The Time Has Come... To Putt-Putt

It may be an off-day for most of us, but not for Captain America Jason Varitek. He's hosting his annual Celebrity Putt-Putt tourney tonight in Middleton to raise money for Saints Medical Center and Celebrities for Charity. Last year, several members of the team showed up to play through the (tiny) greens-- so we're counting on those of you who are going to report back tonight with photos and stories.

The best part of the event, though, has to be the cute-as-a-button commercial with Varitek and Jon Lester that's been showing on NESN. A couple of weeks ago, NESN also went behind the scenes to film a kind of "Making Of The Video" segment for that same commercial -- and to celebrate Tek's tourney, here's video of that:

Thanks for that "Making of the Video" segment - I missed it when it was shown on NESN. This confirms my contention that aside from the actual games, I can pretty much ignore the other Sox blogs and shows I follow because sooner or later everything I'd want to see shows up here.

Varitek Putt Putt was honestly, not very enjoyable for us at least. It was 2 1/2 hours to get there. The guys were a GOOD distance away (except Tek who was closer but not THAT close) and all they were doing was signing and taking photos with other fans who paid the big bucks to golf.

Players in attendance? Wake, Jacoby, Pap, Tek, and Coco. That I could see at least/got interviewed.

They didn't sign for the fans who were on the fence like we were. Tek signed for a few minutes (he gets a free pass, he was MOBBED towards the end with his little daughters which was awful and he was a trooper and signed), Pap signed a few things, and Jacoby signed a few things.

I? Was on the front of the fence, being quiet and taking photos, surrounded by people screaming for Jacoby. After a while he came DIRECTLY before me, signed for the kid who was completely star stuck next to me then took my ball and signed it!!! He paused and looked at me like "OMGISSHEGOINGTOSCREAM" and I, not a crazy, was like "Thanks!" HOWEVER. Being right in front of the boy means getting CRUSHED into the metal rail when ROWS of people push into you, throwing things in his face. He signed for a couple, polite as can be, then bailed. I don't at ALL blame him. I was telling Megan if he were smart, he'd stay clear of our section.

I would imagine it would have been LOADS more fun if you were golfing but it was hot and people were yelling for autographs the whole time, and it was in total a FIVE hour drive. Literally, no where. Didn't even look like Mass. We went to a 99 Restaurant and the guy was like, "Red Sox fans?!" Seriously, we were still IN MASS. Dude was SURPRISED.

So if it were closer, I'd go again. Maybe. My lifelong dream of getting Tek to sign something for me still stands.

I have a few photos (of Tek as he was the closest) and I can post them later :)

Varitek Celebrity Putt Putt was very enjoyable for me, probably because I was one of the golfers! If I was a spectator I definately wouldn't have enjoyed it that much.

I was so excited to meet the players! Varitek, Ellsbury, Wakefield, Timlin, Crisp, Cash, Papelbon, Lester, and Lopez were the only red sox players there tonight. Max Lane, a former Patriot was also there along with a couple red sox trainers. I was a bit dissapointed that I didn't get to see Manny or Papi but it was still a great time. I love Papelbon's accent & Jacoby is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous!

I'm from Saugus so the ride there was not long at all. I actually didn't pay a dime to go. My father's company was one of the sponsors at the event tonight so we got to golf free! I feel very lucky! When we first got there we all recieved giftbags which contrained a t-shirt, a rubix cube, a baseball, a booklet, and AN IPOD SHUFFLE!!! That was pretty cool.

All in all I had a blast tonight! I think it is great that Varitek set up this event. I also think its awesome that those guys came out here tonight on their day off to help out and raise money for the two charities. GO SOX! =)

Well I have to agree with Princess on this event from a spectators point of view. The set up was awesome. Tek's people really stepped it up this year. Last year was in a hockey rink and it was SO hot. This year was much more enjoyable, setting wise.

April named all the players that were there. Far less than last year. We were disappointed that Josh wasn't there, but not surprised since he's pitching tonight. Mike Lowell's absence really surprised us.

I wasn't there to get autographs, just pictures to share with my friends. The few guys that were there were put at holes that the spectators had no chance of seeing. My beef was if you had limited players, why not put them at the front holes so everyone could see them? Hell, Lopez was so far away he was practically in the trees.

I'll do it again next year. Probably because we had such a good time last year, even in that sweatbox. My pictures of Josh were so good last year. I was hoping the same for other players this year. Nada.

I still give Tek's people props. Other than the placing of the few players that came, they planned a great event.

I put some photos from Putt Putt up on my Flickr account. Click here!

I don't know who they had MC'ing the event, but it would have been MUCH more entertaining if they had Paps do it. And you know he would have volunteered.
