I've got the pre-game on and the Sox are doing their Sox scholars presentation. Lucky kids! They interviewed the most adorable kid who wants to go to Harvard.
I love the unintentional hilarity of watching the players escort the kids out onto the field.
a) Dustin Pedroia is MAYBE six inches taller than his kid.
b) How would you feel if you found out you were going to walk out onto the field with a Red Sox player and then the player you were paired with was ... Javier Lopez?
c) None of them can ever figure out what to do in relation to their kid. Should I put my arm around them? Should I just pat them on the back? Manny Delcarmen solves this problem by holding hands with his kid, which is super endearing.
kelly- They had a segment on earlier in the week, I think, with Dustin visiting a bunch of disadvantaged kids and talking to them about baseball and stuff. At the end, the whole group stood together for a picture... and I think he MAYBE had 2 inches on the kids he was standing next to. I'm not one to go for the obvious height joke, but... HEE!
My local wunderground.com page currently shows temps in the upper 80s to low 90s at the various reporting stations. That pales in comparison to what Bethie is dealing with, though. The reporting stations down her way are showing as high as (are you ready for this?)....105 degrees with a heat index in the 110s. I fully expect to see reports of heat-related deaths in the Carolinas before this ends.
Part II, Erin: No it's not wrong. Funny thing...back when I was still a NYY fan and Damon was still in Boston I liked him very much (never did matter to me about rivalries). That ended right around the time he arrived in NY. Couldn't stand to look at him, actually, long before I switched sides!
Jessi: A high BA that probably all of us can cheer for (I would think) belongs to Albert Pujols. He's doing just superbly this year. I'm looking forward to the Sox/Cards on TV in a couple of weeks.
jules...Damon is not only a traitorous punk, he's also a jerk for the way he treated his first wife. And then married a plastic Barbie doll. I can't stand to look at her either.
A-Rod may be a punk and a weirdo, but he's one of the greatest baseball players to ever live. Damon is just a mediocre sellout with a bitch for a wife.
Erin, I'm sure "high maintenance" wives aren't unusual around the league -- it probably comes with the territory because unless they've been married since the minors or earlier, they're marrying into money and potentially the high life. In Michelle's case, though, mainly I'd call her "disgusting." (gee I'm so mean today...must be the heat)
This isn't fair... I live in Seattle so I hardly ever get to watch the Red Sox games on tv. I look forward to the Seattle series just so I can watch the games instead of relying on GameDay Audio, but for some reason, the game isn't on out here today. How strange?
I can't believe I just missed a Damon vs. A-Rod debate... I just have to say, while I can't stand either of them, I like A-Rod more of the two. Whenever I see Damon on TV I have to sit on my hands so I don't throw stuff.
Also, I'm melting. I went to a friend's graduation party earlier and I had to leave because I felt like I was going to pass out. I mean, I woke up early and it was boiling at 9 AM.
accuweather.com says it's 93 and feels like 100. I believe it.
I'm dubbing this week "Surreal Week," beginning with Thursday. Coco and the Rays get into it, Manny slaps Youk, Jacoby gets hurt, Cash pinch-runs, the Sox lose at home to the Mariners, one hit so far comes from Coco, and the other comes from Lugo (and nearly went over the Monster).
Jeez... 20 of 97 pitches from Bedard have gone to Pleats.
Drew is slugging like a mofo, Lugo hasn't made any errors and is hitting decently, Coco is tearing around the basepaths and smacking the ball. BIZARRO WORLD.
The little guy who got the ball was adorable. I just *love* kids at the ballpark. I need to go to another game! I wish the Sox were coming around again.
That was a good decision, Liza. Athletes have collapsed and died in cooler weather than this. Happened a few weeks ago in central NC. Athlete in his early 20s working out when the heat index was maybe in the low 90s.
Texy, we have wicked heat here, too. Not nearly the humidity, however. My daughter's school will keep them indoors for PE if it gets too hot or for poor air quality.
Kara, *I'm* jealous, too! GREAT seats. When I was at Fenway last year, we saw a ball roll up the screen, fall over the top, and land in someone's beer. We saw the beer splash, it was hilarious.
TG, that kind of heat is why I will probably never be able to visit my very favorite cousin, who lives in Houston. The weather as it exists down there is more than my body can handle (it's an MS-related issue). :-(
I know the old "it's not the heat, it's the humidity" saying is tired, but it is TRUE. 110 degree heat in Phoenix is WAY easier to take than 95 degree heat in Houston.
I could never live in Texas. I couldn't live anywhere where 100 degrees occurs outside of three months a year. If I can't get comfortable by putting on more or less clothing, I don't like it.
Well, except Greece. I went to Crete last summer and totally loved it. (/random)
Texy, it's a well-known saying in Sacramento, "At least it's a *dry* heat!"
Tired, but true. It's quite dry here and a lot easier to handle in the summer. I've been in Dallas and St. Louis in the summer. No thanks (I'd still rather be on the coast of Maine).
Ahh, TG...I'll have to see if I can visit the cuz during his winter break (he's a phys ed teacher/coach). 70 is a great favorite temp, any time of year!
I remember 90+ in San Diego being hard on me despite the low humidity. That was a darn sight better than 90+ in Virginia Beach, though. I became violently ill for a couple of days until I acclimated. I was miserable the entire time I was there (five-day family reunion).
I'll have to scan a photo of the best seats I've ever sat in for a baseball game. We were right above the third-base dugout at Busch Stadium in St. Loius. Fredbird, the mascot, had my brother's head in his beak. Of course, I was 12 and thought it was the funniest thing. ever.
Great job from the hill today! Masterson and the pen were on.
Wow, a whole evening ahead of me in which to get stuff done...and a night off. Guess I'll go try to be productive now. I've enjoyed it! Will see some of you in the usual places...and the rest of you Tuesday. :-D

Good morning!

Masterson today! I hope he has a great game.
