Someone's Getting Testy

Julio "E6" Lugo (or should that be "E6E6E6E6E6E6E6E6E6E6"?) has had enough.

He's tired of people talking about his 10 (!) errors so far this year. He doesn't want to talk about leading the league in errors, two more than the next guy on the list (Edwin Encarnacion has 8). Don't ask him any questions about his error in the ninth last night, and certainly don't bring up his 3-error game in Toronto just a short while ago. He just doesn't understand why anyone cares about all that.

"I don't care, but sometimes it would be nice to say something positive," [Lugo] said. "But all the time it's negative things, you know? Sometimes, you know, people should say something that's positive. But every time it's something negative . . . bring it up, bring it up, bring it up. Why?

"I understand you (the media) are going to write whatever you want . . . but I come here every day and bust my ass . . . if things don't work out sometimes, that's the way it's going to be. You understand? But sometimes you bring up the same things . . . You get tired of that."

Psst, Lugo! You want to know why people keep talking about you making error after error (after error, etc. times 10)? Here's a hint: 4 years for $36,000,000. If you're gonna cash the checks, I'm sorry to break it to you- but you're gonna also have to answer questions about small, tiny things like LEADING THE LEAGUE IN ERRORS.

And it's not like you're coasting on a groundswell of goodwill, either. Remember this? You're not a rookie phenom pitcher who consistently throws well, and had a rough outing. You're not a lights-out closer who notched a very rare BS. You're certainly not a twice-over World Series batting juggernaut and clutch hitter who hit a batting skid for a few weeks. You're a guy who's getting paid a shit-ton of money, who's been mediocre (or worse) at the plate and downright horrific in the field. Please quit acting so pissy because you're getting called out for sucking when you are, you know, sucking it up at SS.

And don't front like it's just us, either. It's not often that a player's Baseball Reference page is sponsored by a rival team's fans, who celebrate the fact you take up a Sox roster spot. To wit:

Oddly enough, I think most folks have been pretty lenient with you-- highly unusual for this town, as you well know. But Lugo... you're driving otherwise sane and rational folk to acts of violence. Either quit with the sucking, or quit with the attitude... otherwise someone's liable to go all Josh Beckett profanity-laced-tirade on your ass.

Hat tip to Joe in Philly at Soxaholix for noticing Lugo's BR sponsorship.

Well said, Texy, well said. That was a frustrating inning. I don't remember the last time I yelled that loudly at the TV when he made that error.

Seriously, you lead the league in errors, you're going to hear about it. For that money, suck it up, Lugo. Suck it up.

Paps wasn't his usual lights-out, but that sure didn't help.

I tried so hard to be positive about Lugo, I really did. I was patient. I wanted him to be good and I wanted to support him.

But last night I was done.

Okay, I know this won't be popular, but he was responding to the fact that the reporter asked him to talk about his errors in that April game against the Jays.

And you know what? I won't defend his performance, really.

But I also know that he was probably being pissy because he knew he did a crappy job and that everyone hates him. That sure as hell would make me defensive and pissy.

So: no excuses... totally agree... but acknowledging where the behavior is coming from.

I do think a lot of this is rooted in his payday. Fans are very very very very VERY touchy about players who, in the end, appear incredibly overpaid (see: Crisp, Coco and Drew, JD). Would we be so down on these three and their performance and injury problems if we weren't paying, say, $28,000 per game in Coco's case?

Anyway, yeah he had a disappointing performance and it made me angry at him, but the truth is, I can't believe he doesn't feel like shit about it, and my hating him doesn't make a bit of difference... just leaves me pissy.

So... one of our players is struggling. But he's a member of our team. For my own mental health, I need to take the approach of: "a member of my much loved team is struggling and getting picked on, but I support him because he wears the uniform and that's part of being a Sox fan."

I'm a huge softie, I know. But I just have to give him the benefit of the doubt on a personal level, that he's well aware of what people think, that he's feeling crap about it, and that I'd want my support if I was in his shoes.

And that ends today's Mr. Rogers flashback session, boys and girls.

(doesn't just duck, but actually HITS THE FREAKIN DECK to avoid what's coming)

I don't hate him. I don't blame those that do, but I don't. But the prissy "get off my case, you have no reason to be asking me these questions" schtick doesn't fly.

Sack up, Lugo. You don't get the benefit of a multi-million dollar payday without having to answer some annoying questions when you suck. I have no sympathy for the attitude.

Well said.
I've been trying to put into words why I'm a bit on the angry side at Lugo, and I think that did it.
If this was a one-game thing, like how Paps was, I could forgive him.
But it's clearly been an on-going thing.

While Lugo MAY have a point, saying something now after sucking/effing up a game/not doing well is a stupid thing to do. It just makes you come across as stupid and whiny.

I swear the Red Sox can NEVER have a good shortstop, huh?

Someone remind me again why we didn't hold on to Orlando Cabrera.

[ Piney61 ] says:

sda -- Because if we did, we wouldn't have Jed Lowrie or Jacoby Ellsbury. :) Also, there were rumors about Cabrera having some off-the-field issues, treating clubhouse fellows like crap adn such.

Here's another hint for Julio: people will stop asking you about your errors when you stop making them, especially in the ninth inning of a one-run game. Whining makes you look like an asshole, especially when you got a bunch of flack from the fans and media when you were an automatic out for most of last year.

I think most of you here know that I've been soft on Lugo all along (that is, since I started paying attention late last season). However, I was royally pissed at him about last night and still am. On the other hand, what mhc, MPH says makes a whole lot of sense. Am I any less pissed at Lugo today? Not really. But I know he must feel really, REALLY bad about what happened, and although it's with mixed feelings at this point, I'm finding myself having a hard time picking on him because he does, after all, wear the uniform.

[ Linda ] says:

In fairness to Julio, he did answer the question about Wednesday's game graciously. “It was a soft-hit ground ball and I thought I had a chance to go to second,” Lugo said, softly but clearly. “I was a little overaggressive. Instead of getting one out, I was trying to get the lead runner and I bobbled the ball.”

To me, whoever it was that followed up with a question about previous errors was just trying to stir the pot. Given the timing, (Sox fresh off a loss and Lugo's error) it was a bogus question.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on May 9, 2008 9:02 AM

I don't think it was bogus at all. He is a highly-paid starter who continues to make a series of errors -- so people are going to want to ask about those errors.

I would consider it sloppy journalism if a reporter, charged with doing a story about Lugo's league-leading TENTH error, failed to ask him about those errors and tiptoed around him like some fragile doll.

[ Lyndsay ] says:

I don't care if he "feels badly' about his errors. He can take his dolly and his wet panties and go back to Tampa Bay and play badly there. this isnt Little League, where "everybody's a winner" - this is the Bigs, son, and if you can't take the heat, get out the kitchen!

Paps or someone should really slam his head into a car windshield. you know, like he did to that woman a while back. would serve him right.

and I'd like to add...what an ungrateful piece of sh-t. If any of us were that bad at OUR jobs, we'd be fired. does he realize this is his JOB? and that he's supposed to do well in order to keep it? and how lucky he is to have it in the first place?
