AAaah, that's better.
Thanks to Ian for the kind offer to hang there, but no one else had commented and I've never liked being the first kid on the dancefloor.
Two observations:
1. Youk cannot be stopped.
2. This inning is not going well.
I figured that was the problem with no comments there so far but I wasn't going to push it. Plus having to switch sites in the middle of a convo is no fun.
The radio said Jed's smiling like crazy in the dugout.
I sure wish I could see that (hint, hint).
But really, I'm sure Steph would die to see that, which means it isn't just for me...
Ok, Ian, take your time.
Sorry if I souned kind of demanding...I was kind of excited then.
Seriously, don't miss any of the game to go do that. It should be on Game Day in a few minutes, and the smiling video will give me something to look forward to for the morning!
No worries. It's just a pain to start the DVR on here and then restart it. It means unplugging the cable and putting it back in. restarting the program.
Shawn, here's a quote from Jacoby explaining everything:
"I started doing it in Portland, just to keep my arm warm. I've never played baseball where it was so consistently cold for the first month. We had a foot and a half of snow the first couple of weeks. It's just a sleeve, not a shirt. It felt comfortable for me, so it just became part of my daily routine in Portland and continued in Pawtucket."
BTW I've observed that the long sleeves are separate pieces that they slip onto their arms - I caught Youk coming out onto the field, sleeves in hand, as he was finishing getting dressed.
Poor Steph. the article about JEB staying was misleading because it appears Jed's getting a plane ticket back to Rhode Island tomorrow unless Lugo is going to be out for a few days.
"He looked great," said Casey, who went 1-for-2, including a double and two runs scored.
"He'll be a big plus if he can continue to do that stuff. He's Bartolo Colon, a former Cy Young Award winner. He's got great stuff. When I looked up and he was throwing 97 and 95, that's going to play in the big leagues."
ahh poor lugo. maybe it'll knock some sense, or some fielding ability, into him. Never fun getting bumped in the head though Wow Go Lowell way to help out the fantasy team! Woot!
I'm doing PreCal homework. I figured I'd try to finish all of my HW today so I can watch tommorow's game on ESPN without having to multi-task, but I don't think that's going to happen.
They should make it illegal to give homework during AP Exam week...my brain still isn't functioning properly.
Having browsed a few LJ journals of the regulars here, I must say I only wish that my writing skills had been that good when I was 16, 17. Pretty impressive.
Was it good, Ellen? I'm definitely getting it when I finish Papi's book. (The reason Papi's bio is = taking me so long to read is because it's in Spanish...Yes, I know that's weird, but I've always wanted to read a book in Spanish, so this seemed like the perfect one to try).
Wow, nj, that's ambitious, reading the book in Spanish! I have a vague memory from high school of reading actual French lit in French class. Can't remember anymore if I was able to comprehend it or not.
I'm reading Papi's book (in English, forgot to mention that), "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfeld (sooo good), and SI's "Great Baseball Writing." Hee.
ECL, I can pretty much understand everything (and there's always a translation dictionary for what I don't know). I'm taking Spanish III now, but I'm probably going to skip to Spanish V next year because it's AP and I want to take the exam at the end of the year.
Actually, I'm listening to tonight's game in Spanish right now (don't ask why...I seriously have no idea).
They're saying "El Animal" again! (If you don't understand that, earlier in the year the Spanish announcers were shouting "El Animal!" and then we figured out that's what they call Papelbon.)
nj, believe it or not, although I don't speak Spanish, at my job I recently took on the task of entering our Spanish patients' history forms into their medical records (I already enter the English ones). They fill out the forms and I sit there with an on-line translator program and my knowledge of French (and some Italian) and piece it all together. I don't know the grammar, of course, but I actually can figure it out. One of these days I'll learn Spanish for real.
Liza, are the classes just a semester long or something? I don't get how there's a Spanish V when high school doesn't last five years, And actually, if you're just getting ready to turn 15, it's amazing that you'd be thinking AP already. When I was in school that was reserved for junior and senior years.
Ecl, I started taking Spanish in seventh grade. I took Spanish I in seventh, Spanish II in eighth, skipped Spanish III, and now I'm taking IV. Next year, I'll take Spanish V, and there's either a Spanish VI or the AP course.
I'm taking APUSH (AP US History) next year, though.
Liza, half my friends took AP US. They just took the exam and good luck, dude. I can't imagine, I hate history! Hate it so much, I took it over the summer just so I didn't have to take it this year.
For those wanting the JEB home run video and his afterglow from the dugout, it will be up at around 9 AM tomorrow morning or so. Maybe earlier at 8 AM but more likely 9.
OK since this is my new favorite departure line. I'm off like Britney Spears underwear when she was crazy.
I loved APUSH this year, Liza. I took AP Euro, too, but I had a great teacher for US so I liked it a million times more. The AP exam for US wasn't actually that bad, but it's a lot of stuff to remember.
Liza, that's pretty darned impressive. I had forgotten about starting foreign languages early. My school started in sixth grade on a limited basis. By the time I finished 10th grade it was counted as three full years. I stopped after that because I couldn't stand the French teacher.
How did you get to skip Spanish III? Really far ahead of the game?
Sounds like you go to a pretty advanced school to be taking APUSH in what, 10th grade? Ours was in 11th.
Same at my school, ecl; I'm taking APUSH this year as a junior. The best part of the class, though, is because we already finished learning everything for the exams we get to watch movies for the rest of the year.
And no, half my class skipped Step III--Step II was really a combination if I, II, and III, so we basically learned the same thing with the exception of some verb tenses. And yeah, my school's great, but I think the public schools around here also offer APUSH for tenth.
Liza - aha! Didn't know you were in private school. That explains it. And of course, you're in a different state (I grew up in NY) and no doubt curriculums have changed since I was in school.
Yeah, I thought I was going to die yesterday because I had both exams, but (somehow) I managed to survive. I didn't get to eat lunch between the two, either; all I had was a granola bar while walking from one room to the next. Hopefully, it will be worth it, though, if I get good scores.
Liza, from what I've heard about the state of public schools nowadays, I would think that private schools are better, and that's why students go to them.
Next year, I'm taking AP Calculus, AP English Lit., and maybe AP Computer Science. If the teacher lets me, I'll take AP Span. V, but if not, I'll take Honors Spanish IV. I'm also taking Honors GALRE (Government and Law Related Experiences).
So, yeah, I'm gonna have a lot of homework next year.
nj, I don't have any kids, but I hear so much bad about public schools. I feel very fortunate that I went to school when I did and where I did. It was a public school, but happened to be ranked among the very best in the country. Sad to say, when I went out to look for a teaching job elsewhere in NY State, I learned very quickly what a huge difference there was between my school and a lot of the others. By the time I got done with my job search I decided not to go into teaching after all. It was that bad. And schools have gone downhill since then. You would not believe the lack of literacy among high school graduates here in North Carolina. It's really sad.
I'm not going to be valedictorian. Seriously, there are a few people at my school taking more APs than that (counting the AP science classes as two because they're two periods long).
I won't be at the top, but I should be pretty high up there...
The public schools where I am are a mixed bag. The public high school in my city has great honors programs, but the rest of the school is pretty bad and there's a lot of bad non-academic stuff, too--teen pregnancy and suicides and all that fun stuff. There's one nearby that has a lot of really great programs, though, and a great community.
My school is just great, though. It has a 100% graduate college attendance rate. I think three seniors in this year's graduating class (of about 50) got into Williams, for example...
Jolie, I'm staying as far away from AP sciences as possible. I like science and all, but (here, at least) the AP sciences are two periods long! For some reason, my school only offers Stat as A-level.
I was more giving you a compliment than making a serious prediction about your class ranking, but still...it sounds like you're moving in rarified air as far as your scholastic accomplishments. Kudos to you!
nj, I'm predicting that I'm gonna fail Bio haha. I took it as a curriculum I class this year, so that should help. And for us, it's 4 periods. I can't imagine learning so much in just 2?!
and I think you're speaking to me, but yes, I'm a junior :)
Liza, your school sounds somewhat like mine was. We were a public school that seemed much like a private school. My class was around 200 and we had a 97% college attendance rate. Lots of folks went Ivy League.
Hey gals...I'm over and out. For some reason I'm very tired this evening, so I'm actually going to go to bed early...the better to be all revved up for tomorrow night's game. ESPN here we come! Y'all be well and enjoy the rest of your nights.
According to Jed talking on NESN right now, he didn't even know the ball was gone until he reached home. He just ran the whole way around the bases because he couldn't see an ump making the sign or anything. D'aww!

Hooray! I was feeling homeless there for a while.
