I won't be around tonight. I'm taking my husband and daughter out for his birthday: 50's diner for some burgers, then bowling and laser tag.
The gift I got for the kidlet to give him: Sox/A's tickets for the end of the month. *I* can't wait! (note to Tito: PLEASE play Jacoby on the 23rd, a certain 12-year old is just dying to see him!)
Thanks! He wanted to do something fun, heeheee...laser tag is a blast.
The Oakland Coliseum is about as ugly as a ballpark can be, but it's still a lot of fun to see the Sox play. If you're ever out west, go to ATT Park (SF Giants) because it's beautiful and you can see the bay.
Hey all...once again I just got home from work, much relieved that I get two whole days away from the place. I haven't even started getting dinner together so will be listening to the broadcast as I do so, then joining y'all after awhile.
Hey, ecl! I'm just finishing up my how-to-make-a-userpic thing for you right now. It's really long, though, (about three and a half pages in Microsoft Word), so I probably won't be able to post it as a comment. Can I e-mail it to you, maybe as an attachment?
If you're going to place blame on anyone this inning, place it on Ellsbury for not hitting the cutoff man since the next guy grounded out (which may have been a doubleplay).
Whoops -- still haven't had dinner. Had to check back, though.
nj: Yes, mailing it as an attachment would be fine. I have Open Office, so Word should be usable. My regular e-mail addy is FaithD923@aol.com. Just please put something obvious in the subject line so I know what it is!
Liza: I know you've been busy, that's why I haven't mentioned it. I don't know anything about designs. Red is always good, or you can look at my page and see what you think coordinates well. Manny is my favorite, and as Papi is the other half of the tandem, he's certainly high on the list.
Youk steals? Yeah!
Okay, gonna go fix some supper for real now. Will be back after awhile.
Ian- that's almost word for word what my dad said during the commercial break. not that you really remind me of my dad, just in the fact you both know a lot about baseball and stuff.
fc- I completely agree! ("I'm as disgruntled with Lugo's performance as the next guy, but turning on our own for fun? It's not fun, it's aggravating and sad.")
So speaking of how plays are scored: at a recent game, after Youk singled and the runner who had been at first was thrown out at 2nd, the scoreboard told me that Youk had "reached on FC."
Insert punchline here.
I won't share my reaction but you can probably guess. ;)
Kevin Youkilis reached on wild pitch by Boof Bonser on a strikeout and then proceeded to steal second base. Drum roll: It was Boston's 21st consecutive stolen base, which according to Elias, is the most bases stolen consecutively by a Red Sox team ever since it became an official statistic in 1920.
Bethie, it rained a little bit last night, not even 1/4 inch, though. We have a severe T-storm watch going right now. How about down your way? Scary about that tornado in the Greensboro area.
This is pretty much my first year getting favorites from other teams. I know it sounds stupid, but other years I was like "red sox, red sox, red sox" and I didn't really care about anyone else. Right at the beginning of this year (the first game actually) I started seeing them all as individual people and players. Last year the only person from another team I liked was Vlad. Now I'm actually getting other favorites from teams. I'm kind of choosing my favorites as the series go on with different teams we face. Last time (Tigers): Curtis Granderson. This time (Twins, in case you forgot): Joe Mauer.
The only person we don't agree on is Grady Sizemore. I'm not like in love with him or emotionally attached or anything, but I do like him. Though it's kind of annoying because he's a pretty good looking guy and there are all these girl fans that are like "OMFG!!!!1 he's the only reason I even watch baseball" and there have been things like "Grady Size-is-more" and it's kind of annoying.
Okay, someone needs to take Lugo behind the shed and kick the shit out of him. Where can I sign up? Dammit butterfingers.
We had a tornado touch down about 3 miles from the house last night, and we had hail earlier tonight and are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 1 AM. Guess spring has officially sprung around here.
OMG Bethie, 3 miles? SCARY! I didn't know your area got them last night too. One perk of living up here is that the mountains break up severe storm lines, so we almost never have tornadoes, and any that do come through are barely worthy of the name.
nj: Thanks! Soon as I eat, I'll check my e-mail. Dinner's almost ready. I definitely need to make sure the attachment will open!
Call me a softie, but I kinda felt bad or Lugo there. That was just a really unlucky error. However, I still have no pity for him on the Detroit one. That one sucked.
One more pre-dinner note: I wish I had time to watch lots of games on TV...I would probably have more favorite players on other teams. My list is fairly short. More on that after I eat.before.I.faint!
According to general manager Bill Smith, Pat Neshek is expected to miss at least three months and may be sidelined for the remainder of the season with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.
Smith said that Neshek won't be allowed to throw for at least three months and added that getting him healthy in time for spring training is the Twins' current goal. Losing Neshek is a huge blow to the Twins' bullpen, as he's gone 11-5 with a 2.91 ERA and 142/37 K/BB ratio in 120 2/3 career innings. Matt Guerrier and Juan Rincon will split setup duties in front of Joe Nathan.
the Portland Beavers are loosing 8-1 in the top of the 5th... (I never even knew there was a AAA team called the Beavers, but when I saw "Portland" I thought it was the Sea Dogs and then I realized it wasn't, because the Sea Dogs are AA. By the way- the Sea Dogs lost 7-3)
Yeah, that's 11 on the season. I think his goal is to exceed his jersey number by the All-Star break. I hope not though. I hope he sneezes and all the Bad comes out. Let's just hope he uses a tissue. (I'm trying this sarcastic-funny thing. It's not my natural element, so if it's not funny then just ignore me. I'm really not a funny person...)
So I've been wolfing down the tacos with a smile progressively broadening across my face, both because I finally feel human again and because our guys are making me happy right about now!
I'm wondering what the chances are that a guy with Lugo's salary would be send to AAA for remedial work.
Ian, I have to confess, I don't know enough about the business side of baseball to know what "options" are. The DL would probably be a little bit too obvious. Maybe a head-clearing break is in order. Either that or a dugout exorcism. Hey, it worked for Papi.
An option is when they're sent down. You hear about players being "optioned" or the team "exercising an option" on a player, that's when they go to the minors.
Thank you, Liza and Ian, for the educational materials on baseball transactions (bookmarked to be read later this weekend).
Jacoby-run-like-deer, you amaze me.
nj: If you're still here, the document came through just fine. At first glance...I already have several hundred saved pics on my computer, so that's one major step accomplished. More education awaits.
Jacoby Ellsbury and Jed Lowrie are the 1st Red Sox teammates from Oregon prior to September 1 since 1950, when RHP Jim McDonald and INF Johnny Pesky were both on the roster.
(This is in response to ecl (or should I say Faith) saying "Choco, that is some kind of hair. And I see he and Lugo are from the same place in the DR." at like 10:30. But I was eating some dessert and paying attention to the game instead of writing it.)
I love the Dominican Republic! If I could go anywhere in the world, some of my picks would be: Florida (to see my big brother), Oregon (any guesses as to why?), Dominican Republic, or Germany (heritage and all).
I'm planning on going to the DR on a missionary trip sometime soon. It's the only reason I take Spanish. While I'm working on Spanish I just keep remembering why I wanted to learn it in the first place (to go to the DR). I have pictures of some Dominican players in my book, too. :)
Well Di. Yes I'm asking you. You're in Jacksonville, LOL.
The tie thing went well. I wore my Jerry Garcia tie that was hanging up in the closet already tied. It was buried in there. had to do some searching for it.
And for those of you who are going to ask (the youngens under 20ish) who Jerry Garcia is, he was the lead singer of the Grateful Dead, who by the way is one of the greatest concerts I've ever seen.
The other being Jane's Addiction live in St. Petersburg.
I didn't know who Jerry Garcia was, but I do know who the Grateful Dead are, and I knew they had ties, too. One of my 8th grade teachers had a Grateful Dead tie, and his son (who was in my class) had one too. It was these mummies walking around. Pretty funny...
Choco -- your book? Are you writing a book or something?
I too would love to visit the DR...I get chills just thinking about the number of awesome players who were born there. And the people of the DR are just so pretty. Something about the widely divergent gene pool, I guess.
I didn't see him hurt anything. He's doing a good job controlling himself, unless it's in the clubhouse. He didn't swear or anything. I'm proud of him. :)
Pap looked like he was working on a slow burn there - which I expect to be followed by an even greater explosion, probably in the locker room off-camera.
since when does Papelbon throw his splitter this much???? He can blow his fastball by anyone in baseball, thats why he has a sick K/9 ratio. And he did it the other night against the Tigers, falling in love with his splitter. And tonight against Carlos Gomez and Mike fucking Lamb, he can't blow them away with a fastball???? Less dunkin donuts commercials, more fastballs!
I know Texy is running late with her post today so if y'all need a place to chat, use my afternoon post until she gets the post up. If you don't and want to wait, it's cool.

Jeez. Sexson gets six games for yesterday's brawl.
