It's not like Bethie and I don't get a zillion Braves games down here, ya know? TBS, FSS...come on, doesn't FOX know that NC is already oversaturated and some fans may very well want to watch something else? Ugh. :::ticked off:::
This Manny mess is making me sad. I'm wondering if our Dominican contingent will be considerably smaller next year, as in just Papi (not that I don't love Papi, of course).
I remember seeing a picture from when Papi was tossed and had to be restrained. Even as angry as he was, he still had a half-smile on his face. He's just a big bucket of sunshine to the core.
Hey all, being at Fenway was beautiful last night, though we lost the game.
Ian, I know you think I'm nuts but it does seem to me that the Sox want rid of Manny being Manny. I know, his bat is nearly irreplaceable. I know it's nuts but maybe his antics just aren't worth it to the org. Crazy talk, ya think?
Few guys can rock the soul patch and get away with it, IMO.
It's hard for me to believe that I ever actually liked Johnny Damon. That was back before he left for NY, and oddly, at that point I was still a NYY fan. I remember feeling guilty for liking him...but I don't feel at all guilty for totally despising him now. LOL...
Johnny Damon was good for a little comic relief over the July 4th weekend during the play where the ball hit the top of the fence. It was sad he got hurt, but it was amusing to see him go head over heels.
"Seeing Johnny D. get injured gave me great pleasure. Won't lie - I hate that man." hahaha! My sentiments exactly. I seriously can't remember what I ever saw in him.
Just got in from work a little bit ago. Was supposed to go to a minor league game tonight, but too tired. Plus my friend couldn't go, so alone isn't much fun.
I loved Damon and his quirks (long hair, Cowboy-up attitude), but I agree with the "I can't believe I liked him" sentiment--he's not quirky, he's just a sellout.
:::makes mental note to ask cousin in NY what she thinks of Giambi's 'stache. He's been one of her faves for years. Pettitte too, which I can better understand.
ecl1958...I'm sure they were saying "hot" as in lately and not the whole season. They are actually right because in July including Pedroia's 3 at bats and Cano's 2 at bats so far today, Cano is hitting .377 with 3 HRs and 13 RBIs and Pedroia is hitting .376 with 1 HR and 10 RBIs. From the All-Star break to so far today, Cano has 17 hits in 33 at bats(BA .515) and Pedroia has 12 hits in 33 at bats(.364 BA)
The newest Nady, a boy, will be named Xavier, just like each generation of Nadys dating back to Xavier's great-great-great grandfather in France 150 years ago.
The Pirates' star right fielder is Xavier the sixth. His son will be Xavier the seventh.
I think that's really cool, actually, about the VII. My dad's family was like that with the name Nathaniel. Between the arrival of Nathaniel I to Long Island in 1668, and 1881, when my grandfather (John) was born, there were seven Nathaniels, unbroken save for one random Felix.
I thought the idea was to NOT put Justin in when there was a pressure situation? Guess I was wrong...first time he went in was a pressure situation, and he's got one here.
Jennifer... if you understand that then you should also understand that it's the whole history of the franchise that counts not just a couple years after 2000. So your analogy of .318>.269 over the season being better than .515>.364 after the All-Star break is the same as 26>7 over the existence of the franchise being better than 2>0 after the year 2000. By the way, weren't the Yankees like 7 games behind the Sox on the loss column like a month ago? they both have 45 losses now if things hold up :) LOL in all seriousness though, being a Yankees fan wouldn't be as fun and interesting without the rivalry we have with you guys. Don't get me wrong, I still hate you guys just as much you hate us.
Teams that are currently dominant always point to the last 10 years as the barometer of a team's success.
Teams that once used to be dominant, but who are dominant no longer, always point to the overall history as a barometer of a team's success.
This is the same across teams, across sports. This is always the argument.
BOTH sides are right, BOTH sides are wrong. It is ridiculous for Sox fans to disregard the entirety of Yanks' winning history. It is just as ridiculous for Yankees fans to ignore recent history in order to prove supremacy.
Which means, Texy, that we should hopefully all get along without malice. At least that's the way I like to live my life when it comes to sports rivalries. :)
A sports fan is not complete without a rival. It would not be half as fun to be a fan of the Padres or Marlins, who have only lukewarm divisional opponents to point to as a "rival".
Michigan is not the same without Ohio State.
Texas is not the same without Oklahoma.
The Cowboys are not the same without the Redskins.
The Red Sox are not the same without the Yankees.
UNC is not the same without Duke.
NC State is not the same without UNC
The Celtics aren't the same without the Lakers
Nebraska isn't the same without Oklahoma.
There's always that one team (maybe two or three) that your team HAS TO BEAT every time. But it's pointless to argue who's the "best" between rival teams--there are often far too many factors to consider, including whether you value recent or long-term success, like with the Sox and Yankees.
Certainly sports rivalries are great -- I'm well familiar with that from being a UNC fan. But I don't like when the major animosity becomes part of it. My sister and brother in law, when they still lived in the Triangle area of NC, used to tell me I wouldn't understand the UNC-Duke-NCSU hatefest because I don't live in that area (and it should be noted that she graduated from NCSU and he graduated from UNC, and his brother worked at Duke for a period of time!). But, as I told them, it's just not in my nature to "hate" the opponent. It's more like I root for MY team to win. I'm just weird that way. :::shrugs:::
(psst - the TX-OU rivalry is the third longest-running rivalry in the country. Texas and OU have played for well over a hundred years. Trust me on this - Texas IS Oklahoma's rival.)
Hasn't New York gotten on a tear after the all-star game for like, the past few years? The definitely did last year, because I remember everyone talking about it.
Just got home and not too thrilled with the score. Whose to blame?
Also if anybody is surprised about the Yankees resurgence then they likely haven't realized that they do this EVERY YEAR. They suck fo rthe first two months, start to pick it up with cookie cutter opponents in interleague then falter a little back to AL but then start to pick it up again and that then leads to some stroke of luck deal however big or small in which they trade crap on a stick for some decent players to plug in and then go on a mega run. It's like the Yankee Formula or something. It's so predictable it's grown tiresome to me.
Yeah they have... I dunno, I'm having trouble feeling optimistic about our guys lately. Without a doubt this is mostly projections from me hating my crappy job combined with some old-school Bostonian negativism, but I dunno, I don't like how much they're fighting. Don't get me wrong, I think they're amazing, but the other teams might just out-play them.
I asked my question before to see if this really was all my imagination going wild.
Texas has two rivals - A&M and OU. Michigan has Ohio State and Notre Dame. USC has UCLA and ND. OU has Texas and Okie State. Nebraska is just a conference foe.
Texas, I never disagreed with any Sox fans about the fact that for the last few years the Redsox have been the better team but no Redsox fans I've come across admits to the fact that the Yankees are an overall superior franchise and I was just voicing my opinion to Jennifer on how if you analyze a topic in a certain way then you should analyze another topic with the same mindset. You can't just change your views whenever it's convenient.
A favorite rivalry of mine as a college hockey nut: THE BEANPOT. If you aren't familiar, its Northeastern v. Harvard v. BC v. BU. It is a great time, since all the intracity animosities get to play out on the ice and in the stands for a few nights in February. Not the same scale, I know, but still lots of fun.
ecl none of my cousins who live in the Triangle are allowed to go anywhere but Carolina. Most of my aunts and uncles and cousins went to UNC with one exception. One of my uncles broke tradition by going to State.
yeah I have a crappy job. I basically just revamped my Life Plan so I didn't leave the job as I had originally planned, and now I'm trying to get a new one.
I have ONE TASK at this job, and it is a task I absolutely detest and am not very good at. Furthermore, instead of taking 24 hours per week (I work on 2 research projects part-time, making one FTE) it takes all 40.
McCarver: Shift in the balance of power to the Yankees...AHAHAHAHAHA I love it. OH and I guess Jennifer was right...Pedroia IS hotter than Cano right now
LOL, Ian. It's a good thing he didn't go to Duke, isn't it? Now *that* would have been a scandal!
mh, good luck with finding something you like better. I can relate to having a sucky job, although mine has only recently gotten to be that way. So far I'm trying to tough it out for multiple reasons.
Yep-- NONE OF THE ABOVE. I love the other research project, I'd do that for free (in fact I did for about a year, they just dug up some funds for me for this summer). But this one... gotta get out.
TG, right now mine is reasonably good on #1, partly toxic on #2, and reasonably okay on #3 (pay could be better but benefits are pretty good). Some of the toxicity factor will be easing shortly with someone's retirement. We'll see how it goes after that...
Ok, hopefully the following will make me feel better:
I'm going to close Gameday and go watch the sun set off the coast of Maine while getting up to my elbows in lobster and butter and wine while saying snarky things to myself about the other people at the dinner.
TEXAS, I just need the score to prove my point and the fact that with today's win, so far we lead the season series 6-5. The only ones that are desperate are the Redsox for some run support.
Jokes and stuff are fine. Being a dumbass is not. I don't like it when Sox fans act stupid, and I'm certainly not going to tolerate stupidity from Yanks fans.
Again - if he would have come on here and made coherent, rational arguments, he could have stayed. Silly jokes are fine, too. But making nonsensical "points" for the sole point of being a jerk, and then quoting Tim McCarver = dumbass.
Interesting...this new pitcher is so new that he doesn't have any kind of roster photo to display on Gameday. It looks like an icon of a random picture.

Yankees SUCK!
