Trade Deadline: Open Thread

The trade deadline is now officially upon us. There are less than 24 hours left on the clock for MLB teams to make their moves and shuffle their rosters.

Today figures to be busy as always- but especially so for Sox fans, with the rumors swirling around Manny Ramirez. Let this post serve as your open thread to post new rumors, talk about the rumors, and generally go stir crazy waiting for the final bell to sound. Throughout the day, I'll try and update this post with the latest news and rumors. So I have one request: if you post a rumor, please also post a link to where you read it.

Let's hope this year's bounty is a little better than last year's horror show...

4:29 pm - SI
The Red Sox traded Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers late Thursday afternoon, SI.com has learned.

Jason Bay is headed to Boston as part of the deal, SI.com has learned. The Pirates will get four minor leaguers in the three-way trade.

3:49 pm - Fox/Ken Rosenthal

The Rays' pursuit of Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is off "unless a miracle happens," according to a source close to the negotiations.

Whether that means the three-way Manny Ramirez blockbuster is back on remains to be seen.

A source with one of the clubs said that the trade was still dead in the minutes leading to Thursday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver deadline.

3:10 pm - Per MLB.com, Jason Bay is a Ray.

2:50 pm - SI/Jon Heyman

The Los Angels Dodgers have re-entered the Manny Ramirez Sweepstakes, SI.com has learned.

The Marlins deal may not be dead. But the Dodgers could become a real player here and knock out Florida at the last minute. According to people familiar with the talks, the Dodgers have offered young outfielder Andre Ethier, but Boston is believed to prefer the ultra-talented Matt Kemp.

It won't be easy to put together a deal with a different team on such short notice. But the Dodgers were talking a few days ago to the Red Sox, before it became apparent that Boston's focus was on the Marlins.

The Red Sox, who appear motivated to trade Ramirez, have spent most of their time on the Marlins over the past 24 hours. But sources say the Dodgers have always remained interested.

Ramirez has approved a trade to go to Florida, Philadelphia, Los Angels [sic] or anywhere else, SI.com has learned. In return for Ramirez signing off on a deal, the acquiring team will agree to drop the two club options for $20-million apiece for 2009 and '10 in his current deal.

2:02 pm - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

There was quite some optimism about an hour ago, quite some pessimism now. Sure sounds on this end as if the Pirates were ready to go, but the Marlins' demands - including the extra cash - blew this out. But this obviously will take a while to flesh out. Still have not heard anyone say it is outright dead, either.

Just spoke to someone in Tampa, and the Rays are not necessarily out of this, contrary to much else that is being said.

1:49 pm - FOX Sports/Ken Rosenthal

As of 1:30 p.m. ET, the Manny Ramirez trade was "dead," according to an executive with one of the three teams involved in the discussions.

1:35 pm - ESPN/Jayson Stark

Yet another official with one of these three teams says the Manny-Bay deal is dead. In the aftermath, the teams involved seem unsure of what happened. The Pirates are blaming the Marlins. The Marlins are blaming the Pirates. And the Red Sox aren't too happy with either of them.

1:15 pm - catching up on non-Manny news
ESPN/Jayson Stark

That never-ending Yankees-Red Sox intrigue has found its way to Scott Eyre. Both clubs are in on the Cubs left-hander, who is expected to be moved for a very modest return. But both teams also have him as a back-burner option as they search for more impactful bullpen help.

And the Red Sox's first choice, if they don't get John Grabow in the potential Manny Ramirez deal, is believed to be Kansas City's Ron Mahay.

MLB.com
The Braves feel like they're in good position heading into Thursday's Trade Deadline. More than five teams have shown great interest in Will Ohman and it's believed the Rays, Yankees and Red Sox are among those bidding for his services.
Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Braves had trade discussions about [Will] Ohman with at least five teams, including Boston, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Detroit and the Chicago White Sox.
Providence Journal/Sean McAdam
Their interest in Atlanta's Will Ohman is minimal, since they have questions about Ohman's ability to pitch in a market like Boston.

The Sox remain in pursuit of Ohman's former teammate with the Cubs, Scott Eyre. The Cubs have two other lefties -- Neal Cotts and Sean Marshall -- and have some depth from which to deal.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals have proposed a deal that would send Ron Mahay to the Sox in exchange for Brandon Moss. Mahay, who was drafted by the Red Sox as an outfielder, then converted to a pitcher, and has emerged as one of the game's better lefty specialists.

Mahay is in the first year of a two-year, $8-million deal. Mahay's money next year would merely replace the $3 million the Sox are paying Mike Timlin this season. Timlin, 42, is a free agent and is not expected back in 2009.

1:13 pm - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Pirates like the prospects, I am told, and no longer are the holdup

12:38 pm - Yahoo/Tim Brown

As the clock ticked past noon Manny Standard Time, the Red Sox official said negotiations to unload Ramirez "have a lot of variables and is very complicated." But a Pirates source sounded more optimistic, saying they are satisfied with their end of the deal, which would send outfielder Jason Bay to the Red Sox. The Pirates, who would get Jeremy Hermida from the Marlins as their centerpiece in the trade, have ceased trade discussions with other teams involving Bay.

Another source familiar with the negotiations said at 12:30 ET that, "It's getting closer, but there's still a chance it could fall apart."

12:36 pm - ESPN/Peter Gammons

A source close to the three-way negotiations involving Manny Ramirez says the deal is close to dead. Florida has reportedly asked Boston for a cash outlay beyond the $7 million to cover Ramirez's contract, in addition to two prospects. That essentially would add up to the Red Sox trading Ramirez, $9 million and two prospects for Jason Bay.

12:35 pm - ESPN/Buster Olney via Boston Globe

"If he's not traded by 4 p.m. today, there's a 1 percent chance that he finishes the year with the Red Sox. This has gotten so ugly," said Olney, referencing Ramirez's recent trade demands and lackadiasical play.

12:20 pm - SI/Jon Heyman

Embattled superstar Manny Ramirez has approved a trade to the Marlins, SI.com has learned. While the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates are still negotiating details of the mega-trade and nothing has been finalized by the teams, one major hurdle has been cleared by Ramirez accepting the deal ahead of time, according to people familiar with the negotiations. The Red Sox approached Ramirez in advance of their negotiations, and got his OK. Ramirez signed off on the paperwork, contingent upon the two $20-million team options for 2009 and '10 being dropped. The move will set the stage for Ramirez to become a free agent this winter, assuming a trade can be completed by the three teams.

12:13 pm - Boston Globe/Gorden Edes chat transcript

This thing is still very fluid. The word is that the teams are still pushing to get this done. It has NOT gotten to commissioner Bud Selig, who has to sign off on the money, contrary to some reports out there, though the commissioner has certainly been kept apprised of what is happening. I'm hearing some pessimism out of the Sox side this a.m., although I remind you as of late yesterday afternoon, I was told there was slim chance of anything big happening. So that's where we stand.

11:45 am - Boston Globe/Nick Cafardo

One major league source indicated he felt the deal was slightly hung up on an extra prospect that Pittsburgh might want to feel as though they're receiving proper return (they're getting Jeremy Hermida and prospects) for left fielder Jason Bay and reliever John Grabow.

There are different scenarios for that prospect. There's the possibility that the extra prospect would have to come from Boston, which would be a real problem considering the Red Sox are dealing Manny Ramirez and offering to pay the rest of his salary. (Incredibly, the Florida Marlins might acquire a $20 million superstar and make money on the deal). If that were the case would the Sox require another player (shortstop Jack Wilson?) to go along with Bay and Grabow? There's also the possibility that Florida has to pony up another blue-chipper to make it work.

10:53 am - Pittsburgh Post Gazette/Dejan Kovacevic

Just got off the phone with a couple people -- non-Pirates -- and there seems to be this growing sense that it is the Pirates really dictating this process. There are too many teams and too many moving parts to imagine that they are outright playing one deal off the other, but they probably are as close as they can be to doing exactly that. The Pirates' thinking, according to one, is that they want two high-end types and one or two others, depending which direction they turn. Obviously, giving up Grabow makes for the higher number.

10:45 am - Baseball Prospectus/Will Carroll

As of 10:30 ET this morning, the teams involved in the Manny Ramirez deal have taken a bit of a break. The holdup continues to be sorting out the prospects, specifically which ones the Marlins will get and will give up. The framework, agreed to early last night, has expanded a bit, including John Grabow and, in some iterations, Jack Wilson. The Marlins have switched up on what prospects are available and which aren't. It looks like slugger Mike Stanton is definitely out and that Ryan Tucker is out unless the Marlins get a "plus prospect" such as Justin Masterson in addition to Ramirez. This one could go down to the wire.

Regarding the framework sent to the Commissioner's Office, it appears that was not an approval but an "informational" discussion. Manny Ramirez waived his 10-and-5 rights, and both the Red Sox and Marlins inquired as to whether the $7 million that would be transferred would be approved. According to multiple sources, the Commissioner's Office cannot approve or disapprove a deal until that deal is completed, but it will often be involved on a consultative basis, much the same way that it's consulted on free agents, draftees, and arbitration cases.

The Rays remain Plan B with Jason Bay, but they haven't put up the prospects in quality or quantity that the Pirates want in return

9:47 am - ESPN/Jayson Stark

An official of one of these three teams placed the odds of this getting done today at "50-50."

Multiple sources have said that outfield prospect Mike Stanton is not in this trade, although Boston asked for him and Pittsburgh has been insisting on a prospect of his caliber, in addition to Jeremy Hermida and other prospects.

Despite reports that left-handed reliever John Grabow would wind up in Boston, indications are that he would actually go to the Marlins if this trade gets done.

8:35 am - Associated Press

Hours after Marlins president David Samson said anything is possible, club owner Jeffrey Loria denied a deal was in place that would send Ramirez to Florida as part of a three-team trade.

"There's no news, nothing to talk about," Loria said early Thursday.

[A] person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press early Thursday there was no tentative agreement. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because talks were ongoing, with the trade deadline looming Thursday afternoon.

12:04 am - SI/Jon Heyman

[W]hile there's still some back and forth going on, people involved in the talks are still expressing optimism that the deal will eventually get done.

There's still work to be done in the Red Sox-Marlins part of the megadeal, but one swap that's on the table would send young outfielder Jeremy Hermida, power-hitting outfield prospect Mike Stanton and hard-throwing young pitcher Ryan Tucker from Florida to Boston for Ramirez. However, the Marlins are said to be trying to keep the highly-regarded Stanton out of the trade. Josh Willingham was discussed as a replacement for Hermida, but it appears Hermida would be the main player going in the first part of a potential deal.

In the most talked-about three-team scenario, Boston would send one or more of those players acquired from Florida to Pittsburgh for star outfielder Jason Bay, who would be a more palatable replacement for Ramirez than either Hermida or Willingham. Other combinations being discussed are believed include reliever John Grabow or perhaps even shortstop Jack Wilson. But Pittsburgh is said to be still trying to enhance its end of things, and Boston could wind up tying to substitute a different third team other than Pittsburgh.

Though the players haven't absolutely been agreed to, the Red Sox and Marlins felt good enough about things to have relayed their dealings to the commissioner's office, which needs to be aware if more than $1 million will change hands.

While some have suggested the Red Sox will ultimately keep Ramirez because there's no way to replace his likely rest-of-2008 production, it's possible Boston may be at its breaking point. Ramirez just might have enhanced his chances for a deal by failing to hustle out a groundball Tuesday night at Fenway Park, inciting boos from the crowd.

11:27 pm - ESPN/Peter Gammons

As midnight approached Wednesday night on the East Coast, officials from the Marlins and Red Sox said a deal involving Manny Ramirez was not done. Indications from Pittsburgh were that the Pirates were not satisfied with the players they were receiving in exchange for sending Jason Bay to Boston. And in California, Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, said he had been told nothing, which means nothing has been completed in terms of Ramirez's waving his no-trade rights or in completing paperwork to send to the commissioner's office.

So, the complicated three-way deal might go down close to Thursday's 4 p.m. ET deadline. Ramirez wants out, and is willing to go to Florida. The Marlins want him -- and what he means to their pennant chances and pursuit of a new ballpark. The Red Sox clearly are willing to finance Ramirez's exit.

But the value of the young players was a sticking point late into the night, and one Red Sox official said, "This is anything but done."

11:04 pm - Palm Beach Post

The Marlins have reached a tentative agreement to acquire Manny Ramirez from Boston as part of a three-team deal that will send Jeremy Hermida and three Florida prospects to Pittsburgh, an American League source said Wednesday night.

Officials with the Marlins and Red Sox did not confirm the deal but the source said a tentative agreement was reached about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The Marlins will get Ramirez for Hermida, right-hander Ryan Tucker and two other prospects, with those four players being flipped to Pittsburgh for outfielder Jason Bay and left-hander John Grabow.

The Red Sox will send the Marlins enough cash to cover the remainder of Ramirez contract, as well as an unnamed prospect.

Pittsburgh gets Hermida and two prospects - two from Florida and one from Boston. One of the Marlins' prospects is believed to be Tucker.

10:34 pm - ESPN

"The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me," Ramirez said. "During my years here, I've seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn't want them to try to turn the fans against them.

"The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy," Ramirez added. "I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price, and I don't have peace here."

10:10 pm - ESPN/Peter Gammons

The Manny Ramirez trade conversations are expected to continue into Thursday, according to a source. Because it's a very complicated deal, involving a player who has the right to veto the trade and other parts, it is still unlikely to happen. But the negotiations will go on.

9:05 pm - Baseball Prospectus/Will Carroll

The Commissioner's Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. [...] There's also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-and-5 rights, and no-trade clause.

[T]he teams, I am told, have not agreed on the specific prospects to be included in the deal. It's expected that in addition to the principals, the Red Sox would get John Grabow and give up two prospects, while the Marlins would get one prospect and give up two. There's still a lot of haggling but my scribbling notes make it look like the structure of the deal is:

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (Red Sox), and cash (likely covering Ramirez's remaining salary)

Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two Marlins, one Red Sox)

Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

There is still potential for this to fall apart over the prospects, but things appear closer now than ever before.

Don't know if the others are coming over here or not, but let me be the first to thank you, TG, for making this thread. I think we're all a little bit freaked out about this right now...

I'm here....

and I've been freaking out most of the day, so I'm already there!!

Thank's for the thread, TG!

Tomorrow is going to be a very stressful day.

I'm moving here, and still clinging to my prospects.

[ Jessi ] says:

Thanks TG for the thread! Now we can stress together.

I'm relieved that Manny is leaving, but I am freaking out about our minor leaguers. Please don't give away Moss or Lowrie!!

[ Cathy ] says:
on July 30, 2008 10:43 PM

If Lowrie goes, who will play SS? We all know that Cora isn't a full time player. So I don't think it will be him.

[ Angie ] says:
on July 30, 2008 10:43 PM

I'm definitely freaking out now. I can't tell if any of the rumors are true about Manny being traded or not but I'll be really really sad if he is. I'll probably cry. I don't think anybody wants the Manny era to be over.

[ Bethie ] says:
on July 30, 2008 10:44 PM

I get nervous every time someone talks about fishing out of our minor league talent pool.

Cause so many possibilities pop up as to who they could put on the block.

I is skeered.

[ Jessi ] says:
on July 30, 2008 10:46 PM

Is there any chance, if Lowrie was traded, that Pedroia would be moved and a 2B would be called up from the minors?

This is just a random shot in the dark. I know that moving a guy who has amazing defense at 2B to another position in the middle of the season is not likely. Also, I know nothing of our 2B prospects.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on July 30, 2008 10:46 PM

There's no way they can get rid of Jed while Lugo is still rehabbing. They need Jed for at least another month, so I think he's safe. :::clings:::

[ Cathy ] says:

I don't think they will move Pedie from 2B.

Echoing the others, thanks, TG. I need a vent for freaking out about rumors.

Also, re: the shortstop situation, I guess Theo'd look outside the system for an everyday shortstop to fill in, and if that doesn't work, call up Joe Thurston from Pawtucket.

[ Mary ] says:
on July 30, 2008 10:47 PM

They're not getting a short stop out of the trade, so they would be stupid to think they could function with only Cora until Lugo comes back.

[ Jessi ] says:

Oh and may I remind you of one of you minor leaguers stolen from us - Hanely Ramirez, of the Florida Marlins. Great SS with great numbers.

Although their careers aren't comparable, Bay and Manny's numbers right now are.

I still am a Manny fan, and I'll be sad to see him go if he leaves -- but as far as replacements go, I'd be pretty psyched indeed for Bay. Depending on who the prospect(s) we send are though, of course.

And I really, really hope the Sox don't give up my favorites. Whiiiich is kind of enough to fill up three rosters.

[ Piney61 ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:16 PM

The gist is this I'm getting

Boston gives up: Manny Ramirez, prospect, cash
Pittsburgh gives up: Jason Bay, John Grabow
Florida gives up: prospect, Ryan Tucker, Jeremy Hermida

Boston gets: Bay and Grabow
Pittsburgh gets: Jeremy Hermida, Ryan Tucker, FLA prospect, BOS prospect
Florida gets: Manny Ramirez, cash, BOS prospect

Something to that ilk

[ Cathy ] says:

On a completely unrelated note, it sure is good to see Tedy Bruschi again.

The perfect scenario would be for Manny to veto the trade, saying that Boston is the only place for him, then go on an absolute tear, and win the MVP award on the way to another Sox WS. instead of accepting the award, he gives it to the FO, then dumps Boras and gets his option picked up, and plays here for the rest of his career.

Cathy- :D You know, if Boras wasn't factored in, I wouldn't be so surprised if Manny did something like that. (the hitting part at least) Dangit, that would make me so happy.

[ Cathy ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:27 PM

Bay's offensive numbers are comparable to Manny's this season. his average is a bit lower(.284 to .301) but he has 2 more HR's and only 7 fewer RBI's than Manny, and is better defensively.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:29 PM

Bay is pretty fantastic. Great defensively, speedy on the basepaths, very solid bat. Manny's OPS+? 142. Bay? 137. Slim margin. Add in the vast difference in salaries, plus Bay's only 29 and Manny's 36... it's pretty much a wash as far as run production goes.

[ mhcranberry ] says:

Is Jason Bay a narcissistic manchild?

[ Jessi ] says:

I will be upset if the Manny trade does not go down. I am preparing myself and happy that an enormous weight has been lifted from the team.

Again, this will benefit the team in the LONG run.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:34 PM

If we get a Manny replacement and lefty help in the bullpen? This will benefit the team in the SHORT run, too.

[ Bethie ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:35 PM

Well, Buster Olney thinks Manny will be gone by the deadline.

[ Liza ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:35 PM

Grabow's a lefty reliever. He's 29, 6'2'', 205 lbs. He throws a fastball, slider, and changeup. He has a 1.30 WHIP this year, which is scary in a reliever.

Right-handers have a .351 OBP against him and lefties just .327.

His career monthly ERA scares me, though, considering we'd have him for August and September:
March/April: 2.40
May: 4.02
June: 5.47
July: 3.49
August: 4.27
September/October: 6.60

Bottom line, in my opinion: he might help, but won't be our savior.

(I love Baseball-Reference.)

Grabow has a 3.19 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, 45 Ks, and 23 BBs in 53.2 IP this season. He has given up just 3 ER in his past 13.1 IP.

He's a pretty good lefty pitcher, and we need bullpen help. Badly.

[ Jessi ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:38 PM

Just watched Tek's postgame interview - that is why he is the captain. So relaxed and calm and makes it seem like it will be so easy for the Sox to comeback from this.

[ Texas Gal ] says:

A poster at SoSH put this together re: Manny vs. Bay - and it's pretty cool.

Runs created/lost:

Defense:
(Fielding Bible):
Bay: -1
Ramirez: -15

Baserunning:
(bases added/taken away):
Bay: +23
Ramirez: -4

Hitting:
(batting runs created from THT):
Bay: 75
Ramirez: 70

(GPA)
Bay: .303
Ramirez: .301

TG, which makes Bay come out ahead, it looks like.

Yes, Jessi, the unflappable Tek. Much as I love Manny in some ways, it's amazing to consider that he and Tek are pretty much the same age. The difference in the way they come across, maturity wise, is astonishing.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:43 PM

Also, Grabow was PECOTA'd to be 1.39 WHIP and 3.85 ERA - so he's not far off, and there shouldn't be a massive regression to the mean with him.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:45 PM

And Grabow really only needs to be a LOOGY, or a modified LOOGY. I don't think he's being considered as some sort of long relief guy.

[ Jessi ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:51 PM

TG thank you for the Manny vs. Bay chart - made me feel much better.

[ Liza ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:53 PM

Grabow's numbers aren't too skewered when it comes to lefty/righty. Maybe they think this is their eighth-inning guy.

He seems to do well in pressure situations, though.

[ xMiracle ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:54 PM

So basically, tonight was pretty much Manny's last game in a Red Sox uniform?

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:56 PM

Piney-- you should probably say money instead of cash. Because when you say Cash it sounds like your talking about Kevin. =P

[ Cathy ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:56 PM

If this deal gets done, and the sox get Grabow, who leaves the bullpen?

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:59 PM

Sox better not give up Lowrie, Masterson, Moss or Van Every. I would be EXTREMELY pissed.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 30, 2008 11:59 PM

I think Theo will keep working Oki as the 8th inning guy - he's doing better than before. If Grabow's splits don't skew LOOGY-wise (and it's certainly true the Buccos never used him to his full potential), maybe he'd be a 7th inning guy? Or help spell Oki in the 8th, so he's not overworked?

[ Mary ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:01 AM

Linsday - My thoughts EXACTLY.

But I still think they would be stupid to trade Jed...

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:01 AM

Good question Cathy...I would say Masterson but hes in Aardsma's spot. So what would happen when Aardsma comes back? I would say Jed but Lugo may not be eady by then. And could Cora play full time until Lugo does come back?

Hmm...

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:01 AM

Considering you just named 3 of the top trade bait guys, I'd say you better get ready to be disappointed. The Pirates aren't going to give up Bay and Grabow (or Bay, Wilson and Grabow) and get rejects.

[ Cathy ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:02 AM

How about packaging Manny and Lugo together? ;)

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:02 AM

Aww Tex i'm getting sad!

[ Texas Gal ] says:

Sounds like a plan to me Cathy! ;) haha

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:03 AM

Or send Coco with Manny...

but i'm sure that wouldnt happen.

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:04 AM

That wouldnt work though because we need a backup outfielder...Hmmm

[ Liza ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:04 AM

The latter role is what I meant--be an Aardsma type, I guess. And I bet they're worried about Okie's workload after last year, so this could be their solution.

I was really encouraged hearing that the Pirates like Hunter Jones. He's good, but he's not going to have a role with the big league Sox.

[ Cathy ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:05 AM

I can see Moss as being one of the people traded. He is obviously going to be a starter in his career, but with Jason Bay being younger than Manny, I don't see how he would play for the Sox.

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:06 AM

No Mossy! =(

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:07 AM

"(Pawtucket, RI) - The PawSox looked a little sloppy and a little lethargic on Wednesday afternoon, falling 8-3 to Rochester. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first, Pawtucket managed just 1 run and 3 hits the rest of the way. The normally sure-handed PawSox also committed a pair of errors. David Pauley (12-4) took the loss as Anthony Swarzak won his Triple A debut. Jeff Natale hit his first I.L. home run for Pawtucket. The series resumes on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Michael Bowden (0-2) faces Carmen Cali (5-0)."

Sounds like the Red Sox werent the only ones with a bad game today...

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:08 AM

Cathy-- I agree... I think Moss is trade bait, now or later on... sad, I love him, but I think they love the Master's Son and Lowrie is too valuable right now...

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:09 AM

As much as I love Mossy, I do have to agree with you mhcranberry =(

[ Liza ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:10 AM

Agreed, mhc--Moss is ready for a major league job, but the Sox have more than enough outfield at the moment.

Also, JEFF NATALE! A line drive broke his arm a few months ago, and he's just now pack up in Pawtucket. I'm glad he's doing well.

[ Cathy ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:12 AM

I love Mossy, and would love for him to play for the Sox, but if he gets traded, I'll be happy to see him start for somebody.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:12 AM

Lowrie's not valuable if they get Jack Wilson... /devil's advocate

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:13 AM

I wish we could just get rid of Manny and get whoever we want. Unfortunately, it doesnt work that way =(

[ Cathy ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:14 AM

I would love for Mossy to stay with the Sox, but he should be a starter, and he can't be one with the Sox, so it's best if he gets traded.

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:14 AM

I agree Cathy. Kind of how I felt about Hinske. I love him, but i am happy to see that he's playing full time now.

+ Ortiz.

[ Liza ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:18 AM

Lindsay - Not that I've heard of, but it's doubtful--if Cora or Lowrie gets hurt (knocks on wood) he'd probably be their replacement, because of his versatility. Interesting idea though.

[ Jessi ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:19 AM

Cathy - Lugo wasn't that great with Manny, so maybe he'll go on some amazing hot streak when he gets back and there is no Manny!

[ Lindsay ] says:

Anyone watching ESPN? 76% said that the sox will NOT trade Manny...

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:21 AM

Or if they are looking for a pitcher, why not Chris Smith? Or David Pauley?

Maybe not David Pauley though since he's the Paw Sox ace...

on July 31, 2008 12:24 AM

Jessi-- wouldn't that be great?

[ Liza ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:25 AM

I think they want someone established and consistent, not a minor leaguer who might be shaky.

Plus, Pauley's a starter, and they have enough of those for now.

Is anyone else watcing Baseball Tonight? Now Manny is saying that he's not going to be traded. If this blows up....

If Manny stays, he had better promise to keep his mouth shut, be a good teammate, and smash home runs.

[ mhcranberry ] says:

Wait, Manny says he's not going anywhere?

Then again, I don't know if he has any credibility right now...

[ Jessi ] says:

Mhc - I can't remember the exact comment, but it was something along the lines of "I'm not being traded. There is no one to trade me for."

[ Cathy ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:48 AM

Does Manny know who Jason Bay is?

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 12:53 AM

Anyone else get the sense Manny has been given some horrifically bad advice recently?

Also--- this is a good opportunity for us all to remember that ballplayers are ballplayers for their ball playing skills. They tend to be not very good businessmen, PR people, financial managers, etc... There are some with natural talent, but really, it is easy for us to forget how many people are talking in their ears and how easy it is for them to make really bad mistakes.

[ Cathy ] says:

I seriously think Boras is behind all of this. That man is pure evil, and will stop at nothing to get a big payday.

Report: Odds of Manny deal '50-50'

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com quotes "an official" from one of the three teams involved in the rumored Manny Ramirez swap as saying that the odds of a deal are "50-50."
Stark reports that Marlins outfield prospect Mike Stanton is not in the trade "although Boston asked for him" and notes that despite previous indications John Grabow would actually be headed to Florida rather than Boston. Jul. 31 - 9:18 am et
Source: ESPN.com

[ Cathy ] says:
on July 31, 2008 9:58 AM

Who would replace Grabow coming to Boston in that deal? Or would it just be Bay?

[ starr4 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 10:21 AM

No doubt, this is a complicated deal to pull together with a looming deadline.

Two questions:
How will it affect the team is Manny remains?
Would Selig extend the deadline for these teams to work out trade details?

[ Bottom Line Rob ] says:
on July 31, 2008 10:29 AM

This deal is essentially Bay & Grabow for Manny Ramirez... does anyone else think that's not very even-steven?

starr4: If Manny remains, I think the Sox have enough pros like Lowell and Tek to keep the peace... Manny will hit for his next contract and ignore his teammates and the media.. .and the Sox will still make the playoffs... but that's where chemistry and heart become more important and that may be where Manny's nonsense really hurts this team...

[ starr4 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 10:39 AM

Thanks Bottom Line Rob. Appreciate that.

This may, or may not, be relevant to the whole Manny story: spoke with a Puerto Rican colleague the other day about the cultural differences between mainstream American culture and Puerto Rican culture. His observation is that his culture embraces everyone in everyone's business. Clearly, American culture, not so much. Could we be seeing this play out here?

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 10:40 AM

Rob, do you think that having Papi back (and Lugo rehabbing in the clubhouse) could help keep the peace if Manny stays? As far as I can tell, he's closest to them, and they seem to be able to get through to him and keep him in check. Or has he worn out his welcome even with them?

Good Moanin' everyone.

What a day, eh? I have a *ton* of work to do and am more interested in trade talks.

Interesting bits from Schill on the Extra Bases blog.

This stood out to me...that he's willing to give up his 38 to Bay.
Schilling also said would give Jason Bay his No. 38 (and Bay's number with the Pirates) if Bay ends up joining the Red Sox in exchange for someone to give a five-figure donation to his charity, Curt's Pitch. "It pretty much can be had right now... yeah ...we'll work something out," Schilling said.

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 11:37 AM

Hey all--

It's confirmed.

Ken Griffey, Jr. to the South Side for Danny Richar and Nick Masset, possibly some cash. Griffey's approved the trade.

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 11:47 AM

starr4:

Manny's not Puerto Rican, so it is highly unlikely that PR culture has any influence on how he behaves or conducts business.

Ultimately this isn't a cultural misunderstanding, since other Dominican players seem to have no trouble at all with management. This is about how people conduct their business and manage their contracts, and everyone has been up to some stupid shit in those regards. The only culture in play here is American sports culture.

[ EricaC ] says:
on July 31, 2008 11:52 AM

Hey everyone!

I'm undecided about the whole possible Manny trade, as much as I love him, I don't think his heart is in Boston anymore, and after last night's game I think it is starting to affect the rest of the team.

That being said, if the trade does not go thru, hopefully we get back to the Manny we all love.

According to WBZ-TV, the Dodgers may be in on the Ramirez talks, which could possibly result in Andre Ethier or Matt Kemp finding themselves in Boston..

..which would significantly increase the BoSox's "Cute Player Quotient," which, y'know, is way more important than any of ManRam's home runs.

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 2:18 PM

I should add that I'm a believer in Theo and he won't do anything based on emotions. He'll do what is best for the team and the players involved. Maybe this off day for everyone there to cool off and get their heads together will make a difference.

If the deal doesn't get done, Manny can shut the hell up because it won't make a bit of difference and I for one will be glad that they didn't let stupid shit force their hand into a deal they weren't 100% confident in.

I'll admit I was getting pretty psyched up for Bay though. He sounded awesome, although I never got an answer on my question of whether he's a narcissistic manchild.

[ mhcranberry ] says:

We need to at least come out of all this with some bullpen help, right?

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 2:31 PM

Seriously....I don't want Manny to be dealt out of Boston. This drama is like Groundhog Day...you can set your watch to it. I think it got spun way more out of control than usual because (a) Scott Boras knows he won't get paid a red cent if the Sox pick up the options on the next 2 years, so it is in HIS interest (if not Manny's) to make that as unlikely as possible; (b) David Ortiz hasn't been available on the day to day to help keep Manny's manchild emotional needs in check...I think this has been probably building up or spiraling out since Papi went on the DL

[ Bottom Line Rob ] says:
on July 31, 2008 2:32 PM

ecl1958 - Yes I do think Ortiz and Lugo will play a big part in keeping the peace if Manny stays.

That said, I don't see anyone confronting Manny about this in the future.

Tito and Tek are going to say "okay fellas, this is our roster going forward. What's done is done, let's turn the page and win this division."

End of story.

Let's hope it goes that easy...

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 2:34 PM

The aforesaid is not to suggest that Manny's recent spate of toddler behavior hasn't been enough to make you want to scream...but I think the idea of him being out of the clean up spot...playing for another team...perhaps playing for the MFY (because really...why would he EVER agree to a trade to the Marlins unless he figured they would trade him at the end of the season to a real team?)...these are unthinkable thoughts.

[ jules ] says:
on July 31, 2008 2:39 PM

[ ecl1958 ] says:

[ Lulu ] says:
on July 31, 2008 2:47 PM

I had 5 hours of math this morning, and all I could think during pre-calc was..."I wonder if Manny's still a Red Sock"

I heard that Manny and Ortiz are close, but not near as close as Manny and Tavarez. Tavarez's departure was probably another factor.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 2:49 PM

Maybe his Dominican pals, though they love him very much, are sick of babysitting a grown-ass adult.

In any event, if Manny stays, we're in for two+ solid months of even more hyper-scruitinization of his every move. If he sneezes, it will be because he's protesting the front office. If he smiles, it's to piss the front office off. Plus, we'll get daily speculation about whether Manny will play or refuse to play, etc. Sounds like a ton of fun~

[ Jennie ] says:

What's inherently different about this year's meltdown than the previous versions? He's kicked and screamed and threatened to hold his breath until he got his way...and in the end, the storm blew over and everyone went back and played the game. How did this get so different?

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:10 PM

I don't think of it as babysitting. I have been in enough group organizations to know that sometimes there are people who are just really able to just call others on their shit....and get listened to. NBD.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:13 PM

I meant that sticking up for a friend AT WORK on occasion is one thing; apologizing for him to the media every now and again, explaining his bad behavior, trying to give him pep talks, etc.

But after years and years of this, and with the recent "Money! Money! Money!" nature of Manny's comments, I wouldn't blame his pals one bit if they're sick of running interference for him. AT WORK. Where everyone's supposed to be a professional.

In my opinion, this has progressed beyond calling others on their shit and into full babysitting territory. And Papi and Lugo aren't really paid to be his life coach.

(I still love Manny, though - despite all the nonsense)

[ starr4 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:18 PM

Here's an oddball way to look at this: what if Manny is reflecting back to us all the types of behavior we dislike in ourselves, our coworkers, our teammates, our partners, our neighbors? What if he's acting like a super magnified mirror to all of us? What can we learn from that?

I love Manny, as many of us do. There's nothing better than his childish abandon when he's in the flow and playing the game. The flipside of that is darned uncomfortable to witness.

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:18 PM

Texy - I completely agree. The stuff I imagine has been helpful in the past is not the public excusing of inexplicable or inexcusable behavior, but the stuff that keeps that behavior from happening in the first place. The more I think about Manny, the more I think that he is not so much a prima donna, as a really fragile head case (where did I read someone call him a savant who could swing) who makes out like he has an ego as big as anything - but that is starting to sound more like overcompensation than anything else, at least to my ear. I think he seems to be in a better head space when he feels he has friends in the clubhouse.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:31 PM

Savant is the perfect description for him.

Also, I should note that I am highly suspicious that a large part of this Manny nonsense is being stoked by certain members of the media who might be acting on a front office agenda. Manny's direct quotes are troubling enough, but I don't blame him entirely for this whirlwind of negativity.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:33 PM

As I posted up at the top, per MLB.com... Jason Bay is a Ray.

[insert rhyming joke here]

[ Jennie ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:34 PM

Supposedly it's been reported on WFAN that Bay went to Tampa Bay. I didn't hear it myself so perhaps I shouldn't repeat it.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:35 PM

The prospects PIT got for Bay (if that trade report from MLB.com is accurate) seem light. That makes me think the Marlins were the ones screwing up the 3-team deal.

[ jules ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:35 PM

Jason Bay is a Ray.

Cuss.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:36 PM

You're right TG, right now Papi/Lugo have other things to focus on (Lugo on physical rehab, Papi on being the heart and soul of the team). They shouldn't have to babysit. And it could be that he's even worn them out, unfortunately.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:36 PM

If this means the Sox get Kemp, though, I'm not sure I care.

Although, again, I don't see the Dodgers trading him. Why can't we just send them Coco/Moss and Manny, and take Kemp and Albatross Andruw Jones off their hands? C'MON DODGERS!

[ lblue ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:38 PM

Long time lurker, first time commenter.

Texas Gal says:"If we got Kemp, I would pee my pants.

But we won't. Because Dodger fans would riot."

Inasmuch as we riot about anything. Boston fans wouldn't put up with the Dodgers' mediocrity with as much indifference as us Dodgers fans appear to.

Though I must say, Manny would solve our stagnating offense, but our clubhouse is dysfunctional enough, already. Can you imagine Jeff Kent and Manny Ramirez in the same dugout?

[ jules ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:38 PM

Oh I agree, if Theo can pull of a Manny for Kemp trade...wow.

[ Bottom Line Rob ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:39 PM

I think it's very possible that Manny has some insecurities that may cause him to say and do some silly things.

You often see successful people crumble, when their claim to fame (baseball for Manny) is threatened.

Manny's friendships with Papi and Lugo will be tested over the next 2 months if he stays... I just hope it doesn't slow Ortiz down...

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:40 PM

I'm sorry, what is our opinion of Kemp?

[ Ellen ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:41 PM

I hear he's cute.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:41 PM

Bay? heartheartheart
Kemp? heartheartheartheart

Both are phenomenal, but Kemp is younger and, to me, has even more of an upside.

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:43 PM

15 more minutes...

Do they have to go public with any trade by the deadline? I can't sit here refreshing my computer for the whole day....

[ EricaC ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:43 PM

If the Red Sox are unable to trade Manny, even offering to pay out the rest of his contract this year, and still no real interest, do you think this will put things into perspective for him?

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:43 PM

I have to say my last consideration on Trading Deadline Day is the cuteness of a trade bait.

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:45 PM

Gordon Edes just reported on NESN that the Dodgers are out of the mix

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:45 PM

Things I blame Manny for:

1) my headache
2) the single worst database I have ever constructed

Anyone else got anything?

[ lblue ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:45 PM

From what I gather, Kemp has a little bit of a reputation for doing boneheaded things. Making baserunning errors and so forth. Nothing major, yet, but there are some who wonder when he'll get some baseball maturity.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:46 PM

No offense to Gordy, 'cause I love him, but he's been way behind on this story for days now. So take his reports with a grain of salt.

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:46 PM

Mermaid; NESN just said that its just the contract that needs to be finished by 4:00. It can always be announced to the public after that.

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:47 PM

Thanks for that TG. He was starting to worry me...lol

[ jules ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:48 PM

Anyone else got anything?

A "to do" list that I have to get done before going on vacation (tomorrow at 2:30!) that is not getting done ;-).

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:48 PM

3) waste of a perfectly lovely late July Thursday afternoon....

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:50 PM

i love how NESN keeps showing the podium...and no ones there lol

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:50 PM

So. 10 minutes left

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:51 PM

Who thinks Manny will be wearing a Red Sox uniform tomorrow?

[ EricaC ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:53 PM

well unless something big happens in say the next 5 minutes or so, I'd say more than likely

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:54 PM

MLB.com is now caveating their report, so essentially they broke the Bay story prematurely. Doesn't mean it's wrong, but...

Maybe this is negotiation by the Buccos? If the Sox end the day without gaining ground on the Yanks and Rays, they'll look a leeeeetle foolish.

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:55 PM

I'm waiting for TC to say "BREAKING NEWS" and throw out a trade that includes Manny. Or at least throw it over to Gordon or Cafardo.

5 more minutes

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:56 PM

Either way, I'm pretty sure that the team meeting Tito asked for before Friday's game will be a pretty interesting one.

[ starr4 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:56 PM

Agreed. And, leaves us with: can the men in the clubhouse influence Manny for the better?

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:57 PM

4) Me not getting anything done for the last couple of hours...

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:57 PM

If the Sox dont make a trade within the next 3 minutes (any trade) I will be pissed.

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 3:58 PM

Heaven knows there are a lot of guys in the clubhouse who can be terrific influences on Manny if he can be convinced to be receptive...

Ken Rosenthal says 3 way trade may still be on

NESN also reporting that the 3 way deal may be back from the dead....(hope it doesn't really also include Masterson)

The pic at the top of the page makes me sad....

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:08 PM

Whered everyone go?

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:09 PM

My guess? Everyone stroked out.

[ EricaC ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:10 PM

I'm still here... waiting for news of any kind....stuck at work so no TV coverage

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:10 PM

I've still got this page open but am trying to get some work done. Don't know where everyone else is. Maybe they shrugged their shoulders and left because nothing was announced by 4:00.

[ Liza ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:10 PM

For the record, ProJo's saying that unless the Manny deal actually does/did happen, Brandon Moss isn't going anywhere.

on July 31, 2008 4:11 PM

Waiting, working, waiting, working...

ahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a trade has gone down with manny!

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:20 PM

Woops, didnt mean to post that twice.

[ EricaC ] says:

What?????!?!?!?

I was beginning to believe that the impossible had happened, and he was staying? I hate being at work

[ jules ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:22 PM

If that's true, it's worthy of a double post. Please let us tv-less creatures stuck in the office know what you hear, thanks!

[ Jessi ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:24 PM

Hey guys! I managed to find a computer while I was out and just logged on. Did Manny get traded? What is going on?

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:24 PM

I second that, jules. I don't see anything posted on NESN.com, and no late breaking news via any news search on Manny's name.

Will keep this window open. Feeling pretty shaky but have to try to get some work done here, as I'm holding down the department solo.

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:25 PM

Dear Manny--

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Watching you play has been a gift. I remember the days when I wondered whether the Sox would ever win again. You brought so much joy to the park... thank you for reminding us occasionally that it is just a game. And thank you for that beautiful night in 2004. Thank you.

Thank you, and all the best wishes in the world to you and your family.

See you in the Hall.

yours, with affection and frustration,
and admittedly watery eyes even though I'm at the office,
MHCranberry, MPH

[ EricaC ] says:

SI.com is reporting Manny was traded to the Dodgers... thats it, single line... no details

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:25 PM

Nick Cafardo says he hears the Sox may have gotten Bay

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:28 PM

Can Nick Cafardo be any more vague, please?

[ lblue ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:30 PM

This whole thing is like reading tea leaves. Or a crystal ball that has fingerprints all over.

[ jules ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:30 PM

lack of details: killing me. and my freakin' deadlines. I'm so working tonight.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:30 PM

DID WE GET KEMP? I need to know please kthxbai.

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:31 PM

Texy - It doesn't sound like Kemp was in the deal.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:31 PM

I love that both SoSH and boston.com have crashed.

ANARCHY!

[ jules ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:32 PM

3-way with LA and Pitt? We get Bay?

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:32 PM

Supposedly it's a three-team deal, with Jason Bay going to the Sox through the Dodgers.

[ Jess from Boston ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:32 PM

I'm gunna miss Manny,
Hope we get someone good though...

[ starr4 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:32 PM

and here, I thought I got pinged for soaking up the bandwidth!
What's going on? We'd like to know.

[ jules ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:32 PM

Anarchy, indeed!

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:33 PM

The Red Sox traded Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers late Thursday afternoon, SI.com has learned.

Jason Bay is headed to Boston as part of the deal, SI.com has learned. The Pirates will get four minor leaguers in the three-way trade.

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:33 PM

i love the sox appeal commercial with wally!

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:33 PM

The question is who did the Dodgers move to Pitt to move Bay to Boston?

[ Lulu ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:33 PM

Manny's going to the dodgers, but there may be a third team involved.
We got Jason Bay. (source: WEEI)

mhcranberry, that post made me cry.

[ Erin ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:33 PM

4 minor leaguers? So dose that mean Jed and Justin are safe?

[ jules ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:35 PM

Who else is mildly amused by the thought of Joe Torre managing Manny?

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:35 PM

Not just Manny - Manny, Nomar AND Jeff Kent. Have fun with that!

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:35 PM

Nick Cafardo--"Manny doesnt know about the deal yet"

[ Erin ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:35 PM

I am Jules.

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:36 PM

Jules, I did not think of that! haha.

[ Lindsay ] says:

TC-->

"Maybe thats where Terry Francona was going when he left the ballpark. To go find Manny and let him know that we traded him"

lol

[ ecl1958 ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:38 PM

mhc, what a beautiful post. Now my eyes are watery too. I wish I could go somewhere and cry, but I still have two more hours at work, then groceries. No time for real tears right now. I know they'll come later, though.

I've gotta admit that I still love Manny. Along with the negatives he has brought so many positives. I just wish I had become a Sox fan sooner so I could have appreciated him for longer. I'm going to miss him so damn much...

[ Lulu ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:38 PM

XD, I forgot about Joe Torre.

When was the last time the Sox played the Dodgers?

[ lblue ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:38 PM

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about this trade. Jason Bay to the Sox sounds good.

I still am wary about Manny in a Dodgers uniform, but will wait and see. The Garciaparra trade didn't really pay off. Dodgers=Red Sox West.

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:39 PM

omfg...

craig hansen and mossy --> Pirates

[ Erin ] says:

I have no idea how to feel about this. I need a hug or some ice cream.

[ Lindsay ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:40 PM

that doesnt sound right

[ jules ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:40 PM

woah. Hansen to the Pirates? Don't mind that. Moss? wow.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:40 PM

Hansen, Moss, Manny for Bay?

And are we paying Manny's salary, too?

[ Ellen ] says:

I'm sad about losing Moss too. But maybe he'll get more playing time.

Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss???

That cant be right.

Thats way too much that we're giving away. Way tooo much.

I'm so sad right now. :::sniffling:::

[ Jessi ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:43 PM

I'm happy with what you guys are saying about the deal. Manny playing under Joe Torre will be amusing, I'm happy to no longer see Hansen pitching for us, and Moss (who I do dearly love) deserves to be a starter. He has such great potential.

I was thinking about something...was Manny's last Sox hit that HR off K-Rod Monday night? Cause that would be awesome.

[ Lulu ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:43 PM

Yeah, we're paying Manny's salary too.

:O Hansen...it just feels like we've been struggling with him forever. Can't imagine him not here, and Moss...
It's better for Moss I guess. There's no room in the Sox outfield for him.

I'll miss Manny...

[ Erin ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:43 PM

I don't get why the Sox have to give up so much since all they're getting is Bay.

[ Jessi ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:45 PM

I'm also very happy that Lowrie and Masterson are here to stay.

[ mhcranberry ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:45 PM

AND STILL NO ONE HAS CONFIRMED THAT JASON BAY IS NOT A NARCISSISTIC MANCHILD.

(excusing, of course, the hypothesis that all MLB players are to some extent narcissistic manchildren)

THIS IS A GROWING CONCERN FOR ME.

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:46 PM

I just have to think that the FO must have really wanted to move him out of town. It is so much to give up and get only one player in return. They could have just kept him through the season and then cut him loose.

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:46 PM

HE IS NOT A NARCISSISTIC MANCHILD.

DO YOU FEEL BETTER NOW?

[ Lulu ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:48 PM

Wow...so is Ortiz moving to clean-up now? I heard he wanted to bat there when he first got here.

This is hard to comprehend. Our 3-4 combo is gone now.

[ mermaidmarian ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:48 PM

Is the moniker even "manchild" applicable before the age of 30?

[ Texas Gal ] says:
on July 31, 2008 4:48 PM

OH! And let's not forget Manny's club options were dropped.

So:
Dodgers give LaRoche and Bryan Morris, get Manny salary-free for 2008
Pirates give Bay, get four prospects
Sox give Manny, Moss, Hansen, + $7mm in salary, get Bay

[ mhcranberry ] says:
