The Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays showed up for a brawl, and somehow a baseball game managed to break out. The official tally of carnage by the end of the dustup: 3 ejections (Coco Crisp, James Shields, Jonny Gomes), 1 missed haymaker, 1 cuff to the back of the head, and 50 sucker punches/girly hair pulls and face scratches. Elijah Dukes is so pissed he got traded away and missed all the action.

Here's a breakdown of all the brouhaha - with video clips of everything for those of you who missed it.
Step One: The History
This wasn't the first time the Sox and Rays have gotten into it. There's bad blood between the two clubs, and a simmering feud that dates back for almost a decade.

Step Two: The Buildup
Last night, Coco Crisp got into a shouting match with Rays manager Joe Maddon over Coco's hard slide into Rays second baseman Akinori Iwamura. But as Coco saw it, it was payback for earlier in the game when Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett placed his leg down to block second base as Coco slid headfirst into the bag.
"He put his whole knee in front of the bag, and it's not something you do as an infielder. You can do that, but that's shady," Crisp said. "And he's not a bad dude, but that's shady. It is what it is. You gonna hurt me, I'm going to come back and hurt you.""If I would have intended to injure I wouldn't have slid at all. I would have just ran him over like he was a catcher," Crisp said. "I went in hard to send a message. If I wanted to injure him, I would have jump-kicked his (butt). But I didn't do that.
"He put his knee down and injured me a little bit . . . if I really wanted to injure him, I could have. If Bartlett would have covered, might have been a little more dramatic."

Step Three: The Brawl
Rays pitcher James Shields decides that it's time for retribution against Coco for the hard slide from the night before... and drills Coco in the thigh during his first at-bat of the game (in the second inning). Unfortunately for Shields, Coco isn't one to take a HBP lightly. Even more unfortunately for Shields, when Coco charges the mound, Shields' Farnworth-esque directionless haymaker misses the mark by a mile - Coco's dad was a boxer, it's no surprise he's got moves like that.

Step Four: The Aftermath
In the clubhouse after the game, Coco pontificated on the beatdown.
I charged the mound. I feigned it like I was going to go to first base, just to get Navarro off me a little bit, and just charged the mound. He tried to hit me with a haymaker. He missed. I threw a punch. I pretty much missed. And the rest, went down to the ground like the scratches on my face were people trying to scratch like we were playing football or something, like little girls, trying to scratch out my eyes. I move one hand down, scratch me right here [points to scratch to the right of his nose].After that, people were trying to pull my hair like little girls. Instead of throwing some real punches or something like that. I'm down on the ground, I mean the fight's pretty much over baseball-term wise. You wanna come in late, and throw some extra blows and get your little blows in, that's cool. I'll cover up. It's all good, trying to pull some hair. It's all right. It was between me and Shields that time and everybody tried to get their little blows in I think even more he was unsure if he really wanted to hit me or not it seemed like, but cause he didn't really hit me hard.
Big dude, what's his name Jonny Gomes, he tried to come in, a hefty dude, tried to throw some blows but I think Navarro, I credit him. And actually I credit Shields, too cause, even though we went at it, he hit me in the leg. He didn't try to hit me in the head so that's good. He didn't like try to kill me. Then I ran out there, then he tried to hit me in the head, so that's the way to go [laughing]. It is what it is now. I say tit for tat, I think I got the worst of it because I'm running out there and they can get to me before our guys can get to me to help.

I think everyone saw this coming, after last night. You know it was planned, when there was pitchers warming up in the 1st inning in the Rays bullpen. That is not normal.
Did anyone notice, every time there is a fight, Beckett is always one of the first out there? I wouldn't mind having him on my side.
