Tuesday Wednesday Curveball

Tuesday Wednesday Curveball - Week Ten
The Olympics officially kick off this Friday in Beijing, and if you're anything like me, you're going to be watching 7-8 hours of coverage every day, minimum. One thing you won't be watching after this year, though, is baseball-- 2008 marks the last time baseball will be played as an Olympic event.

So let's hear from you: if you were the manager of the USA Olympic baseball team, and (like with the NBA) could have your pick of MLB players, who would you select as your starting 9? This wouldn't be like the All-Star vote, tainted by nostalgia and bias -- who is the best player you'd select at each position to help America take home the gold? Obviously, no Canadians or other nationalities can be selected -- but naturalized citizens are still eligible (Papi, Manny, Pujols, etc.)

As always, you don't have to be a fan of the Red Sox to get in on the discussion. All baseball fans- even Yankee fans- are welcome.

I'm gonna need a little more time to think about that. I'll get back to you soon. I just have to link you to David Ortiz being all kinds of awesome and pieing Jason Bay in the face(though if the interview with Bay on NESN went longer, it could've gone live...damn you Heidi Watney!)

And his explanation

Hmm I'm clearly biased, but I would take Youk, Pedie, and Mikey for our infield with Hanley Ramirez as the SS. If Tek had a decent BA I would definitely take him. He would probably spend a month going over everyone's stats. Though I wouldn't mind I-Rod. Outfielders: Suzuki, Holliday, and Hamilton (I love this guy) . And of course Papi as DH.

As for pitching. One word - Beckett. Big game, give him the ball. And if Beckett only managed to go 8 innings (instead of a complete game shut-out) then Mariano for the save.

I would take:

Justin Morneau at 1B
Chase Utley at 2B
Derek Jeter at SS (begrudgingly probably deserves to be on any sort of pro baseball "dream team" more than most)
Alex Rodriguez at 3B
Ryan Braun at LF
Grady Sizemore at CF
Josh Hamilton at RF

My starting pitcher catcher combo would be Josh Beckett and Brian McCann (or Joe Mauer...toss up really). There is no better big game pitcher of this current generation of pitchers.

I would have Youkilis as a reserve because of his versatility and all star talent but that is probably the only other Sox player outside of a Papelbon sighting in the bullpen that I would have on the team.

Jim - Completely forgot about Utley for 2B, very nice choice. I considered Morneau too, but my bias led me to pick Youk. Mauer is also a great choice, but I figured Tek went nicely with Beckett.

But I would not have Jeter or A-Rod. I watch a ton of Yankee games and see Jeter kill rally after rally with a GIDP. I would take the Jeter from 5 years ago, but today he's an average SS. And A-Rod looks like a good choice on paper, but he cannot hit in the clutch.

Well yes Tek and Beckett pitch well together but it would be hard to justify Teks Mendoza line average and rapidly failing ability to gun down runners at 2nd base. I love Tek but he's not what he was 3 years ago...which leads me to Jeter.

Granted he is not the SS he was a few years ago...defensively or offensively butl the really big stat stars are Dominican. I put him on there as a sort of old veteran face of baseball pick more than anything else but if Rollins was playing well it would be hard to argue against him.

Rodriguez sucks in the clutch. We all know this but his numbers are undeniable. I wouldn't mind putting Wright in there or Chipper. I still wouldn't have Mikey as my starter.

Lance Berkman BIG PUMA 1B
Chase Utley 2B
Hanley Ramirez SS
A Rod 3B
Ryan Braun OF
Josh Hamilton OF
Matt Holliday OF
Pudge Rodriguez C
and for pitching I would put in maybe either Josh Beckett or Cliff Lee. They've got pretty nasty stuff.

1B - Kevin Youkilis
2B - Chase Utley
3B - David Wright
SS - Michael Young
C - Joe Mauer
OF - Matt Holliday
OF - Ryan Ludwick
OF - Josh Hamilton
DH - David Ortiz

I`d choose Beckett as the SP, and I have to go with Rivera as the closer.

Everyone who is putting Holliday in their outfield needs to check out his home vs. away splits. Essentially he is batting 80 points better at home, his OBP jumps from a good mid 300 to a great plus 400 and his OPS jumps from about 800 to above 1.

And I think leaving Grady off any roster is a mistake. He is a yearly 30-30 threat and a quintessential leadoff man.

Forgot to say

A Holliday also has two times more homeruns at home than away.

B Hanley is Dominican born so I would assume he would play for them.

[ Jmac ] says:

Justin Morneau is Canadian

[ Texas Gal ] says:

Morneau is Canadian.
H. Ramirez is Dominican.
Rivera is Panamanian.
Suzuki is Japanese.

All of those picks are DQ'ed from consideration.

This is a fantastic question!

C - Joe Mauer. You can't deny him.
1B - Is Pujols a citizen? If so, I'd take him. If not, then Berkman.
2B - Ian Kinsler by a hair (sorry, Chase)
3B - Chipper Jones (having a much better year than both A-Rod and the very likeable David Wright)
SS - I'm not sure if Jose Reyes would be eligible, but if Hanley's not and Jose's not, better go with Jimmy Rollins.
LF - Matt Holliday, splits be damned. (Ryan Braun's home-road splits are even worse this year.)
CF - Grady Sizemore
RF - Ryan Ludwick

Backups:
C - Russell Martin, because you could also use him off the bench as a pinch runner.
OF - Jacoby Ellsbury. He gives you a great pinch running option off the bench, and you don't sacrifice much in the way of defense or hitting ability by putting him in.
IF: Youkilis. As Jim Bob said, he's very versatile--1B, 3B, even LF, and he could be a defensive replacement at first with his glove.

Closer has to be Papelbon! SP is harder, because I know Beckett is a great big-game pitcher....but at the same time, he really hasn't been very Beckett-like this year. I guess Lincecum? Does that make me a fantasy geek? Halladay or Peavy would obviously be great choices too.
