"How to Manufacture a Run in 3 Easy Steps," by Dave Magadan:
(1) Have Dustin Pedroia hits a double or triple.
(2) Have Ortiz or Youk drives him home with a hit (or in the case of a triple, with a sac fly).
(3) Repeat as often as possiible.
I agree about coming to work sick. Last year I worked in a call center, large room, no windows and over 100 people. The company gave out free hand wipes, lysol, and flu shots, because it got that bad.
Hi jules, I'm dog tired. And my computer is being slow. Had to boot from scratch because it got cranky on me last night. The broadband modem is still waking up. So...I'm stuck with Gameday graphics for a little while, I think. But I'm glad to see such a nice start to the game.
Jules, for whatever reason, the computer won't go into "sleep" mode at night unless I disconnect the broadband modem (5 Mb connection), and it takes a little while to go through its paces after I reconnect it. I also had to shut the computer down completely last night because, as I said, it did something cranky. It rebooted just fine when I got home from work today, almost always does, but until the modem finishes doing its thing, which takes a few minutes, pages load slowly. Everything is humming along just fine now.
Shouldn't be doing what, Jules? Bought it in December and it has a 5-year warranty. Wouldn't having an active Internet modem keep it "awake?" It's a Vista, and I know they have glitches...this one has a couple of quirks. Should I call Circuit City and talk them into a house call? I think they *will* do them. I'm not physically capable of lifting the tower, never mind figuring out how to disconnect and reconnect all this stuff (I'm officially a technodummy). I don't think it's outside corruption, given the firewalls, antivirus, antispyware and whole nine yards that I have installed on it. So I'm assuming it's internal...?
P.S. My ISP techies told me that it DOES take awhile for the modem stuff to reload after being disconnected. They suggested giving it at least 1/2 hour.
I'm feeling bad for the ballgirl. The ump did make a bit of a late call. I mean, she should have been paying better attention, but still. Thats pretty embarrassing.
ecl, seems like you're learning a lesson in why no one should ever own a PC. Macs rule, PCs drool.
ecl, an active connection shouldn't keep it awake. I do know that the spyware apps can slow down your computer, especially with Vista. A half hour for a modem to reload seems a bit much. But, then again, I avoid PCs, so am not an expert.
Dammit, Clay! I'm cheering for you and want to to kick ass, but dude, this isn't good.
fc, there was a considerable language barrier with the techie who told me that. I'm usually good with accents, but I had a devil of a time communicating with him, so perhaps we misunderstood each other. And it seems like the rev-up time is a lot quicker than that, really. Sometimes I wonder about issues with server traffic on my ISP during the early evening. It's lickety-split at the moment.
Erin-2, my first PC (which was a Windows 98) gave me 5 completely trouble-free years. And that was with virtually no protection installed (because I didn't know any better). My only experience with a Mac was abysmal, but then again it was in the mid-80s. I found it extremely NOT user-friendly. Hopefully the technology has improved since then. I'm very, very used to Windows. I'm just not tech-oriented enough to figure out what to do with the occasional glitches.
People who are used to Windows tend to find Mac user unfriendly. That never makes sense to me, because it is, in fact, a more intuitive and easy-to-use platform (I have lots of experience with both). And five trouble-free years are quite rare with PCs that run Windows.
Yeah, mid-80s Macs should definitely not be compared to today's versions. But, if Windows works for you, and doesn't cause you problems, keep using them. No reason to change. I'll just say that I've had eight or ten different Mac computers over the last decade (the high turnover rate has more to do with my love for shiny new things than with the dependability of the devices), and I think I've had one of them crash on me once. Once in a decade. Not many PC users can say that.
His confidence is shot. It doesn't help that they talked to the media about finding the answer to his pitching problems. He's putting a lot of pressure on himself.
I don't know what it is about him (probably the skanky Penthouse girlfriend), but I just can't muster any sympathy for Buchholz. I want him to just suck it up and pitch well. Get his shit together, in other words.
With Clay and Dice both in the rotation, our bullpen is going to be shot by September. but i think Clay will probably be going down to Pawtucket after this game.
Am I the only one that feels kind of bad for Clay? He is just so lost!
But him and Dice k are definately killing our bullpen. Hopefully Clay will be sent down to Pawtucket and mmaybe he'll come back next season ready to pitch
The good thing is that it is only the 4th inning, and the O's pitcher is also doing horrible...so hopefully we can get some runs off of him before he leaves the game.
Only thirteen more games left for Pawtucket this season, so Buchholz wouldn't be getting much work if he went down there. Still, it'd be better to see him sucking down there.
My windows antivirus security center says it's detected something, however they charge to fix it, downloading software. However ever time I do a full sweep it comes up with nothing. But in the meantime I am getting many popups from windows saying there is danger. So annoying.
Something about trojans, but I have done 2 sweeps that come up with nothing. I have a flashing yellow triangle on the bottom of the screen
driving me nuts
Okay, just checking. I have a Mac, and pop-ups are disabled, but every now and then I'll see one telling me that my Windows operating system has a problem.
Cathy, I was wondering that too. If it has more to do with him not wanting to pitch Toronto again. He has said it tingles after he sleeps on it, yeah everyone has that.
Will be interested to see if you find anything, Karen. I bought a McAfee subscription. It self-updates every day, and although I have it set for automatic scans, I run them manually pretty often. Have never found a single thing to date.
Yeah this game is depressing, more fun watching the tropical storm damage. Amazed at how much damage and it wasn't even a hurricane. There were 3 tornadoes within 5mi of me, and major damage in melbourne, where they have over 500 national guard troops headed, that's about 20mi away.
fc, I had AdAware and Spybot on the temporary freebie someone gave me a couple of years ago. I *think* they worked fine. Unfortunately, the organization that gave me the computer loaded obsolete software (Windows 98...in 2006!) onto it, and it appeared to not play well with the modern world. That's why I finally bit the bullet and saved the money to buy myself a current computer. But since you trust the freebie programs, maybe I'll get them rolling again, just in case there's something malicious responsible for some of my occasional glitches...
WOW...Okajima must be feeling really good about himself right now that the coach almost sent in an INFIELDER who's never pitched in a ML game before in his place.
poor Buckholz...I was almost screaming at the TV earlier for him to get better...I want him to do well so badly! I hate watching the train wreck while it's in motion, and being powerless to stop it...
I know B, but I'm still picturing the scene in the dugout:
Francona: "who else we got? DelCarmen available? wait, he was in last night. alright, who else?
Oki: "I feel good tonight, coach. I got the next inning.
Francona: (looking around past Oki waving at him frantically): 'ey, Cora, didn't I hear you threw a few innings in high school? how's that arm feel now?
I think we're all just still reeling from seeing Alex Cora actually up and THROWING like they were seriously asking him to pitch. kind of like if you suddenly saw Pedroia putting on the catchers mask.
maybe in the post-game conf we'll find out it was all a big joke.
Well, I'll admit that with Cora tossing in the pen, the Sox found a way to pull me out of my Deep Well of Depression by plunging me into Weirder Than Shit-ville.
Lyndsay, I could swear there was some long-assed game earlier this year where most of the bullpen got used, and the subject of Cora possibly being used came up in the media mix after the game.
Ok, that was bad. I'm going to watch rest of the weather coverage. Figure out what roads aren't flooded, or have tornado damage, for me to get to work.
ecl - I don't remember that game, but I do remember after the All-Star game, I read an article where they would have had Drew in to pitch if the game went on for more innings.
hadn't heard that one, ecl1958. I don't know if I should be scared that they are actually playing the "play a position you haven't played since little league, just for fun' game...in the middle of a PENNANT RACE!
that said....I would love to see Youk pitch. you just know he'd end up ejected for throwing at batters' heads.
Just got home from work...poor Clay. I can't even be mad at him because he just looks so sad. He needs to talk to Dice-K about high-pressure situations.
Cora in the bullpen eh? Could we possibly get a video of that?
I feel so bad for Clay. He looked like he was about to just break down in tears. He must feel so bad, and it's hard for me to be mad at him because he really is COMPLETELY LOST right now. =(
I wish we could send Buckhholz a mass email/post hug - and a bunch of confidence - TG, another good idea. we still believe in you, Buchholz, YOU CAN DO IT!

May I take this opportunity to bitch about people who come to work sick and, guess what, make everyone else sick?
