)

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 7:48 PM

[ blood and whiskey ] says:
on May 21, 2008 8:02 PM

[ ecl1958 ] says:

Hey everyone -- JUST walked in the door, haven't even unloaded the groceries yet. I am SO ready to get into this game!

NJ: Thanks for letting folks know of my tardiness.

Will be back momentarily -- gotta put away the perishables and get into my PJs and get dinner together.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 8:27 PM

[ starlightmusic ] says:
on May 21, 2008 8:32 PM

[ starlightmusic ] says:

Hmmm...no pleats. What's going on here?

[ jules ] says:
on May 21, 2008 8:33 PM

hey all...

I'm glad Colon got out of that jam. He's doing OK for his first game in the majors in a loooooooooong time.

Back to cooking...

[ blood and whiskey ] says:

C'mon, Tek...

[ Liza ] says:

TEK!

[ starlightmusic ] says:

[ ecl1958 ] says:

Yeah! Good goin', Tek! You just improved my evening considerably.

[ blood and whiskey ] says:

Yay for Coco speed and Lugo bat!

[ blood and whiskey ] says:

alright now, Papi..

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 8:58 PM

Yay, 5 runs!

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:02 PM

Hansen scared me for a minute. That 56 looks awfully close to 58.

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:10 PM

Remy and DO get so distracted sometimes.

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:27 PM

Hellooooooooooo?

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:29 PM

Helloooooooo!!!!

I've been eating, doing dishes, etc. Why is everyone else so quiet?

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:35 PM

I'm quiet because there's nobody else here!

But good job Lopez :)

[ Ian ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:37 PM

because they are watching the American Idol finale that's why.

I'm just laying here. I've got a wicked pissah of a headache about to get off the computer for a while because the screen isn't helping matters.

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:38 PM

Jacoby's 3-for-3 so far tonight. Wooo.

Feel better Ian. :)

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:38 PM

Yeah, he did a nice job there! I wonder where everyone is.

The next week is going to be sort of odd as far as games, with that West Coast trip...and the day game tomorrow..

Yeah, Jacoby!

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:39 PM

Awww, Ian. It must be the day for that. I woke up with one. I hope you feel better.

[ blood and whiskey ] says:

I just realized that I'm going to miss *8 GAMES!!1!* between tomorrow and next Saturday.. x[

(/random)

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:41 PM

I wonder how many SB he'll end up with this year?

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:41 PM

Pleatsssssss

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:42 PM

I'm missing tomorrow's game. Bleh. I want to see Daisuke!

[ blood and whiskey ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:43 PM

I miss seeing Dice-K! I haven't seen him in foreveerrr.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:44 PM

(looking at schedule)...the only one I'll definitely be able to catch in its entirety is the game this Sunday afternoon. I'll probably check in at times tomorrow afternoon and MAYBE will listen to the Saturday night game -- 9:05 is doable as long as it doesn't turn into a marathon. But 10:10 starts? I'll have to say hi and bye.

The first game at a normal time will be on Manny's birthday, by the way!

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:45 PM

Are you in class tomorrow, Liza?

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:46 PM

Sadly, yeah. School, then a 4:00 softball game, so there's exactly no possibility I'd catch the game. Fun.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:46 PM

Bah -- I have to miss a week from Sunday (or part of it) because the first haircut appointment I could get (desperately needed) is at 1:00 that day.

Awwww, Pleats. :-(

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:47 PM

Fun? No, NOT fun! Ah well, school will be out soon enough, yes?

C'mon Manny...

[ blood and whiskey ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:47 PM

..this guys name is Gobble?
(chuckles immaturely)

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:48 PM

School gets out June 20 for me.

And a week from Sunday is my birthday! (/little kid)

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:48 PM

Or not... :-(

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:52 PM

b&w, the WRKO announcers are having lots of fun with Gobble's name.

Liza, I've been in the South so long that I'm ALMOST used to school getting out in early May and starting in early August! When I was growing up in NY June 20 was about par for the course, and school started the Wednesday after Labor Day.

Nothing "little kid" about a birthday -- happy early birthday!

Now that was weird...Papi stole a base but it didn't count because of Mikey's K.

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 9:56 PM

We usually go by a schedule like your NY one--the week after Labor Day, we're back in school, and sometime between June 15 and 25, we leave for summer vacation.

And thanks. :) I'm asking for a #24 jersey (home whites--and no name, dammit!) and a copy of Lowell's book. (Though tickets to McCoy or Hadlock--or Fenway--wouldn't be bad, either!)

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:05 PM

I think the Labor Day to June schedule is pretty standard in the urban areas up Northeast. The rationale for August to May down here historically had to do with having to help on family farms and I think also with the intense Southern heat where the old schools had no A/C. Nowadays neither are as much of a concern but it's just tradition here.

A #24 jersey...(drooling)...hope you get it! And Lowell's book. AND tickets! Your interests are in the right place for sure! :-)

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:06 PM

So are folks here going to try to catch the late games this coming week? Or will it be "catch up on game news the next day" like me?

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:08 PM

Aw, Coco... nice shot by Lugo though.

I'm dying for an actual jersey. I have 4 player shirts (blue Papelbon, blue Ramirez, red Buchholz, red Ellsbury--oh, plus my old blue Damon one from '03 that I still can't bear to throw out), but I don't have an actual jersey. I want one SO badly.

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:11 PM

I'll watch if I can. I don't usually get to sleep until about 1 even with the 7:05 starts, so it makes no sense to skip the late games.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:12 PM

I would LOVE a jersey or a batting practice shirt. I have a couple-three player shirts and am aiming to get a couple more. But the jerseys and etc. are just SO expensive...way out of my budget right now.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:14 PM

LOL about the Damon shirt. I still have a couple of shirts from my old days as a NYY fan that I don't want to part with. They have definitely deteriorated to loungewear status, though, so nobody really sees them.

Awwww, Pleats. I was hoping...

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:18 PM

I usually go to bed sometime in the 11:00 hour on weeknights, but if I'm not careful that can easily become 12-something. My job is stressful enough that I can't really push it that late for more than a couple of nights, because I get too irritable when I'm sleep deprived. So...what I'll have to do next week, most likely, is get myself all ready for bed, listen to a couple-three innings, and then do my best to tear myself away from it and go to bed. (sigh)

The one upside is that I'll be able to get some other stuff done around the house in the evenings and catch up on my e-mails.

So they're talking about it raining hard at Fenway. Didn't know that was in the forecast. Good thing it's the 9th!

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:18 PM

I can't bear to look at the thing, but it's the first piece of baseball anything I ever got, so I can't bear to throw it out either. I totally loved Damon, so I almost cut it to shreds when he signed with the Yanks, but I decided to save it and there's no way I'm ever throwing it out.

[ blood and whiskey ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:18 PM

-hey, random question, but has anyone been to Gettysburg? Because I'm making my trek to Washington D.C. on Saturday, and I'm planning on staying overnight on the way, so I was wondering whether or not Gettysburg would be a nice place to spend the night...

(/another random)

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:19 PM

It doesn't seem like it's raining too hard at Fenway, but it's definitely coming down here...

I nearly fall asleep at school after particularly late nights (say, the no-no), but I never go to sleep earlier. Shows how well I learn from experience.

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:21 PM

B&W, you should talk to Steph! Her college is in that area (at least, I think so).

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:23 PM

b&w, I wish Steph were here -- she could answer your question about Gettysburg. Yes, that's where she goes to school. I've been there just once and it was lovely. Fields and historical sites is what I remember.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:24 PM

Liza, when I was in school (h.s. and college) I used to stay up really late too. I had trouble staying awake in early classes in college, so made a point to never take a class that was earlier than 10:00 unless I had no choice in the matter.

[ Liza ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:26 PM

Sounds like me when I get to college. If I had nothing to do at all during days, I'd have a 2AM-to-noon sleep schedule. That'd be perfectly fine with me. :P

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:29 PM

Okay...I am going to be sensible and start getting ready for bed.

Liza -- good luck with your softball game. Everyone else, I'll stop by tomorrow's gameday thread at some point. Other than that...who knows, with the road trip? Sunday afternoon for sure!

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 21, 2008 10:31 PM

P.S....Liza, my experience was that freshman year I didn't have much choice in the matter. I had 8:00 classes and dreaded them, and sometimes went on 4 hours of sleep. Once I got to the point where I had a little more leeway with electives, it was all good!

Sounds like you're a night owl like me! :-)

[ LifelongSoxFan ] says:
on May 21, 2008 11:04 PM

Hey, checking in real quick....thanks for the Mt. Rushmore, Liza...you ROCK...no pun intended!
I'm busy getting ready to head to the Bay State for Memorial Day weekend with my family. I'M COMING HOME!!!!!!

[ Texas Gal ] says:

Anyone who's around for the day game - I decided to recycle last night's thread, since it didn't get too long and unwieldy.

[ ecl1958 ] says:

Thanks, Texy! I'm just going to poke my head in now and then...work and all that stuff, ya know! :-O

Thanks, Texy. I'm here. Yay!

[ Ian ] says:

[ Erin ] says:
on May 22, 2008 1:33 PM

Hey Texy and everyone else!

[ Jane ] says:
on May 22, 2008 1:34 PM

I finally caved and picked up a month's worth of MLB.tv. I had heard some bad things about it and was initially skeptical. But so far, it's been great for me.

I've watched Lester's no-hitter ... more than once.

[ jules ] says:
on May 22, 2008 1:37 PM

Hey everyone!

I hope you feel better, Ian.

I'm having quite a day at work today. I love seeing the deputy chief's name on caller id ;-)

Go Sox!

[ Jane ] says:
on May 22, 2008 1:50 PM

The more I watch him, the more I realize I don't hate Kevin Cash. I mean, I love Tek. I grow ill thinking of a Tek-less team. But, yeah, alright. Cash doesn't bug me. Might be a less than popular opinion, but yeah.

Dicey-K. Yowzah.

[ jules ] says:
on May 22, 2008 2:07 PM

Come on Dice!

Jane, I agree. I can't imagine a Tek-less team, but he can't play forever. Cash seems to be doing a good job.

[ Jane ] says:
on May 22, 2008 2:12 PM

Cash seems confident. Assertive, even. There was an article a while back that talked about him picking up something in Wakefield's crazy-ass knuckleball delivery. He addressed and they all worked with Farrell to correct the problem.

That bodes well for him.

But... Viva La Tek.

[ Erin ] says:
on May 22, 2008 2:15 PM

Alright J.D!

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 22, 2008 2:16 PM

Well how about that -- I certainly checked in at the right time, didn't I? :-D

[ Jane ] says:
on May 22, 2008 2:16 PM

"Grand Slam. JD Drew."

... I will never tire from hearing that. I might make it my ringtone.

[ jules ] says:
on May 22, 2008 2:17 PM

JD! Grand Slam!

I love the ESPN GameCast showing a baseball going....going...gone!

I've got so much work to do! Gets in the way of the game!

heeheee

[ Erin ] says:
on May 22, 2008 2:18 PM

I'm still mad at myself for missing Game 6 of the ALCS. But at least I have video of the Drew's grand slam.

[ jules ] says:
on May 22, 2008 2:18 PM

Great point, Jane. I remember reading that, too.

[ Jane ] says:
on May 22, 2008 2:19 PM

Lugo "adjusting himself" makes me never want to eat food again.

[ jules ] says:
on May 22, 2008 2:22 PM

I'm taking an early lunch, closing the door, and "watching" the game. I wish I could take a 3-hour lunch ;-)

[ jules ] says:

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 22, 2008 3:15 PM

Just checking back in for a moment -- is Lugo's running off today or something? What's with the caught stealing and thrown out at home? I can't see the game so don't know what happened there.

[ jules ] says:
on May 22, 2008 3:24 PM

Hi ecl, I was wondering the same thing. I'm not watching the game, just tracking it on GameCast, so don't know. I wonder if he's pushing harder to make up for his errors? I don't know.

I'm completely overwhelmed with work and I just want to watch the game. No more goofing off, eh?

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 22, 2008 3:36 PM

I've got Gameday open as well as this thread, but am just peeking in to check the play by play rather than actually trying to follow the game. Too much to do -- right now I'm transcribing really boring letters to doctors. (yawn)

About Lugo, I did read within the last couple of days that he's likely putting a lot of pressure on himself because of Cora taking over in the late innings, among other things.

[ Ian ] says:
on May 22, 2008 3:48 PM

Papi hit a ball down the first base line that hit the bag and went straight up in the air. Lugo was on second and sent home. Grudzielanek made a great throw to get Lugo at thet plate.

[ Jane ] says:
on May 22, 2008 3:52 PM

Gaaaaaah, I kind of hate hearing that about Lugo. For seflish reasons, naturally. Because then I feel like a bad fan for bitching him. And starting that guerilla style, grassroots campaign to switch his official number from 23 to E6. Up to sixty-four signatures.

But now I feel like scuuuuum.

Just, ... do good things, Looogie. Please? I do want to believe in you. I do. Just... blah.

[ jules ] says:
on May 22, 2008 3:53 PM

Hi Ian, hope you're feeling better.

Thanks for the update!

[ jules ] says:
on May 22, 2008 3:55 PM

LOL, Jane! That's funny...64 signatures. hmmmm...some Photoshopping might be in order (not that I have time)

PLEATS!

:: goes back to work ::

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on May 22, 2008 4:00 PM

Well, Jane, for some unknown reason I have a soft spot for little ol' Lugie...except when he makes errors or GIDP, of course (then I get mad at him just like everyone else). So I'm rooting for him to do good things too. Please feel free to hate me for doing so. ;-)

[ ecl1958 ] says:
